Summary:

Jiāng Chéng wasn’t even supposed to be on a night hunt. When he finds Wèi Wúxiàn and Lán Wàngjī stuck in a sinkhole at the edge of Yúnmèng and Gūsū territories, injured and without means of escape, he has no choice but to help. What seemed a simple happenstance quickly becomes dangerous, however, when the night hunt the two were on catches up with them.

Notes:

From this prompt list for the prompt "Most people just have to deal with one idiot. You both will someday be the death of me" and this prompt list for the prompt "You broke my heart, you idiot. And the first time always hurts the most." Title from "Granite" by Sleep Token because it was on the playlist while I was writing this.
This was meant to be a short one as a sprinting challenge for me to practice busting out short fics for prompts quickly but clearly brevity and I don't even have a passing acquaintance because this ended up nearly 5k. I need to learn how to shut up!
This is loosely edited and unbeta'd in a desperate attempt to fist fight my posting anxiety, so I quickly clean it up for ao3 and here is the link it back to tumblr, but this is it for now! Thanks to the CXC discord for sprinting buddies and cheerleaders for my rambles. Special thanks to @faewaren for finding the prompts lists for my search illiterate self, this one is for you!

Work Text:

Jiāng Chéng wasn’t even supposed to be on a night hunt. He’d only come to this small town on the edges between Yúnmèng and Gūsū in the first place because the headman had been worried about the out of season flooding causing damage to the banks of the waterway coming down from Gūsū’s mountains due to abnormal warmth of the summer effecting even the Lán’s chilly territory.

Jiāng Chéng had been checking the supports further up the river when he’d heard human voices off in the distance in the woods. Jiāng Chéng knew this area was prone to sinkholes, so thinking some traveller or local had possibly gotten trapped, he called out as he entered the woods. “Hello? Do you need help?”

“Jiāng Chéng!” The call came back, sure enough, from a sinkhole, if an old one going by the worn edges of the depression. Splashing below him as Jiāng Chéng leaned over the side on the most solid piece of ground he could find, Jiāng Chéng found Wèi Wúxiàn’s pale face looking up at him. “Jiāng Chéng, you found us!”

“What- Why are you in a hole, idiot? Where’s—” Jiāng Chéng cut off when he saw Lán Wàngjī, leaned carefully up against the driest part of the depression, his white robes splattered with his own blood and the side of his face covered in drying flakes coming from his hairline. “Shit, what happened?”

“I’m not sure, Jiāng Chéng, we were up river on a night hunt when we got sucked into an underground current that we didn’t know was there. It spat us out here yesterday,” Wèi Wúxiàn explained as he splashed back to Lán Wàngjī. Jiāng Chéng unsheathed Sāndú and used it to float gently down into the sinkhole and stop above the fetid water at the bottom.

Jiāng Chéng sighed and came closer to Lán Wàngjī. “Only the two of you would get caught up in something like this, honestly. Why didn’t you try and fly out or send off a signal flare?”

Wèi Wúxiàn shrugged. “The flares all got soaked and we lost Bìchén at some point while trying not to drown. Lán Zhàn’s been in and out, not really able to summon his sword when he’s been barely staying awake.”

Jiāng Chéng stepped off Sāndú to the relatively drier ground Wèi Wúxiàn had perched Lán Wàngjī on and knelt down to the injured man. He took Lán Wàngjī’s wrist, slowly feeding him qì to check on his state and hopefully replenish what he’d lost to his body trying to heal. “Nothing too serious, besides the knock to the head. Has he been waking up on his own?”

Wèi Wúxiàn nodded. “Yes, but he’s very tired and can’t stay awake for long.”

