Work Text:
“I could fight!” Jaemin exclaims in front of his two brothers and twin knights. It’s unfair that he is the only prince who cannot fight battles and had to stay at home worrying and anxious. “What’s the point of me training if I cannot go to battles?”
“Jaemin, it’s not as easy as training.” Prince Jaehyun remarks sternly. He looks at the map of their kingdom and the mountain where the enemy had camped. “This is too big of a responsibility for someone who has no battle experience as you. Do you even know the topography of this area?”
Jaemin remains quiet. He doesn’t. And his eldest brother struck a nerve. Among the siblings, Prince Jaehyun is the one who is more experienced in the topography and lands. He knows the highs and lows of their overall kingdom as if it was tattooed in his memories.
“Even so,” Jaemin voices out in desperation. “I can remain in the flat ground—“
“As much as I encourage you to train, I have to side with our eldest brother this time, Jaemin.” Prince Mark interrupts. He is the one who oversees Jaemin’s training especially in archery. Mark, however, is a master strategist. He knows his way about learning the enemies’ movements and battle positions.
Jaemin knows he could not argue when Mark sides with Jaehyun. Two of his brothers are highly skilled while Jaemin is still a novice. It pains him that nobody trusts his fighting skills without even seeing him on the real battlefield.
Jaemin walks out of the meeting hall dejectedly followed by his two knights, both named Jeno.
People might think it was a ridiculous choice to name both children the same. However, somehow, it made sense. Before they were born, nobody knew there were two boys in the womb until the twins came out between night and day. Their parents wanted the name to be ‘Jeno’ thinking there was only one child. Since their father, a royal knight, wanted both children to take his steps, they will eventually be called by their surnames. Thus, he did not bother to change their first names.
And he was right. By the age of twenty three, the twins are now titled as “Ser Lee”
The older twin had ebony black hair similar to the Lee senior, befitting as he was born late at night while the younger twin had blonde hair like their mother and was born as early as the sun rose.
Night and Day. Jaemin thinks as passes by the palace courtyard, looking at the numerous bonsais at the centre of the garden.
Jaemin feels like a bonsai tree— nurtured but is being held on by strings. He only remains to feel small, a decoration to make the palace look pretty.
“What do you two think?” Jaemin asks his knights without averting his gaze on the small bonsais. Am I similar to that tree? “Do you not trust me in the battlefield?”
The older Jeno does not say a thing. However, the younger Jeno walks next to Jaemin with a smile on his face. “Cheer up, my prince. You are very good with fighting. Your brothers are just very protective of you. Hopefully, they could change their minds before we go to war.”
Jaemin smiles at the person next to him. The younger Jeno always tries to cheer Jaemin up, trying to make him smile when Jaemin feels sad. Those were the words Jaemin wanted to hear at this moment.
Perhaps, younger Jeno is right. Maybe his brothers will change their minds and see Jaemin’s potential.
“Thank you, Jeno.” Jaemin smiles warmly.
Jeno puts a hand on Jaemin’s cheek. “There’s the lovely smile.”
Jaemin feels warm. Yes, he needs to hear these words. Jeno never fails to make him smile. In a way, younger Jeno is his comfort person that gives him warmness when is heart is in an emotional tangle.
Two days have passed and still no avail. Jaemin is still refused by his brothers and the war is almost coming. Prince Jaehyun and Prince Mark are set with their decisions. Being supported by the King and Queen, Jaemin could do nothing but walk alone and frustrated as his knights continue to train day and night for the war Jaemin is not even participating.
He is utterly disappointed that everyone does not believe in him with the exception of the younger Lee— who seems to always agree with his decisions. Jaemin would keep it in his heart what the younger Jeno would always say,
'You never know until you’ve tried. Failure leads to learning. It’s the hard way but it is an effective way! Life is not all about perfection.'
As he reflects on Jeno’s words, a tap on his shoulder surprises Jaemin. “Jeno!”
“Hello, my prince” Younger twin Jeno’s beaming smile brightens Jaemin’s mood. He had always thought of the younger brother as the sun— bright as a day and full of positive feelings. His blonde hair is drenched with sweat, seemly taking a walk after hours of relentless training. “How was your day?”
Jaemin shakes his head, remembering his disappointment. “I still cannot get their approval. How will I be able to get used to the war if all they want is for me to stay at the palace like a good obedient prince?”
Jeno sighs but he retains his smile. He holds the prince’s hand in an assuring manner and Jaemin’s heart begins to beat.
