Notes:

This is the first fanfic I wrote! I did it in the middle of last year but I hadn't published it here although I couldn't really say why.
At that time I don't know why I liked to put song lyrics as if Stan wrote them, so when you get to those parts, well, there they are hehe

Chapter 1: conflict

Chapter Text

Kyle and Stan spent all their time together, visiting each other's houses and spending days living under the same roof. They were each other's first choice when telling each other things or simply providing moral support.
Stan adored the relationship he had with his best friend, however, since Cartman and Heidi broke up, Kyle didn't talk about anything other than the "poor girl" who was being manipulated by his ex-boyfriend and he was so tired of it...

The days seemed more boring and getting out of bed to attend classes was a matter of double effort. Still, he kept trying.
That day he arrived minutes late to class because his father, who was driving him, had taken longer than usual arguing with his mother.

When he arrived, he saw at the end of the hallway a circle of students shouting and supporting something, so he ran towards them.
The crowd saw Kyle on top of Cartman beating him. It was something common for them, but given the new circumstances the fights that those two had escalated in intensity.
Kenny hugged the redhead from behind to separate him. While Stan dropped to the floor to try to free them from his grip from there.

''easy, eay, let him go.'' The blonde said between laughs. He had a very strange sense of humor and these situations did not stress him out. He spread both his arms, lifted him off of Cartman, and kept him calm. Kyle couldn't stop shaking and trying to get out of his grasp.

''Girlfriend-stealing Jew! You are fucking trash!'' Cartman yelled from the floor. Stan was trying to help him up, but Eric wasn't cooperating.

The brunette girl with the flower hat approached the center, standing in front of Kyle who was still being held by Kenny. ''You're going to get in trouble, stop it!'' she demanded with very worried eyes. ''Leave it like this.'' She continued. He seemed to want to cry and just seeing her like that made the redhead calm down.

When the blonde noticed the presence of the PC principal he ran away and disappeared. Stan believed the reason was his previous calls for attention, as he couldn't afford to get into trouble again.

''And now what the hell happened?'' The adult intervened. ''To my office, Broflovski, Cartman, Turner and Marsh!''

Stan refuted immediately and with a frown. '' I? But if I don't...''

''To my office!''

The area began to clear and the four of them headed along the hallway. He could watch Cartman all the way to the front turning occasionally to glare back murderously.
Then followed Heidi and Kyle, who looked at each other without saying anything.

Once inside the office, the director forced them to sit down and tell their versions.

''Kyle manipulated my girlfriend into breaking up with me.'' Cartman began to declare. ''When he achieved it, he began to walk with her wherever I was, making dirty Jew faces and bragging that he had won her''

''Shut up, fat ass, it didn't happen like that!'' The redhead refuted immediately.

''We're going to take turns, Broflovski.'' The principal interrupted him. ''Eric continue and without offending.''

Stan didn't know why he had to be present and he really wished he could leave right away. It was a waste of time anyway. What did the director want to solve with that talk? Cartman and Kyle would never fix things between them.

''Today was no different from others.'' Eric continued. ''He started to offend and threaten me but I couldn't get far enough away when he started hitting me.''

The redhead didn't stop moving from his spot, he seemed to have more energy to want to hit him. Stan watched beside him as his feet twisted and his hands caught in the unfortunate fabric of his pants.

''Okay, Marsh, your turn.''

Turn for what? He had no idea what to say in the first place, much less interest.
Everyone turned their gaze towards him, who until then had only seen the floor. He did not want to defend either of his two friends, he was very fed up with their attitude. ''There was a lot of scandal in the hallways.'' He swallowed and continued. ''When I got to them, Kyle was on top of Cartman. I don't know much more.''

The redhead had already looked away from his best friend and was staring at the director with lowered eyebrows and sparkling eyes. Stan knew he was disappointed and expected more from him. He knew it by the way Kyle's jaw had hardened and by his pursed lips.

''Okay, continue Kyle.''

''He's an idiot, stalking son of a bitch!''