“I’m not feeling any internal bleeding, just some bruised ribs, but I’d rather send for help instead of trying to pull him out of here by myself in case he hurt his back or there’s something I’m not noticing. I’m not a doctor.” Jiāng Chéng pulled one of his own flares to signal any nearby cultivators. He was a bit distant from Lotus Pier, this far out, but the Cloud Recesses were close enough and he knew the Lán Sect had kept up use of the watchtowers in their territory just as the Jiāng Sect had, so someone would come. He set the signal flare off, Yúnmèng’s purple sparkling high above the tree-line.

“Thanks, Jiāng Chéng. I’ve been feeding him qì when I can, but this core is still too small to be of much use yet,” Wèi Wúxiàn said, flopping down on Lán Wàngjī’s other side. Jiāng Chéng looked him over, noting the washed out complexion and sweaty forehead, clear signs of qì depletion. Jiāng Chéng reached over and snatched up Wèi Wúxiàn’s wrist in his other hand, and he began feeding Wèi Wúxiàn qì as well.

“Lán Wàngjī might not have broken ribs, but you do, idiot. Sit back before you make them worse,” Jiāng Chéng groused, letting go of Lán Wàngjī to make Wèi Wúxiàn lean back against the side of the sinkhole beside Lán Wàngjī.

“Mn?” Lán Wàngjī vocalized, woken up from Jiāng Chéng bullying a complaining Wèi Wúxiàn into resting. “Wǎnyín?”

“Yeah, I’m here, Wàngjī,” Jiāng Chéng grumbled, using his free hand to gently brush Lán Wàngjī’s hair out of his eyes. Lán Wàngjī leaned his face into Jiāng Chéng’s touch, his eyes fluttering closed.

“Knew Wǎnyín would find us,” Lán Wàngjī mumbled, nosing Jiāng Chéng’s wrist.

Jiāng Chéng narrowed his eyes at Lán Wàngjī. “Oh? And how could you possibly know that! I was in the area on entirely unrelated business, not even a night hunt, checking the banks for damage to make sure the unseasonable Gūsū summer wasn’t going to kill anybody before anyone noticed the problem!”

Lán Wàngjī opened his eyes, looking at him with clearly blurry vision. “Found problem.” He gestured around them. “Wet.”

Jiāng Chéng huffed out what definitely was not a laugh and anyone who said different was a dirty liar. He leaned forward and carefully tapped his forehead to Lán Wàngjī’s before pulling back and picking up Lán Wàngjī’s wrist again. “What was the night hunt anyway?”

Wèi Wúxiàn wiggled his wrist in Jiāng Chéng’s grip, not trying to get away just reassuring they were still touching. “Water ghouls. Reports were they were crawling out of the ground north east of here in what should be an area of mountainous rock. Turns out the area is prone to underground caverns and rivers.”

Jiāng Chéng looked at him sharply. “Any sign of them before or after your little swim?”

Wèi Wúxiàn shook his head. “None.”

“That’s suspicious as hell,” Jiāng Chéng grumbled. “And most water ghouls wouldn’t bother to leave the water at all, much less digging through who knows how many feet of rock.”

“Demonic cultivator,” Lán Wàngjī croaked out.

Wèi Wúxiàn blinked at them both in surprise. “You think so?”

“That would be my theory as well,” Jiāng Chéng agreed, nodding his chin to Lán Wàngjī. The head wound really must have knocked him for a loop because Lán Wàngjī smiled at him with his mouth rather than just his eyes.

“Well,” Wèi Wúxiàn sighed and rested his head on Lán Wàngjī’s shoulder. “Fuck.”

Jiāng Chéng focused on their qì again as he had been gently and carefully sending his own through their meridians while talking. Wèi Wúxiàn wasn’t on the brink of qì depletion anymore and Jiāng Chéng could feel his nascent core working to heal his three broken ribs, so Jiāng Chéng broke their connection. Lán Wàngjī was also looking better, but his core wasn’t working like it should to heal him.

