Chapter Text

A cold breeze ruffled Peter’s hair as he stared out over New York City. His feet dangled over the edge of the building, bouncing against the bricks. He looked down at the city below him, all the people scurrying to and fro, and sighed. Today had been a very shitty day. He still couldn’t believe Harry broke up with him on New Year’s Eve, just hours before they were expected at the Osborn New Year’s party.

He felt a presence come up behind him, but didn’t turn to look. There was only one person who had access to this rooftop aside from Peter. The heat at his back felt nice, and Peter enjoyed it in silence for a while until a soft question broke it.

“What are you doing up here?” Tony asked.

Peter jerked, glancing behind himself. Sure enough, Tony Stark was standing behind him. He furrowed his brow, confused because he had assumed it was his aunt behind him.

“Tony? What are you doing here?” Peter asked, earning a chuckle from the man.

“I just asked you that, Pete,” Tony said.

“Yes, but,” Peter huffed a laugh. “This is my aunts roof.”

“Point,” Tony conceded. “I’m here because May told me you were out here, and I wanted to see you.”

“Oh,” Peter breathed. “Right, well, here I am.”

“Yes, here you are,” Tony said. “But why the roof? I thought you had some party with your boyfriend.”

If he didn’t know better, Peter would think Tony said the word ‘boyfriend’ like it was a curse. Though, Peter supposed, Tony had made his feelings on the Osborn family perfectly clear from day one.

“I did, until Harry broke up with me,” Peter murmured, sighing and turning back to look out over the city.

“On New Year’s Eve? Damn, that’s rough,” Tony said, leaning against the ledge beside Peter. “I can relate.”

“You can?” Peter asked, looking over at the man.

“Sure can,” Tony said, shaking his head. “Pepper called it quits tonight.”

“Damn,” Peter said. “Sorry, man.”

Tony hummed, and they lapsed into silence for a while until Tony broke it again.

“You know what? I don’t want to mope,” Tony said. Peter looked at him with a raised brow. “You got any shit that Osborn gave you?”

“Yeah,” Peter said, nodding. “I’ve got pictures, clothes, stuff like that.”

“I’ve got pictures, letters, things like that, too,” Tony mused. “Wanna burn ‘em?”

Peter laughed, but nodded. Why not? After the way Harry dumped Peter - not just on New Year’s Eve, not just hours before the party, but the words he used to do it? - he was never going back to the man. This was it for Peter.

“C’mon, grab yours and we’ll head to mine so I can gather my shit,” Tony said. “We can light a fire and burn it all.”

“I like that idea,” Peter said. “Out with the old, and all that.”

He twisted around and hopped off the ledge. Tony followed behind him as Peter went into the stairwell and jogged down the steps. It didn’t take long to gather everything he had from Harry and soon enough Peter was pressing a kiss to May’s temple and following Tony to the man’s car.

They talked idly on the way, catching up on each other’s lives. It hadn’t been long since they’d last seen each other, but Peter realized how much of himself he held back from Tony while in his relationship with Harry. At the beginning, Peter still told Tony everything. After a while, though, it felt like he was cheating on Harry. Not physically - Tony had never even looked at Peter like that - but emotionally.

Tony parked in the underground garage, and Peter followed him up in the private elevator to the penthouse. It took Tony longer to gather the things he wanted to burn, but that wasn’t surprising. Peter had been with Harry for three years, Tony had been with Pepper for much longer. He sat at the kitchen counter while Tony went through his apartment, grabbing things here and there.

“Alright, let’s do this,” Tony said, coming up beside Peter with a box in his hands.

“Let’s do this,” Peter agreed. Peter crouched in front of the fireplace and frowned. “Tony, how are we supposed to burn shit with this? It’s electric.”

“Who said anything about the fireplace?” Tony asked, heading towards the balcony.

Huffing a laugh, Peter followed behind the man. He watched Tony light a fire pit Peter hadn’t seen before, and then wandered closer. The heat felt nice, and Peter sat on one of the chairs surrounding it.

“Out with the old,” Tony said, dropping the first picture into the flames.

“Out with the old,” Peter agreed, tossing a whole stack on the fire.

They alternated throwing things in until their boxes were empty. Peter stared into the orange glow, watching bits of paper and cloth float into the air, and sighed. Tony caught his gaze across the fire and Peter shivered. When Tony stood and walked around the fire pit, Peter leaned back, looking up at the man’s approach.

He stopped less than a foot away from Peter and his hand jerked, lifting and then dropping back down. Peter bit his lip, reaching his hand out to take Tony’s. The older man tightened his grip and stepped closer, tugging Peter to his feet.

“Peter,” Tony said, voice soft.

“Tony?” Peter asked, leaning into the man.

“It’s almost midnight,” Tony said, and Peter frowned.

“Yeah,” Peter said. “Are you- Do you want me to leave?”

“No,” Tony said, shaking his head to emphasize the point. “I want you to stay.”

“I want to stay, too,” Peter whispered.

“Peter, I want you to stay, with me,” Tony said, and Peter’s eyes widened slightly. His breath caught, and he searched Tony’s face, trying to determine if he was understanding correctly.

“Stay, stay?” Peter asked. “Stay the- stay the night with you?”

“If you want,” Tony said. “I very much want to kiss you right now.”

“Please,” Peter whispered, leaning closer.

Tony didn’t hesitate, leaning down and pressing his lips to Peter’s. Their first kiss was chaste, a soft brush of lips. Their second was no different, but then Tony nipped Peter’s bottom lip. He gasped and Tony took advantage, pressing his tongue inside Peter’s mouth.

Peter’s arms wound around Tony’s neck as the kiss deepened, and Tony’s hands settled on Peter’s waist. Behind them, the New Year’s fireworks burst into the sky. They kissed for several minutes before finally coming up for air. Tony rested his forehead against Peter’s as they panted for breath, each tightening their grip on the other.

“Happy New Year, Peter,” Tony murmured.

“Happy New Year, Tony,” Peter replied.

Out with the old, in with the new.
