Above this small world

Summary:

You've been stuck in the deep dark depths since you were a guppy, you've heard vaguely that there's more above than it seems, and, well, despite being a solitary creature, you've always wanted to meet another like you, a Siren, perhaps there's more above this small world?

Chapter 1: To the Surface!

Summary:

You have had enough of your dark and little world, everyday it was the same, scavenge, eat, sleep, repeat. You wanted something new

But what happens when you decide to venture out to the surface? Would you really thrive? Well, you were going to find out.

Chapter Text

Darkness. That's all there was down here, asides from the occasional, distant glow, there was not much to be found. And that was okay for your kind, you were predators here, and some of the best, but it couldn't help but feel dull at times.

You were a Siren, you lived your life hunting other Mer and deep sea creatures. You were completely alone, and that was normal, it was fine.

But it also wasn't, whereas most Abyssals would act like mindless sharks or a pod of piranhas, you thought for yourself when others refused to. So you'd often try to talk to other Mers down here, which was only met with hostility and fear. You were their predator after all, and there was not much luck to be found.

Which is why you found yourself here now, finishing up the meal you found. A dead Abyssal Mer. It's throat torn to shreds from something else and insides hollowed out, save for the guts leaking and staining the water with a deep crimson. A truly gruesome view for other mer, but for sirens such as yourself it was normal and expected.

Fully fed and ready to go, you decided not long ago you'd make your way towards the surface; see what's really out there. You raised your long tail and flared out your fins, before making the first move towards the surface.

---

The journey was tiring, and the new stimulation felt so... weird. For one, the amount of oxygen was almost suffocating, and the warmth, while pleasant was extremely new. But most jarring was the lack of pressure, something that made you slow down to adjust.

By the time you were in shallower waters, well, shallow compared to what you inhabited, you were starving once again, despite the hearty meal, it was nothing new to you, and it was expected, the trip to the surface took a lot out of you, but you refused to hunt for food here, it was barren, save for a few small yet flighty fish.

So you kept swimming, and as you kept doing so, you realized how much brighter it had become, it hurt your eyes, especially since you were so close to the surface, and the naturally bright color of the sand made for a rather jarring sight, but you kept your eyes open after letting them adjust, all that was left was to breach the surface, and you had found a large boulder doing so.

You hoisted yourself onto it, being mindful of your scales that might get caught onto any sharp edges, and you were out of the water for the first time.

The birds flew overhead, their calls foreign to you, but like a song, the waters and their music was playing to the melody of the softly blowing wind, each of these elements brought a sense of peace and harmony you hadn't known before.

You never felt so.. free, it was amazing, and the view of the coral reef ahead in all its vibrant colors, colors that abyssal's could only dream of, it was like your world had finally grown larger to accommodate your need for something new.

And then you looked back at yourself, an oddity of an abyssal, your scales and skin were not black or dark, cold colors, but instead a light pale cream, akin to the sand but yet much brighter, you felt like you belonged here, instead of being an eyesore back to the place you had decidedly once called home, the markings on your scales and tail had fit the bright vibrant colors of the reef, although more pastel.

You left out a sigh, not melancholy in nature, but relieved, for here you could thrive; learn, explore! And you'd do so gladly.

But right now? You needed to catch a meal, you weren't sure how long exactly the trip took, as time was a foreign concept to abyssal's who slept and ate on a whim, you wondered if any mer were around, they'd make for a potential feast indeed...