Jiāng Chéng frowned and picked up Lán Wàngjī’s other wrist to complete the circuit. Jiāng Chéng had never tried to feed qì to someone whose core had been sealed, but he could extrapolate this is what it would feel like. Lán Wàngjī’s spiritual veins weren’t blocked anywhere but his core simply wasn’t spinning at the rate it should, wasn’t sending Lán Wàngjī’s own qì through those veins to heal him. Lán Wàngjī’s only current means of the rapid healing cultivators typically enjoyed was from Jiāng Chéng’s own qì feeding into his body.

“Your core’s been sealed,” Jiāng Chéng growled. “That’s the reason he wasn’t getting better and couldn’t summon Bìchén.”

Wèi Wúxiàn carefully sat up with a grim expression on his face. “I didn’t hear any music on the night hunt, so either it’s something in the water or—”

“Or somebody has figured out how to seal a core from a distance without any sign it’s happening,” Jiāng Chéng finished, jaw clenched.

“Targeted,” Lán Wàngjī muttered.

“That’s right, Lán Zhàn! Only yours was sealed, not mine, so that means—”

“It’s a spell. Short distance, probably line of sight. You heard nothing because there was nothing to hear, no other sign like a flash of light or any sigils because there was no talisman or array used, which means whoever did this had to be right there, watching you both.” Jiāng Chéng gently set down Lán Wàngjī’s arms and stepped back onto Sāndú, rising towards the lip of the sinkhole. “Someone should have arrived by now. You’re being hunted.”

Wèi Wúxiàn sat all the way up and started to stand. “Jiāng Chéng! Where are you going?”

“I’m going to look around, do a quick perimeter and lay down some warning talismans. Whoever did this? He’s here,” Jiāng Chéng warned Wèi Wúxiàn before zipping over the side of the depression and into the woods.

Wèi Wúxiàn turned to Lán Zhàn with a pout on his bottom lip. “We’ve been abandoned, Lán Zhàn!”

Lán Zhàn grunted, and opened his eyes to peer at Wèi Wúxiàn with fondness. “Wǎnyín protecting us. Not abandoned. He will come back.”

Wèi Wúxiàn only pouted harder but settled back into Lán Zhàn’s side. Even with his core sealed, his husband was a furnace and even after all the feeding up since their marriage, Wèi Wúxiàn still chilled easily. “He will, but he could get hurt! He should have taken me with him.”

“Wèi Yīng is injured,” Lán Zhàn said disapprovingly. Well, Wèi Wúxiàn had deflected when Lán Zhàn had asked him if he was hurt when they first washed up here, so Lán Zhàn was allowed to be annoyed at him. “Wǎnyín is capable, and has much experience in cases such as this.”

Wèi Wúxiàn blinked up at his husband, feeling slightly uneasy at the reminder Jiāng Chéng had hunted demonic cultivators for over a decade. “Oh? Wǎnyín is, huh? Since when do you call him that?”

Wèi Wúxiàn was half expecting his Lán Zhàn to realize he was calling Jiāng Chéng familiarly and be embarrassed, perhaps because of the head injury. Instead Lán Zhàn simply raised an eyebrow at Wèi Wúxiàn, his ‘I know you’re smarter than that’ look, and simply told him, “Wǎnyín is Wǎnyín.”

What the fuck does that mean?! Wèi Wúxiàn screamed in his own head, but only said, “I thought you two didn’t get along? You were so angry with him when we met again on Dàfàn.”

Lán Zhàn closed his eyes again and settled back against the wall. “Mn. Anniversaries are difficult for both of us, and then… you were so afraid. Of him. And I was worried.”

“I wasn’t afraid of him! I was… I didn’t want to hurt him anymore,” Wèi Wúxiàn protested. What anniversary? Wèi Wúxiàn wasn’t sure he wanted to know. “And. I didn’t want him to hate me, be angry with me.”

“Wǎnyín is a passionate man. He often uses anger to protect his soft heart. You returning was always going to painful, to us both, because we were reminded that we failed to protect you in the first place, Wèi Yīng.”

