Work Text:
“You’re falling asleep.”
Lawrence groaned softly, fingers twitching as he blinked and squinted at Adam. “Am not.”
Adam snorted, and then took a sip of champagne- some fancy shit he couldn’t pronounce, but it tasted fine. He was sure that Lawrence would have more to say on the matter, something about notes or whatever. He had tried to drag Adam to wine tastings with his snobby friends before, but it really hadn't been Adam's scene- if it was getting Adam tipsy, he was a huge fan of it.
“You’re such an old man, love.”
Lawrence yawned, and then leaned over slightly to press a kiss to the closest part of Adam he could reach, his shoulder. “I’m fine, I’m fine.”
“You’re going to miss the countdown, and then I won’t get my New Year's kiss.”
He feigned a pout, and then laughed when Lawrence pushed himself up to a sitting position. He looked exhausted, wrapped up in a dressing gown to cover his t-shirt and shorts- unseasonably skimpy for the winter, Adam had made sure to whistle every time he had walked past all evening just to see his face go red. Adam reached out with the hand he wasn’t holding his glass with, and fixed the neck of the gown to lie flat against his chest, resting his hand there for a moment. He could feel Lawrence’s heart, steady and even, and he almost laughed as he saw his husband’s eyes start to slip closed again. He would be out in a matter of seconds.
He took his hand away again, bringing a leg up to rest his chin on it as he watched Lawrence’s head tilt forward, his hair flopping onto his forehead a little. He wasn’t sure whether it was the alcohol or the sight of him, but Adam felt ridiculously warm and happy, almost giddy from it, his body relaxed as he heard the soft sounds of celebration from the TV- if someone had told Adam a decade ago that he would be at home, curled up on the couch on New Year’s Eve instead of out getting drunk in a nightclub somewhere he would have laughed at them, but here he was, the love of his life slowly falling asleep beside him as he drank expensive champagne out of a real glass. In an actual house, too. That he owned. Younger Adam would never have believed him. He had always been kind of a bitch anyway, though.
He finished his glass and set it down on the coffee table with a soft clink, picking up his phone instead. There were a few new messages since the last time he had checked it- well wishes from Alison, Amanda, one of the women from the yoga class he took at the rec centre for his mobility. Even one from some of Lawrence's work friend's and their wives- Adam had been a hit at parties, it seemed. Lawrence had been incredibly smug about that. He responded to them all, and then locked his phone again, watching as the people on the screen started their one minute countdown. He picked up Lawrence’s glass, knocking back the dregs of it- it would just go flat otherwise, and Lawrence would feel bad about wasting it. He let the taste of it wash over his tongue, putting it back down and then sitting back to watch the screen again, sliding his arm up over the back of the couch behind Lawrence’s head, letting his wrist hang down as he leaned gently into the man’s side.
He could remember those nights out, back when he was younger- eagerly searching out for someone to kiss, someone to ring in the year with. Coming home drunk and often with company, starting out the year hungover and just as miserable as he had been before. Rinsing and repeating the same routine expecting something to change, expecting a miracle to fall into his lap. Hoping for something different. He glanced at Lawrence, eyes tracing along the bridge of his nose, the curve of his lip. Whatever he had wanted back then- he had it now. He heard the last couple of seconds of the countdown, the last few moments of the year, and smiled to himself.
“Happy New Year, Lawrence.”
He pressed a kiss to the man’s temple, gentle and lingering. He could smell the man’s cologne, mixing with shampoo. It was one of his favourite scents, fresh and pleasant and Lawrence, and he closed his eyes for a moment- definitely a better way to celebrate than what he had been doing before.
It was a couple of minutes after he had pulled away again to sit back that Lawrence stirred, and Adam watched his expression tighten slightly as he realised that he had, in fact, fallen asleep. Adam let his arm fall down onto the man's shoulders properly now, arm settling against the soft fabric.
“You could have woken me.” Lawrence grumbled. He yawned again, stifling it slightly with the back of his hand.
Adam chuckled. “You looked very cozy, I didn’t want to disturb you.”
“Still, you didn’t get your kiss.”
Adam shifted his weight to lean forward, kissing the man- just a quick press of lips. Lawrence chased him as he pulled away, though, and he let him pull him back forward into another one, bringing a hand up to cup his cheek as he did. He smiled into it, fingers brushing against the hair curling around his ear.
Once Lawrence let him go again, he sat back and squeezed his arm gently. “There’s always next year, anyway.”
He watched Lawrence’s soft smile, rolling his eyes as he lifted Adam’s hand to his mouth and pressed a kiss to his knuckles.
“Lots of them, I hope.”
Adam let Lawrence pull him onto his lap, and laughed as he banged his elbow on the arm of the sofa as he tried to find a position that was comfortable. He sat up so that Lawrence could wrap his arm around his waist easier, before resting his head on his shoulder, pressing a little kiss to the side of his neck as he settled in.
He hoped so too.
