Link has come to his moment of truth, even though he never thought that he would have made it this far. All he wanted was to be a train engineer for the New Hyrule Railroad Company, and when he finally got his dream job, he ended up on a dastardly adventure to rescue the princess from a demon lord named Malladus and his servant Cole, who was a chancellor for the princess.
Link's eyes are set on Princess Zelda's body which is possessed by the evil demon himself. The real Zelda, who ended up a spirit, accompanied Link on his adventure as either a spirit or a Phantom Knight, A suit of Armor that protects the Spirit Tower. Zelda's Phantom Knight is holding on to the possessed body while Link readies his aim on them. He is about to use a bow to shoot an arrow of light.
"Shoot, Link!" Zelda pleaded. "It's the only way to knock Malladus out of my body!"
"NO!" Cole shouted as he tried to attack Link. "You will not harm my lord!"
Link swats Cole out of the way with his bow and aims at the possessed body. After a moment of careful aiming, Link released the arrow of light and it struck the possessed body in the heart. The princess' body screamed in a demonic voice. The body and Zelda's Phantom Armor landed onto the demon train and they continue to struggle against each other as they are surrounded by an enormous glowing light.
Link watches the struggle in both awe and fear. He worries for Zelda's well-being. Cole, after recovering from Link's attack, also watches the struggle.
"Your Majesty!!" the deceptive chancellor screamed. He wanted to go help his king, but seeing that the light is getting bigger and looking to explode, he floats away wailing.
Zelda, in her Phantom Armor, continues to hold onto her body, which is still posessed by Malladus. She is desperate to keep him from escaping from her grasp. "You will not escape, Malladus!" She declared. "RELEASE ME!" She continued to struggle with Malladus and then she noticed Link watching her. "Link, be careful!" She demanded. "Don't worry about me, just get away from Malladus! RUN!!"
Link paused for a moment, staring at the two struggling individuals. He knows that the light is about to explode and he also knows that it will have some effect on him when it touches him. Despite that, however, his fear for Zelda's well-being is still in front of his own and he held on his own.
"NO!" The Hero of Tracks shouted. "I'm NOT leaving you here!" In one swift move, he suddenly ran toward the Evil Zelda and Zelda's Phantom Armor, much to Zelda's shock and horror.
"NO!!! LIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNK!!!"
The light exploded and the Demon Train took effect of the explosion and it derailed from one of the four tracks inside the dark spirit world. It eventually transported out of the spirit world and it crashed into a grassy plain area that is not far from New Hyrule.
Moments after the crash, Link was lying down into the ground unconscious. His vision is black as gunpowder. He couldn't dream of Zelda's beautiful face, whether she was a spirit or in her real body. When he first met her, he was smitten with her and her beauty. He was happy when Zelda asked him to help her with her predicament. Throughout his adventure he bonded with her, and he fell in love with her spirit more than her beauty. He remembered her asking him what he wanted to do when this was all over, and he was unsure of what he wanted.
"Link..." Link can hear Zelda's voice, even though his vision was still black as coaldust. "Link! Link!!! Please open your eyes, Link!!!"
Link was finally able to regain consciousness. He reeled in pain for a moment, and he recovered when he spotted Zelda, in her spirit form, floating near him with a worried look on her face.
"Oh, Link! Thank goodness!" Zelda squealed in relief. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah," Link groaned in reply, and he tried to move but a sharp pain stopped him. "AHH!" He winced and he laid back down on the floor.
"Oh, no!" Zelda cried and she tried to help him but her hands went right through him. She closed her eyes in frustration. Curse this form, she thought. If only I had my body!
Link can hear her sobbing. He feels extremely guilty for making her worry.
"Why, Link?" Zelda cried. "Why didn't you try to get away?! Why?!"
Link paused for a moment, unsure of what to say. He probably may die either way, so he decided to tell her straight out.
"Because I love you, Zelda."
Zelda gasped in shock when she heard his confession. "You... You love me?"
"Yes," Link replied weakly. "Since I first laid eyes on you. I guess you can say that it's 'love at first sight', huh?" He chuckled and then he winced in pain.
"Oh, no! Link!" Zelda cried and she cuddled up to her friend, despite being in spirit form.
"RAWWWWR!"