Passionate?! And what do you know about A-Cheng’s soft anything! You hate him and he hates you! Wèi Wúxiàn huffed. “You didn’t fail anything, Lán Zhàn, my choices were my own. I pushed everyone away.”

Lán Zhàn turned his head and kissed Wèi Wúxiàn’s forehead. “I’m glad you’re not pushing me away anymore. Thank you for letting me stay with you.”

Wèi Wúxiàn bit his lip, blinking rapidly to keep the tears that wanted to spring up at bay. He could easily read what Lán Zhàn wasn’t saying, these days, like he could read Lán Zhàn’s minuscule facial expression: ‘You’re still pushing Jiāng Chéng away. You should stop. He cares for you and missed you just the same as I did.’

Wèi Wúxiàn took a deep breath for the first time in two days, his ribs barely twinging anymore with how full of Jiāng Chéng’s qì his meridians were. “Maybe, once we get out of this hole, and we’re healed up… we could visit Lotus Pier?” Wèi Wúxiàn asked, his voice small.

He could feel Lán Zhàn’s smile against his hairline. “Anything Wèi Yīng wants.”

Wèi Wúxiàn huffed. Maybe then I’ll figure out when you started calling Jiāng Chéng ‘Wǎnyín’, hmph.

There was the rustle of foliage above them, and both Wèi Wúxiàn and Lán Zhàn perked up, expecting Jiāng Chéng to appear over the lip of the sinkhole.

But it wasn’t Jiāng Chéng. A disciple in tattered robes of Mòlíng Sū was peering down at them, sword in hand. “There you two are! You won’t escape me this time.”

From the opening Lán Zhàn and Wèi Wúxiàn had tumbled through, the cries and moans of the dead spilled out, pale bloated limbs following soon after.

The demonic cultivator had found them.

Lán Zhàn curled his arm over his husband’s shoulder, and glared up at the man who dared threaten them. Even with the healing Jiāng Wǎnyín had jumpstarted in them both, they were in no real state to fight. Lán Zhàn’s sword Bìchén was still missing, and Wèi Wúxiàn had left Chénqíng behind in the Cloud Recesses, trying to prove both to the Lán Sect elders and himself he could still do the job without resorting to demonic cultivation, as he’d spent some time since their marriage and return to Lán Zhàn’s home cleansing himself in attempt to return to the sword path. Lán Zhàn regretted indulging both parties now.

Wèi Yīng tried to pull away from him to stand, but head injury or not, Lán Zhàn wasn’t going to let Wèi Yīng throw himself into the hands of some fool’s poorly controlled corpses.

“You set those water ghouls hunting, to lure us out?” Wèi Yīng questioned in a flippant tone. “Poor use of water ghouls, poor things barely have hands left after you made them dig through solid rock.”

The demonic cultivator sneered down at them. “Worked, didn’t it? They still have teeth to tear you apart with. Now where’s the other one, I saw the signal go off. Unfortunately for you I was able to send those Lán fools back to their little tower, so there’s no rescue coming for you!”

Lán Zhàn blinked, having caught a flash of silver behind this fool. He resisted the urge to bare his teeth in a grin, such expressions weren’t gentlemanly. He left such displays to Wǎnyín, who had undoubtedly found them again already.

“My shīdì will come for me,” Wèi Wúxiàn sneered.

The demonic cultivator laughed. “What shīdì, idiot, you abandoned your sect to chase after Hánguāng-jūn like a bitch in heat!”

“I’m his shīdì, any last words?” Wǎnyín called, his spiritual whip striking the demonic cultivator and wrapping around his neck.

Jiāng Chéng was furious. Idiot idiot idiot, shouldn’t have left them alone! He admonished himself and he raced back through the trees towards the swell of resentful energy, coming dead ahead in the direction of the sinkhole Lán Wàngjī and Wèi Wúxiàn were trapped in.