“Sometimes, pushing it is also not good.” Jeno tells Jaemin in a gentle manner. The young prince is already torn for days, how much more if he tells him firmly? Jaemin is too precious for Jeno to break his fragile heart. His older brother and father might’ve warned him about spoiling the prince but Jeno is firm that Jaemin is more precious than a gem. Jaemin easily cries and Jeno would not want to make the same mistake his younger, naughtier, self did in the past.
“Remember, your brothers are very skilled and experienced, they would not want to risk anything especially you.” Jeno says, firmly holding Jaemin’s soft hands “There are only three siblings and two will be on the front lines.”
It is true. Jaemin tells himself. Of all the people, he should not doubt his brothers. This is a big war that would be written in history as one of the greatest. Jaemin knows that he, a mere trainee in terms of military ranks, would not even be allowed near the front lines.
“Smile, my prince.” Jeno cups Jaemin’s face. “Even I would be too worried to fight if I knew a strand of your hair would be in danger.”
“Jeno” Jaemin holds Jeno’s wrists, looking into the young knight’s honest eyes. “Before you go…”
I love you.
Jaemin swallows a lump in his throat. He is sure about the feelings he's harboured for the younger Jeno. There is no time to doubt. “I— I want you to know that my heart is always with you.”
Jeno stands still, listening to Jaemin’s confession.
Jaemin continues, “I don’t know how this war will end. But I want you to hear my feelings before you go. My heart belongs to you.”
“My prince…”
“It does not matter if you do not feel the same.” Jaemin smiles with an ache in his voice. “I only want you to know that there is someone in here waiting for your return.”
Jeno leans into Jaemin to kiss the crown of the prince’s head. “Worry not about my feelings.”
Jaemin closes his eyes in relief. Not until Jeno says more.
“However,” Jeno adds. “Will you wait until the war is over? Then I will tell you what I truly feel.”
Jaemin was not able to sleep the night his brothers and beloved knights departed. He could only stare at the lonely moon reflecting his own feelings. Tonight, there is a lone starless moon. Jaemin did not even notice his tears falling down as he desperately prays for the safety of his loved ones and those who will fight for his kingdom.
And that’s when Jaemin remembers that part of his heart is missing the older Jeno too. The Jeno that would meet Jaemin at the loneliest and saddest nights; the Jeno that would wipe the tears that Jaemin hides from everyone’s eyes.
Jaemin spends his night fully awake until dawn welcomes him. He takes a step out of his room and thinks of ways he could do to help the war while being grounded inside the palace walls. So he heads to the archives, surprising the scribes, to check the rations.
Jaemin’s brows contort in a confusing manner as he notices discrepancies among the recorded accounts. And thus he heads to the accounting where the records once again reveal the army had been given is less than they should receive.
“I need a word with the treasury, accountants, and palace scribes.” Jaemin announces, placing more confusion inside the palace walls. “And send a letter to the minister of finance at this moment.”
Jaemin finds out the kingdom is given allowance by how much soldiers there are. The head of the treasury is replaced yearly to keep the palace finances safe. However, the treasury failed to account the increase of palace soldiers each year— resulting in the rations remaining the same amount.
Once the meeting has ended with the money finally divided equally, Jaemin becomes in charge of the expenses. He increases the food sources, looking through ample amount of protein and vitamins to keep the soldiers’ health.
Jaemin visits with his old friend, Taeyong, whose father was a former cook and farmer, to help with the food distribution. He then checks the blacksmith owner Kun and woodworking owner Jungwoo that could manufacture weaponries while paying with the excess finances from the palace.
“Your highness, we’ve sent the letters to our allied kingdom.” A palace messenger tells Jaemin. “You will hear from them shortly.”
The next thing Jaemin does is going to the neighbouring kingdom. He takes his horse and two protégée guards, Renjun and Haechan, trained by Jaemin’s knights, to travel to the East. Jaemin will head to the Park clan where his distant relatives reside. Jaemin, along with Renjun and Haechan, arrive at the towering stone gates of the Iron Kingdom where they are welcomed with hospitality. He descends from his horse and walks towards the multiple stone steps with head held up high.
When he reaches the top, Jaemin is welcomed by the Royal Prince Jisung— his first cousin. Jaemin bows down to pay respects, followed by Renjun and Haechan, and Jisung returns the gesture.
“Hyung, it’s a pleasure to see you here.” Jisung greets, inviting Jaemin and his guards inside the main hall.