''Broflovski! Enough. You're not going to come to my office with that attitude.'' He warned.

Kyle adjusted his ushanka tightly while looking the director in the eyes and spoke again. ''We were talking in the hallway when we saw him approaching. I suggested walking in the opposite direction to avoid him, but he started yelling and insulting us.'' He sighed, looked at Heidi and continued. ''I would have ignored him, but he said derogatory things about Didi in front of everyone who walked the hallways. So I hit him to shut him up.''

''A hit?? Look at my face, Kahl, it's broken, you idiot!'' Cartman pointed to his face as he held his nose up to prevent it from dripping.

''No insults Eric.'' The principal spoke again. ''Okay, what things were so horrible that you reacted like that?''

'' I'm not going to repeat them.'' In his voice it could palp the anger that was growing again.

The dialogue made Stan sick, it was a waste of time to be there and see how his best friend acted as the girl's biggest protector...why was he defending her so much? ''I can retire? I have nothing more to contribute here.'' He spoke with annoyance.

''One second Marsh, we're on to something. Heidi? Could you tell us your version?''

''Well, essentially that's what Ky already told... Eric spoke horrible things and-''

''Can you mention them?''

''He said t-that I...'' Heidi's hazel eyes were turning glassy.

'' Wasn't it enough with half the students making fun?'' Kyle came to his defense. ''Do she have to repeat it for you too?''

The brunette hurried out of the direction while held back her tears after that. Kyle was going to follow her, but he stopped as soon as the director spoke to him again.

''Honestly, your attitude is tiring me, Broflovski.''

''There are two of us now...'' Stan mentioned with a lot of weight in his voice. He was looking at the ceiling, lying in his seat and ignoring the gaze of his best friend.

''I will talk to your parents and I will lower your behavior points. I can't suspend you because of your clean record and excellent grades, but another scene like this and you have no doubt I will.''

''And Cartman?!'' He claimed immediately. ''He harasses us every day, he ha-''

'' There's not enough to say anything about him as opposed to you with your bloody fists and his broken nose.''

''But anyone could tell you how shit it is! Even you know it! Stan, tell him!'' He turned to the black-haired for help.

But he never wanted to be involved in all this. He hated arguments, they made him anxious. Did it hurt him that his friend was punished? Of course, in the past he had saved him on several occasions just like this one, but right at that moment absolutely nothing was coming to him.

''Stan? ...'' Kyle's rage was outside of him, now he was only looking for his best friend, but he had no answer.

''Retire. Do not doubt that there will be worse consequences if you continue like this.'' He pointed to Kyle.

Cartman immediately left the office, Stan imitated him and walked as fast as he could, but when he had taken a few steps away from him, a green gloved hand reached out and pulled him by the arm.

''Dude, what the hell?'' He said with his face contorted in disgust.

Stan was upset, about what exactly? He didn't know, but his head wasn't working right to have that conversation. ''The only thing I saw was you hitting him very neurotically.'' He said bluntly.

''But you know me.'' His eyes were big and his eyebrows were surprised. ''I would never react for free, you know that!''

He couldn't deny him that, he knew well that Cartman always provoked him. Kyle was very touchy and responsive, but he was rarely the other way around. ''You're right, I-''

''And how would I allow him to continue hurting her?'' He added before letting him finish speaking.

Which bothered him again for a strange reason. ''Bah, I have to go.'' He said annoyed and began to take a step back when Kyle accused him again.

''Stan? what the hell, dude? I'm talking.''

''Listen, you're not innocent all the time either. You can be very idiotic.''

''... What?''

''You act like a girlfriend stealer breaking the fat's heart. Wasn't it obvious that by taking her away he would go after you? It even seems like you purposely seek conflict with him.'' His mouth wanted to spit out that poison simply to hurt. Why did he feel this way? It wasn't good...

''Man, she is not an object to 'steal' I hate that you all use that term when talk about Didi. Why not-''

''Yeah whatever dude.'' He finished saying. Rolled his eyes, turned around, and continued toward his destination without letting him finish his sentence.