Jiāng Chéng crept as quietly through the brush as he could, eventually giving it up as a bad job and climbing back onto Sāndú to speed back towards the two men he’d been trying to protect. He could feel the resentment pooling, but that didn’t mean there weren’t other enemies with him in the trees, and he couldn’t afford to be stopped before he got back to the sinkhole. Jiāng Chéng could smell the vegetive and bloated meat rot of water ghouls from here, but there wasn’t enough water in the sinkhole itself for them to move at their normally frightening speeds. The real threat was the demonic cultivator and his skill at the spell that could seal a core without any kind of indicator. Jiāng Chéng couldn’t afford to get his core sealed or all three of them would be in trouble, and while Jiāng Chéng hadn’t found evidence of more than one demonic cultivator in the area that didn’t mean the assailant was alone or that Jiāng Chéng hadn’t missed something.

Through the break in the trees, the demonic cultivator stood at the lip of the depression, dressed in a worn Mòlíng Sū sect uniform and Jiāng Chéng’s belly burned in rage. He knew he should have dismantled them personally rather than leave it to others to investigate for demonic cultivation. Who else but Jiāng Chéng and his own disciples had the expertise to identify and clear suspected demonic cultivation, besides Lán Wàngjī. Lán Wàngjī was the only other person experienced and trustworthy enough to take care of such things, but he’d been traveling out of reach with Wèi Wúxiàn at the time and Jiāng Chéng hadn’t been in the headspace to insist on being involved in the investigation himself. Well, now they were paying for it.

“I’m his shīdì, any last words?” Jiāng Chéng barked, the crack of Zǐdiàn's lightning wrapping around the man threatening his— threatening Wèi Wúxiàn and Lán Wàngjī. Zǐdiàn's coils tightened around the demonic cultivator and flashed, the spiritual tool’s lightening shattering through the resentment settled in the man’s meridians, dispersing it abruptly and causing him to cry out.

Jiāng Chéng yanked on the scaled grip, pulling the demonic cultivator off his feet and dragging him away from the sinkhole and semblance of control he had over the shuffling bodies still squirming out of the opening underground. Zǐdiàn snapped, frying the assailant until he stopped moving, unconscious for now. Jiāng Chéng twisted his off hand into a sword seal to send Sāndú zipping into the sinkhole and skewering the water ghouls that were still crawling towards Lán Wàngjī and Wèi Wúxiàn.

“Jiāng Chéng!” Wèi Wúxiàn called, squirming out of Lán Wàngjī’s hold on him and stumbling to his feet. “Are you okay?”

“Worry about yourself, idiot!” Jiāng Chéng shouted. He raised Zǐdiàn and whipped it down towards the water pooled at the bottom of the sinkhole. He didn’t have his full qì reserves, but he had enough for this so Jiāng Chéng took a deep breath and electrocuted the water, zapping the water ghouls and using their own resentful pathways to direct the lightning from body to body until Zǐdiàn's arcing energy crashed into the corpses clogging up the entrance to the underground river, the cascading lightning bursting the water ghouls apart and collapsing the rock down, sealing them away.

Jiāng Chéng pulled the whip back to its ring form, black spots dancing over his vision as he slowly sunk to his knees. He felt more than heard Sāndú clatter back onto the rock Lán Wàngjī and Wèi Wúxiàn had been resting on, the driest area in the sinkhole before Zǐdiàn's energy had forcefully evaporated the water just as effectively as it had the resentment.

“Jiāng Chéng!” “Wǎnyín?” The two men called from the pit. Jiāng Chéng waved them off as he searched his belt pouches for another signal flare. It burst into the air above the canopy, the sparkles almost iridescent to Jiāng Chéng’s tired eyes. Jiāng Chéng only had a moment to feel relieved before his vision swam again, and he collapsed, Wèi Wúxiàn’s voice calling out as if from underwater, “Jiāng Chéng!”