“Have you received my letter?” Jaemin asks as they take a seat on the table.
“Yes” Jisung agrees. “I have prepared three thousand swordsmen for you as you asked.”
“Thank you very much, Prince Jisung.” Jaemin bows his head. “This gesture will not be forgotten by the Jung family.”
“Hyung, you don’t have to be so formal to me.” Jisung assures. “But can I ask why you didn’t join the battles? How did you predict the number of swordsmen you need?”
“I was not allowed to because I was not experienced enough.” Jaemin sighs as he recalls the betrayal. “But I cannot stand not doing anything and being all worried inside the palace. So I looked up scriptures of the topography from my brother’s book collections. They have brought four thousand soldiers, only a thousand of those are swordsmen. Prince Mark wanted more archers to survey the higher grounds and prepare for battle. We do not have much advantage on the ground and the enemies are skilled swordsmen. So Prince Mark wanted to get the upper hand. However, the mountains are difficult to manoeuvre from our direction. It takes skills to be able to get past through numerous boulders before we could reach our enemy. Hence my brothers are betting on higher ground advantage.”
Prince Jisung’s eyes sparkled in wonder. He is still young and yet to understand the tactics of battles. However, he looks up to his older cousins and is hoping to become a respectable prince like them someday. “Then, what is your plan Hyung?”
“If we come from your direction, the access is easier to get to the mountains.” Jaemin says, taking a paper on the table and scribbling a makeshift map on it. “The enemy camp is right here on the flat ground in the middle of the mountain right next to our North Phoenix gate— the Jung family symbol. Our soldiers are currently coming from the southern direction which is the shortest route. However, it is a difficult route to use unless you are very familiar with it like my brother, Prince Jaehyun, is.”
Jaemin makes another line from the left towards the centre. “This is where your soldiers come in. The mountain only has two directions: south and west. Your kingdom has access to the west side of the mountain.”
“So you mean” Jisung pieces Jaemin’s plan together. “We are trapping the enemies inside the mountain?”
Jaemin nods. “It will take days for your soldiers to reach there but as long as we can hold the gate until your reinforcement arrives, the enemy will have no room for escape.”
“Hyung, you are very smart!” Jisung exclaims, surprising the Renjun and Haechan behind Jaemin. “If you went to the war with them, nobody will ever think of this genius idea! I wish I’d grow to be as smart as you!”
Jisung’s comment flattered Jaemin. Just a few days ago, Jaemin was moping in sadness upon not joining his beloved brothers and beloved knights. He felt that he didn’t have any purpose. But to hear Jisung complimenting his idea, Jaemin is now elated— as if he has finally found his purpose while watching over his kingdom.
After spending a night in the Iron Kingdom, Jaemin bids goodbye to his younger cousin and immediately heads to the Dragon Kingdom where his next ally is. The Zhong family is an old friend of the Jungs. However, Jaemin has only met the King and his young prince once. Times have passed and that young prince is now the current king.
He would be around Jisung’s age by now. Jaemin vaguely remembers.
“Isn’t sending five hundred archers too late?” King Chenle, the current king of Dragon Kingdom, questions Jaemin. Despite being younger than the Jung Prince, Chenle does not easily falter. They may have deep connections but requesting immediate reinforcements is a risk on Chenle’s kingdom. “Do not get me wrong, Prince Jaemin. I am an ally. However, my soldiers will be at risk. What is my end?”
“I am aware of it, your highness.” Jaemin answers calmly. Even with the existing treaty, negotiating with allied kingdoms still requires politics to maintain equality. Jaemin had to lend Jisung a patch of flat land at the north east for Prince Jisung’s army to train. “The South Phoenix gate is currently closed until the townspeople have recovered from the recent storm. However, the marine trade will commence starting tomorrow. We are willing to open the gates for you, your highness.”
“The South Phoenix gate, huh?” Chenle contemplates. Their marine trade had always been in the East Sea. But after building the newer palace where he currently resides, he is now closer to the South Sea. Not only that, the Jung Kingdom's enemies have been lurking in the East Sea gate as well— making Chenle’s marine trade more difficult. If the Jung Kingdom opens the South Phoenix gate, Chenle could easily build a successful trading business over there.
“May I add” Jaemin speaks with confidence “the South Phoenix gate connects to the South River and to South Sea where the kingdoms across the sea connect. It is geographically easy to access.”