Zelda heard Malladus roaring as if he is in pain and she looked up to see that her body, still possessed by Malladus, has finally rejected Malladus' spirit thanks to the power of the Light Arrow.
"Oh, Goddesses!" Zelda cried. "This is my chance!" She quickly turned to Link. "I'll be right back, Link! Hang in there!"
And with that Zelda's spirit zoomed toward her body, shoving Cole out of the way when he came to. She was almost there. She was going to make it back to her body.
ZING!
Zelda's spirit went right through her body, all of a sudden. It did not work.
"What?!" Zelda gasped. She doesn't understand so she desperately tried again and again and again. She's getting more frantic every failed attempt. "COME ON!!! WHY CAN'T I GET BACK IN?!?!"
Link opened his eyes, and he spotted Zelda trying to get back into her body. He is more worried now that she is failing to do so. He tried to get up, but once again, pain prevented him from doing so.
"Stop!" Cole demanded. "That vessel belongs to His Majesty!" He turned to his master's spirit form. "Quickly, Your Majesty! You must hurry back to Zelda's body!"
Malladus, hearing Cole's whining, glared at Zelda's attempts to reclaim her body and started to zoom towards her.
Zelda stopped trying to get back into her body and looked at it in utter disbelief. "Why? Why isn't this working?" She panted. She, then, gasped as she noticed Malladus floating towards her. She screamed and looked away.
Suddenly, something stopped Malladus from touching Zelda's body, a puce light force of some sort. Zelda, in her spirit form, opened her eyes and she looked at the light force and she gasped as she realized where it came from.
Byrne, Anjean's apprentice, who once turned evil and sided with Malladus for power. He is stopping Malladus from reclaiming Zelda's body. He is standing next to Link while he is still lying on the ground.
"You cannot give up now!" Byrne demanded. "Your body has the sacred power of the spirits! Now concentrate on reclaiming it!" He winced from the pain he received earlier, and he recovered. "After all... didn't you say you wanted to have words with me?"
Zelda stared at Byrne for a moment. She is happy and relieved to see him and then she realized that he's right. She needs to try to reclaim her body with a different approach.
"If there really is a sacred power in my body..." The princess began. "Please let it hear me!" She crossed her hands together and began to pray, a magical aura surrounded her spirit. "Tetra, please give me your blessing!"
And with that, Zelda's spirit floated toward her body, which also began to glow with the same magical aura. The spirit and the body finally joined as one. Her approach finally worked, and she has now successfully returned to her body.
Zelda's body opened her eyes for a moment, but then she closed them once she realized that she is now starting to fall. She began to scream bloody murder.
Byrne and Link watch in horror as Zelda began to plunge to the ground. "GO, KID, NOW! RIGHT NOW!" Byrne loudly demanded.
Link gasped and he finally recovered enough strength to get up and rush toward where Zelda will land. "Hang on, Zelda! I'm coming!"
When Link got to where Zelda is going to land, he outstretched his arms hoping to catch her. Only, surprise... Zelda didn't land in Link's arms, she landed on top his head. Her head collided with Link's head with a loud 'CLUNK!' and the two slumped down into the ground.
The engineer and the princess lay down on the ground unconscious for only a few seconds. After that, Zelda moved her hand to rub her head where she clunked with Link's own.
"Oh, owww!" Zelda groaned in pain. She suddenly gasped. "Wait!" She sat herself up to check herself out. She's looking at her hands and she clapped them. "Am I... Am I back?!"
"Obviously," Link groaned as he opened his eyes. "You really have a hard head, Zelda." He attempted to sit up, only to be embraced by Zelda's body.
"LIIINK!!!" Zelda cried as she hugged him. "Oh, Link, I'm back! Thank you, Link! Thank you!" She separated herself from him and looked at him in the eyes with her own. "I love you, Link! So much!"
Link was blushing the whole time from when the princess wrapped herself around him. He looked at her with wide eyes. He is stunned as he learned that the princess actually loved him back. He finally smiled at her.
"I love you, too, Zelda!"
Zelda sighed lovingly as she hugged him again and she kissed him all over his face, leaving red lip marks all over. Their loving moment was ended abruptly, however, by a loud screaming.
Link and Zelda gasped as they spotted Byrne being attacked by Malladus and Cole. "Uh-oh!" Link yelped.