When Jiāng Chéng came to, it was to birdsong and hushed whispers, the smell of clean fabric and sharp medicine informing him he was in the infirmary. He blinked awake, vision much clearer, and looked around. Sure enough he was in the infirmary, but the one at the Cloud Recesses, not Lotus Pier. The whispering had been coming from Wèi Wúxiàn, in his own infirmary bed beside Jiāng Chéng’s, or perhaps Lán Wàngjī’s own, considering they were cuddled up together on one rather than separately.

Jiāng Chéng grunted, his mouth dry, and he looked around for water. Lán Wàngjī was faster however and had slipped off the bed with Wèi Wúxiàn and coming over to cup the back of Jiāng Chéng’s head to lift him up enough to sip at the cup he held in his other hand. “Wǎnyín, you’re awake. Good. Wèi Yīng was worried.”

“Lán Zhàn was also worried,” came the grumble from the other bed, Wèi Wúxiàn squirming like he was going to get up as well. Lán Wàngjī gave him a sharp look and he settled. “You worried both of us, passing out like that! You used to much qì!”

Jiāng Chéng sat up, against the headboard to glare over at Wèi Wúxiàn. “Says you! Don’t tell me you damaged your ribs all over again!”

Wèi Wúxiàn pouted and Jiāng Chéng knew he was right. “I’m fine! You’re the one that passed out face first!”

Jiāng Chéng turned to Lán Wàngjī who sat on Jiāng Chéng’s own bed and picked up his wrist to check his qì. “Wǎnyín fell to his side, not his face, but we did worry. Wèi Yīng used Sāndú to pull us both out of the sinkhole, and hurt himself.”

Jiāng Chéng glared at Wèi Wúxiàn more fiercely. “Idiot, disciples were on the way, you should have waited.”

“I thought you’d gone and died on me!” Wèi Wúxiàn pouted. “You were so still.”

Lán Wàngjī gently squeezed Jiāng Chéng’s wrist, drawing attention back to him. “Wǎnyín’s technique took a lot out of him, after expending much energy healing us. Wǎnyín should take care.”

Jiāng Chéng resisted the urge to squirm under both men’s concern, scrunching his nose. “You take care! Most people just have to deal with one idiot, the two of you will someday be the death of me, but not yet!” Jiāng Chéng ignored Lán Wàngjī looking soulfully into his eyes to turn and snap at Wèi Wúxiàn. “And you! What are you doing night hunting without a weapon! Don’t think I noticed you didn’t have Chénqíng. What, have you abandoned yet another spiritual tool? You could have been killed because you were a sitting duck!”

“Well, I’m trying to return to the sword path,” Wèi Wúxiàn told him calmly. “But it’s not like I have a sword to use, so—”

“What do you mean ‘I don’t have a sword!’ Suíbiàn is waiting for you anytime you deign to remember it, hah!” Jiāng Chéng barked, face red. “And what’s wrong with Chénqíng? Some complaint on its upkeep? Well, keep it to yourself, you weren’t there to clean it, I did my best. I’m not a musician, besides, hmph—”

Lán Wàngjī hand placed his freehand over Jiāng Chéng’s mouth. “If Wǎnyín is asking questions, he should wait for answers,” he explained calmly before removing his hand to brush Jiāng Chéng’s loose hair behind his ear. Jiāng Chéng’s face burned as he stared at Lán Wàngjī in shock.

Wèi Wúxiàn cleared his throat and Jiāng Chéng saw his cheeks were flushed as well when Wèi Wúxiàn answered him. “Chénqíng is in excellent condition, no worries, Jiāng Chéng! I just… If Jiāng-zōngzhǔ would permit this one to visit Lotus Pier and retrieve Suíbiàn? I would be grateful.”

“No.” Jiāng Chéng spat. Both Lán Wàngjī and Wèi Wúxiàn flinched. “No, if you come to Lotus Pier, it better not be to pick up your sword again just to run away. You come to Lotus Pier and I’m putting you through your paces, Wèi Wúxiàn. It’s clear to me by the size and state of your core you’re too out of practice. Who knows what foolish half remembered sword forms you’ll subject poor Suíbiàn to otherwise.”