Chenle ponders. What Prince Jaemin says is true. The South Sea is a circle of water surrounded by the ports of the neighbouring kingdoms. It is the most effective place to do trades. The worth of opening the South Phoenix gate is worth more than five hundred archers.
The Dragon Kingdom has the largest amount of soldiers among the allied nations and situated at the topmost mountain in the South. No enemy has ever infiltrated their kingdom and those who tried had failed and perished. The only problem for Jaemin is to earn King Chenle’s trust. However, the young king is known to dislike ambitious and pretentious people. If his kingdom cannot benefit from it, it would take a long while before he reaches his hand out to somebody. Jaemin has to convince him now.
Chenle leans back on his chair with a satisfied smirk. “I did not know there was a Jung who can make negotiations this easily with me. You’re even better than Prince Mark at talking.”
“Prince Mark goes by the book. That is why he is highly skilled at solving problems.” Jaemin says. “On the contrary, negotiations take different possibilities— including thinking outside the box. There will be unpredictable risks but going with instincts and building trust with potential friends are a must.”
Friends, huh. Chenle smiles. He hasn’t seen much people around his age. The only ones he is aware of are the three princes of Jung kingdom and the Iron Kingdom’s prince on the Far East. Yet, he is not friendly with them. The former King has raised him to build connections but never trust everything. And Chenle does wonder what it would feel like to talk to anyone around his age without minding the responsibilities of the Kingdom. He has long forgotten the feeling to have freedom as a prince as he quickly took the throne at a very young age of ten.
But if the Jung’s and Zhong’s have kept their bond more than centuries, Prince Jaemin may have the privilege of that trust. King Chenle feels pleased about the incoming future. “I like the idea of that, Prince Jaemin.”
Jaemin bows happily to the young king. “Once this war is over, I will personally come back here to thank you along with my two brothers and knights.”
Chenle looks at the two guards behind Jaemin, pointing at the very stiff Renjun and Haechan. “Will those two go to war too?”
Jaemin shakes his head. “No, these are the palace guards. Two of my knights, whom I’ve been friends with since I was a child, is currently battling alongside my brothers as we speak. Having you agreed to send your soldiers to fight with them is something I personally owe to you.”
To go these lengths in order to help those you treasure… Chenle looks at how worried Prince Jaemin’s expressions have become after mentioning his loved ones. To anxiously wait for their return… it’s something only a true bond can have.
The privilege of forming a relationship.
“Opening the South Phoenix gate is more than five hundred soldiers’ worth.” King Chenle says. “To go this extent, I know you treasure them deeply in your heart.”
I wish to have that bond someday as well.
The Jung Kingdom celebrates as the messenger relays they have won the battle and regained the southern wall. Jaemin, however, remains anxious as he awaits the news of his brothers and knights’ well beings— especially to the younger Jeno whom is yet to answer and confirm their feelings.
As the sun sets, several soldiers led by Ser Lee have finally reached the gates of the Jung Kingdom. They are welcomed with joyous praises and the night of festivity began.
From his window, Jaemin watches the ebony haired Ser Lee commanding medical help to those who have been injured while the rest go home to their families before the night falls, as the King and Queen prepared a banquet for them. Tents are set up as medical facilities for the incoming soldiers and princes. The King and Queen asked for Ser Lee’s presence to award him generously.
Jaemin looks at the clear skies above. Night has fallen and the other half of the army has not returned yet. Although he isn’t worried, Jaemin sits impatiently. They should be here any moment. He thinks, calculating the time they should reach. The older twin Jeno has led the first half of the army— mostly those who are severely injured to be tended soon and most of them are horsemen. The latter half is the ones who will have to bring more luggage and heavy vehicles such as tents and chariots. They will also have to make sure the gates of the southern kingdom are secured before retracting. Their journey could take twice as long as—
“They will come back soon.”
Jaemin turns to the man standing beside him.
Older Jeno looks at the sky where Jaemin had been and adds, “The princes are unscathed and my brother is alright and healthy. I told him to come back to you first but he insisted on me just because I have a light scratch.”
Jaemin notices the makeshift patches of clothing around Jeno’s arm that is now soaked in blood. There is one on his waist and legs as well. Jaemin’s heart sank.
“Hyung, you’re badly injured and you did not get them treated?” He’s been hit by arrows. Could have been poisoned! Despite their differences and constant fighting, Jaemin still treasures the older Jeno. He grew up with him. Both of them may not be on the same page most of the time, but it’s what makes their bond strong. They scold each other and tease each other but Jaemin is aware he is a goner without this Jeno. “How can you even manage to stand?”