Wèi Wúxiàn’s face lit up like the sun emerging from behind the clouds and Jiāng Chéng had to look away, only for his vision to catch on Lán Wàngjī’s soft, molten eyes and fond expression. “Wàngjī can come too. His rooms are still there.”

Wèi Wúxiàn squeaked in surprise when Lán Wàngjī swooped into Jiāng Chéng’s space and kissed his forehead. “Mn. Will come home with Wèi Yīng.”

Jiāng Chéng wished he could crawl under the bed and hide, and his shoulders were scrunched up around his ears. He was blushing from the top of his head to his chest. “Don’t make a big deal about it. I’ll have Wèi Wúxiàn’s old rooms aired, but I doubt you’ll use both spaces.”

Wèi Wúxiàn surged up off his infirmary bed and practically threw himself into Jiāng Chéng’s lap in excitement. “Jiāng Chéng!”

“Watch your ribs!”

“You kept my rooms?!”

“You idiot you’re injured!”

Wèi Wúxiàn wrapped his arms around Jiāng Chéng’s middle and buried his face into Jiāng Chéng’s chest, Lán Wàngjī lying backwards across Jiāng Chéng’s legs where Wèi Wúxiàn had knocked them both onto him. “Jiāng Chéng, Jiāng Chéng, you really kept my rooms and my things? You missed me? Even though I told you to cut ties to save the sect?”

Jiāng Chéng ran his hand over Wèi Wúxiàn’s hair. “You’re still in the rosters, too.”

“Jiāng Chéng!”

“I couldn’t— I could play pretend that you left, but I couldn’t stand striking you out. I’m an idiot too, I guess.”

“No,” Lán Wàngjī disagreed, sliding up the bed to wrap arms around Wèi Wúxiàn and Jiāng Chéng both. “Wǎnyín is loving and good.”

Wèi Wúxiàn nodded against Jiāng Chéng’s sternum. “I never wanted to leave and I missed you the moment I did. I just didn’t want to hurt you anymore…”

Jiāng Chéng huffed a laugh that sounded closer to a gasp. “You broke my heart, you idiot. And the first time is always the hardest. I got used to it after a while.”

Wèi Wúxiàn looked up at him, teary eyed. “Then why? Why let me back to just—”

Jiāng Chéng smiled ruefully down at him. “What other choice do I have? My heart has always been yours, A-Xian. It goes with you whenever you leave.”

Wèi Wúxiàn stared at him blankly for a moment before pulling himself up Jiāng Chéng’s front with his hands grasping Jiāng Chéng’s shoulders, and kissed him. Wèi Wúxiàn’s warm, wet mouth pressing desperately against Jiāng Chéng’s lips that couldn’t help but fall open and let Wèi Wúxiàn take whatever he wanted.

The kiss felt long and too short before Wèi Wúxiàn pulled back with a red face and they both turned to Lán Wàngjī. Lán Wàngjī’s gaze burned with heat, and his ears were bright red, but he only smiled down at them before giving first Jiāng Chéng, then Wèi Wúxiàn, brief pecks on their lips. Lán Wàngjī climbed out of the infirmary bed, stating “Informing the healer you’re awake. Then I will pack our things for a trip to Yúnmèng.”

“Lán Zhàn!” Wèi Wúxiàn was grinning ear to ear, though Jiāng Chéng was sure his own expression wasn’t far off.

Jiāng Chéng watched Lán Wàngjī leave the infirmary with a bloom of hope in his chest, and Jiāng Chéng could only pull Wèi Wúxiàn closer to wait. They wouldn’t have to wait long and then…

Then Jiāng Chéng would get to go home, with Lán Wàngjī and Wèi Wúxiàn following.

They would all get to go home.