Jeno shakes his head “They’re nothing but a scratch compared to the others— ow!”
Jaemin did not hesitate to touch the injury to prove Jeno’s pride wrong. The twins may have different personalities, but they are similar in every way. Only this Jeno refuses to show his weak sides compared to the younger Jeno who loves to complain. “Come, I’ll tend to your wounds and listen to your wailings.”
“I’ll be honest with you, I am still angry at you.” Jaemin starts as he cleans and sanitizes Jeno’s open wounds. Fortunately, they are not life threatening. Despite no tears, Jeno did profusely sweat when Jaemin stitches up his wounds and covers them with appropriate gauzes.
“I can feel your anger.” Jeno comments, wiping away his sweat with a fresh towel Jaemin gave him.
“I am not joking, Ser Lee.” Jaemin glares as he calls Jeno’s formal title. “I am genuinely hurt you don’t trust me, hyung. You know I could fight—“
“I know.” Jeno cuts the prince off. “I know you can fight and skilled enough to join the war. However, you’re too smart to be in the battlefield, my Prince. Your older brothers can fight but you can manage the kingdom. The kingdom does not only need good soldiers, they also need someone who can keep their stability within. If you weren’t here, do you think we could equally get food rations?”
The older twin pauses, making sure Jaemin is listening to him. “For years that I have been in war, this is the first time we were sent nutritious food, additional weapons, and reinforcement from other kingdoms. Do you see the difference you’ve made? If it weren’t for you being in charge of the kingdom, we would’ve been weaker and outnumbered by the enemies. I wanted you here because I was confident on how smart you work."
Jaemin’s eyes tremble at Jeno’s words. He actually sees me? Jaemin may not be in the battlefield but Jeno knows how hard he worked to support their army. He made sure to check their food rations, had the blacksmiths and woodworkers to create more weapons, and travelled to our allied kingdoms to send reinforcements. Jaemin poured his frustrations into making sure their armies are taken care for and that even if they lose, it would ease Jaemin’s heart that he helped as much as he could.
“At the same time,” Jeno says quietly that Jaemin barely hears it. “You're someone I hold very special. I can’t bear to lose you in the war.”
Jaemin fiddles at the gauze in his hand. I’m special to him? His stomach churns and feels a tingling sensation creeping up to his body. Jaemin’s heat spreads throughout his flesh and his heart begins to beat erratically. Does Jeno…
“I know you have feelings for my younger twin.” Jeno interrupts Jaemin’s thoughts. He knows the prince and the younger knight are closer than he could ever be with Jaemin. The older twin has long accepted that and he is satisfied standing behind Jaemin— protecting the prince in the background. “I don’t need your answer, Jaemin. I’m telling you this as a way for me to acknowledge my feelings and perhaps move on.”
Jaemin feels a sting at Jeno’s last words. Is Jeno moving on better for both of them? Jaemin could not understand this pain he feels. It is clear he has feelings for the younger twin but… is it worth losing the older twin?
“Hyung, I—“
Jaemin’s words are interrupted with a knock. The guard behind the wooden door announced that Prince Jaehyun, Prince Mark, the second Ser Lee, and the rest of the army has arrived.
Jaemin wishes to continue his sentence however, he is tongue tied. What am I supposed to tell him?
“Please do not feel complicated.” Jeno holds Jaemin’s hand. “I wish you and my brother well. Please take care of him. If he makes you cry, I’ll make sure he regrets it.”
“Not once…” Jaemin utters, looking up at Jeno who’s smiling genuinely in front of him. This Jeno rarely smiles. But when he does, Jaemin’s body would always feel warm and elated. His smile is always assuring Jaemin that everything is going to be okay.
“Yes?” Jeno asks.
Jaemin tightens his hold on Jeno’s warm hand. “We fight a lot but not once did you ever make me cry.”
Except for now, probably.
Jaemin welcomes the younger Jeno with a longing embrace. He missed how Jeno would hold him tightly and warmly after months of being away. The younger twin is always more expressive and open and that’s what Jaemin appreciates. Whenever Jaemin does something, the younger Jeno never hesitate to respond with the same sentiment. That is why Jaemin feels so right to confide to him.
They sit in the courtyard, quietly enjoying the muffled noises of the celebration outside the gated walls. This victory party will last a long while and the night has only begun.
“Jeno…” Jaemin starts, his heart beating as he shares the same space with the man he’s been waiting for so long. He will hear Jeno’s response tonight.
“I feel the same way, Jaemin.” Jeno answers without hesitation, looking at the youngest prince with confidence.
Jaemin’s eyes swell and the tears that he's been trying to hold since they parted finally fall down his face. So this is how it feels when to be happily fulfilled?
“You don’t have to cry, my prince.” Jeno chuckles, cupping Jaemin’s pretty face and wiping his tears away. “I’ve always felt the same.”
“Then,” Jaemin clears his throat. “Why did you make me wait?”
“I needed some thinking and the war opened my eyes to make the right decision when I have the opportunity.” Jeno leans into Jaemin’s forehead. “And I don’t want to regret wasting any more opportunities like this.”
Jaemin leans forward and as their lips are about to meet, both him and the young knight hear a noise. They turn and see the older Jeno standing at the doorway, motionless.
“I—“ Older Jeno opens his mouth and stutters. “I apologize.”
Jaemin turns to the courtyard to hide his embarrassment. Of all people to catch them, it had to be the older twin!
The older twin turns “I should leave you—“
“Brother, stop” the younger Jeno announces, surprising both Jaemin and his older twin. “You need to hear something.”
The older twin reluctantly faces them. Younger Jeno then continues, “Another thing that the war made me realize is that there’s nothing wrong about feeling torn in love. Brother, be honest with your feelings.”
The older knight shifts his position as he hesitantly looks at Jaemin and his brother. “What do you mean?”
“You love Jaemin, don’t you?”
Jaemin’s eyes widen. Did Hyung tell Jeno?
“Don’t worry about it.” Older Jeno says. “I have told Jaemin I will move on.”
“Why?” The younger twin pries.
“Why?” The older brother repeats. “Because I want you two to be happy.”
“So you are sacrificing your feelings over ours?” Younger Jeno questions.
The older twin grits his teeth. Painful as it may be, this is the truth. “Yes because Jaemin loves you and not me.”
“How can you be so sure?” Younger Jeno looks at the confused eyes of Jaemin and his brother. This time, he asks Jaemin. “Is what he said correct? That you don’t love him?”
“I…” Jaemin hesitates. It is true, right? However, when he thinks back about losing the older twin, Jaemin bursts into tears once again. “I… can’t…”
I can’t choose.
“I see the way you look at my older brother, Jaemin.” Younger Jeno says with an assuring smile as he holds Jaemin’s shoulders. “It’s more than platonic.”
“Brother, what are you implying?” Older Jeno questions this time.
“If he does not love you the way he does to me, I would not have felt jealousy.” The younger Jeno explains. “You may think he pays more attention to me but you are wrong. Jaemin treats us equally. He spends time with me as much as he spends time with you. Whenever you are sick or injured, he never leaves your side until you are better. I was the naughtier twin and had made Jaemin cry countless of times when we were still children but you are always his shining knight, brother. I may be the one to always make him smile but you’re the one who never fails to protect him.”
Jaemin thinks about what the younger Jeno had said. It’s true, the older Jeno is irreplaceable in his heart. Both are equally important and he holds strong feelings for. He cannot bear to lose one.
“So when Jaemin confessed, I asked him to give me time. After all, this relationship involves two people I care about and love.” The younger Jeno adds. “I want Jaemin to be happy and loved. And if it takes both of us to make it happen, I would welcome it.”
“You…” Jaemin finally speaks. “You don’t mind if I have feelings for your brother as well?”
Younger Jeno shakes his head. “What I want is to take care of you and love you with all my heart. If my brother could give you that mutual feeling as well, then there is nothing wrong with that for me. He's the only one I know and trust that can take care of you other than me.”
“Am I really allowed to?” Older Jeno voices out. He takes a look at Jaemin, thinking of the endless possibilities he can have if he could also hold Jaemin in his arms as freely as his brother could. He held back all these years and promised to himself that he will only watch from afar once Jaemin makes his choice. He accepted his heartbreak long ago.
“That’s for Jaemin to decide.” Younger Jeno looks at Jaemin hopefully.
Jaemin stands up from his seat and walks towards the older twin, holding his warm hand. These are the hands of the man who protected him, his family, and his country. The hands of the man who is willing to sacrifice his feelings for the people he loves.
The man who is so selfless he would rather get hurt than hurt the ones he cares about.
The twins might be different, but it’s that difference that makes Jaemin appreciate both men.
“Can I really love two people?” Jaemin asks. But it seems he isn’t just asking the two brothers. He also asks himself that. Can my heart really love them? Or is that selfish of me?
“Love is love.” The younger Jeno answers. “To love someone is not a crime. You can love whoever you want as long as you do not betray or hurt anyone.”
Jaemin looks at the older Jeno, whom seems as torn as him. “Will you— will you two really accept me?”
The older Jeno looks into his brother’s assuring smile before cupping Jaemin’s face. I am not betraying by brother…
Jaemin closes his eyes and smiles in relief as if a thorn had been plucked from his skin. My heart is free to love two people; more fulfilling and happier.
He cups the older Jeno’s face, leaning in to meet the lips that he had almost lost after being so afraid to open his feelings.
“What about me?” Younger Jeno chuckles as he gets up to hold Jaemin’s waist. Jaemin turns and gives the younger Jeno a kiss. “Sweet”
Before they could celebrate their love even further, deafening screams are heard within the palace walls. The next thing Jaemin sees is a loud explosion and smoke fills the hallways— blinding them from any incoming attack.
Both knights shout and hold Jaemin close, drawing their sword as to guard Jaemin between them. Jaemin also unsheathes his own sword and their battle with the unknown enemy begins.
The Jung Kingdom’s festive night became louder from the ambush. The enemy spies had infiltrated the army during the march led by Jaemin’s brothers as the enemy’s last resort. They were waiting for the time to catch the kingdom off guard in order to attack the palace and murder the royal family.
Fortunately for Jaemin, his best knights are right beside him. However, they did not go unscathed. They were outnumbered but managed to make it out alive towards the main hall where the other royal members are.
At the same time, royal armies of the allied kingdoms are still present and the counterattack deemed successful. Once again, they have won the war.
A few days pass and the Jung Kingdom is fully restored. The damages are repaired and more royal guards are recruited to watch over the walls. Those who have been injured are constantly regaining their health and now, the kingdom is celebrating their grand victory— awarding the royal armies and their allied nations for their bravery and loyalty. The twin knights are also awarded for their capabilities of leading an army successfully. Prince Jaehyun, Prince Mark, and Prince Jaemin were honoured accordingly as well.
As the townspeople celebrate with the King and Queen, Jaemin walks to the side and stands between his twin lovers. He holds both of their hands, showing two matching rings for the older and younger Jeno while a complimentary diamond engagement ring on Jaemin’s finger.
Forever with my two beloved knights who share the same face and name. Two people whom my heart gravitates to— my sun and my moon.
As they walk towards the palace gardens, younger Jeno embraces Jaemin lovingly. “I hate to part with you, my love. But I have a duty to do directly from the King and Queen.”
Jaemin returns the gesture, fully understanding that not only they are his lovers but they are respected knights with oaths to serve the kingdom. “It’s alright, my love. I will be inside the palace anyways.”
“Hyung,” Younger Jeno tells his brother. “Take care of our Jaemin, please?”
Older Jeno places his hand securely around Jaemin’s waist. “You have nothing to worry about.”
“I am so happy my brother and I could take turns being by your side.” Younger Jeno cups the prince’s beautiful face. “I have fewer worries when I am not beside you.”
He then places a chaste kiss at his lover before bidding his goodbyes to the two.
Jaemin sighs as he comfortable leans his body against the older Jeno. His eyes chase the features of the man— strong an unnerving unlike his brother who would smile at anything like an excited puppy.
“What is it?” Jeno returns Jaemin’s gaze.
Jaemin grins “It feels quite a bit strange still that you have no duties to do but stay beside me for the whole day.”
Jeno clears his throat. True, he spends more time with Jaemin now compared to the past. Pondering, Jeno thinks being honest would not hurt. His pride maybe, but the cost is not bad if it’s Jaemin’s affection on the line. “They were excuses I made to suppress my growing feelings.”
“Hyung, you’re adorable.” Jaemin coos, facing Jeno to embrace the stoic man firmly. “Could you feel my heart beating? That’s my love for you growing.”
Jaemin does not miss the reddening ears of older Jeno.
“Your brother is my sun. He is the one who stands by me in my wakening hours— the one I wake up to and the one who brings light to my day. But you are my moon. The one who always sees my transparency and my sadness— where I express my tiredness, loneliness, and frustrations. You’re the one who always sees and hears my cries and your coldness comforts my fiery heart. Both of you are beautiful and I am one lucky prince to have you two guard my heart.”
Jeno leans into Jaemin’s touch, confusing the young prince. “Perhaps the moon needs some warmness sometimes.”
Jaemin smiles into the crook of Jeno’s neck. His body felt numb, but it was a kind of numbness that is sweet and brings fullness to his being.
Jeno snakes his hand beneath Jaemin’s ear to pull the prince’s face up as he kisses Jaemin’s saccharine lips he’s grown addicted to. “Do you want to take a ride with me this afternoon to visit my brother? He’d be delighted.”
Jaemin beams at the thought. He will spend the rest of his life loving and being loved. Not only that, he may have truly found his right purpose in the kingdom.
The bonsai may have been restricted, but because of it that it became important not only in the palace but in their culture and tradition as well. At the same time, it is beautiful as it is— both in the day and in the night.
“I will have to introduce you two to my new friend.” Jaemin announces to the twins once he and the older twin arrive at the archery ground where younger Jeno is resting next to the protégée guards.
“You found a new friend?” Younger Jeno asks and Jaemin nods while looking at Renjun and Haechan.
“Renjun and Haechan may replace your positions as well once we marry. So train them hard from now on because your footsteps are hard to follow”
Younger Jeno lets out a loud chuckle while the older twin turns to his side. “Next time, you should come with me and see how hyung shouts at them.”
Jaemin turns to the older Jeno with an amused expression. “I haven’t seen you shout.”
“I” Jeno’s ears once again turn red. “I don’t shout at you.”
“You were true to your promise, Prince Jaemin.” Chenle welcomes the Jung Prince as well as the two guards who look similar to each other apart from their black and blonde hair. “Are they the knights you were talking about?”
“Yes, my King.” Jaemin beams proudly. “But right now I am presenting them to you as my fiancés. After all, friends are free to share their happiness.”
“Is that so?” Chenle smiles. There are moments where King Chenle feels elated. However, he has no one to confide to. If Prince Jaemin could share his sentiment, wouldn’t it be nice?
“Yesterday…” King Chenle contemplates. “We have built a new market for textile in the South Phoenix gates. It seems business is doing well.”
“That’s wonderful!” Jaemin exclaims, surprising the withdrawn King. “I am looking for textile stores to be used for our wedding. This is fantastic, your highness! I cannot wait to invite you soon.”
Chenle is left speechless by the announcement. “I am invited?”
“Of course” Jaemin nods. “You are not only an ally but my friend as well. Your presence on my special day will bring me so much joy.”
“Thank you, Prince Jaemin.” King Chenle bows, astonishing not only Jaemin and his knights, but Chenle’s palace staff as well. “I am very fortunate to find a friend in you. This gesture will be remembered until my last predecessor.”
“Knights.” Chenle calls for the twins.
“Yes, your highness.” Both Jenos chorused as they kneeled down.
“Thank you for protecting my people as well during the war. Please know my soldiers have come to me to praise you for your heroic acts.” King Chenle says. “Now that Prince Jaemin and I have strengthened our Kingdom’s relationship, I want you to take care of Prince Jaemin. Simply, do not make him cry or worry him because I will not hesitate to come for you personally.”
“We do not wish of that.” Older Jeno replies. “I, no, we have protected Jaemin all our lives and that will not change, your highness.”
“Your friend is in good hands.” Younger Jeno adds. “Please do not hesitate to come to the Jung kingdom if you wish to spend time with Prince Jaemin. You will be welcomed with open arms.”
“What you have is very beautiful, Prince Jaemin. Someday,” the King turns to the young Prince, “I wish I could experience the same.”
“And you will your highness.” Jaemin bows to return the gesture. “Time is infinite. Someday, you will have people you will treasure and who will treasure you back. I am one of them.”
Just like that bonsai tree that’s beautifully displayed under the sun and moon, Jaemin has carved and structured his own history, making new friends and finding true love in the form of his own beauty and intelligence.
Both twins hold Jaemin’s hand as they bid goodbyes to King Chenle, excitement washing over them for their new future to come.
Their wedding was beautiful— both blessed by the kingdom, their allies, and the gods. Jaemin could not wish for more happiness. His heart is full and he is loved.
Both the sun and the moon has witnessed him grow and nurture.
Both have seen his ups and downs.
And similar to the twins, the sun and the moon may be opposite but they look after Jaemin in their own way.
