Work Text:
Jacket flicked through the TV channels to try and ignore the sounds of the girl barfing her guts up. “Tch… Second time today…” he sighed. The girl was skittish, never made much eye contact, never made much conversation, Jacket was fine with that. He wasn't one for conversation much either. Or maybe she was just scared of when he came home at two am and was drenched in blood.
Probably not.
Jacket put his cigarette out and got up from his bed, it was time for cold pizza. Jacket looked in the fridge, empty pizza box, half empty bottle of soda, few cans of beer and nothing to eat. “Do you seriously only eat pizza?” A soft voice asked from behind. Jacket turned his head to see the girl, wearing a teal tee shirt he had given her and a black pair of shorts. Jacket processed the question.
“I guess.” He mumbled. “But I should probably go grocery shopping here soon…” Jacket sighed and closed the door.
The girl shook her head. “By the way, I never said thank you for… saving me from that place…” She muttered quietly. “My name's Donna by the way.” The girl introduced herself.
Right. Names. Jacket had lived with this girl for the past four days and not even told her his name. “I'm… Jacket. Well my name is Richard but I get called Jacket.” He said and walked over to the front door. “I'm going grocery shopping, is there anything you want?” Jacket asked.
“To come with.”
“You have horrid taste in coffee.” Donna commented.
“Light roast isn’t that bad-” Jacket scowled. They were standing in the grocery section of walmart, arguing about coffee- like idiots.
“It’s practically flavorless!” Donna argued. Jacket rolled his eyes. She wasn’t wrong though. But dark roast was too bitter for jacket’s taste.
“Get over yourself, lady, I’ll get the medium roast, okay?” Jacket sighed and threw the medium coffee in the shopping cart.
“Thanks!” Donna chirped and gave a slight smile. Jacket didn’t particularly like coffee, especially coffee that was any darker than light roast, but he liked that smile.
Jacket didn’t like much at all actually, other than pizza, (hurting other people), cigarettes, and that smile.
“Uhm- is something on my face?” Donna asked. Jacket realized he had been staring at her for a bit and shook his head.
“Nah. Let's just keep going.” He mumbled.
“$25 for sheets?” Jacket exclaimed.
“That's obscene..” Donna agreed. She held a plain package of sheets in her hands for her bed. “Wonder if there's a chea-” She mumbled and looked at the shelves.
“No, no we can get them, I’m just surprised at how pricey they are.” Jacket sighed. Besides killing Russians came with a Phat paycheck.
“Are you sure though-”
“Yes, I’m sure-
“Really it’s fine!”
“No, we can get the sheets.”
“But $25-”
This went on for several minutes before Jacket just ripped the package of sheets from her hands and threw them in the shopping cart. “We’re getting the sheets. Now go pick out whatever blankets you want, geez…” Jacket grumbled.
“Fine… you seriously are persistent.” Donna sighed.
“I could say the same for you.”
“Why would you need shampoo, you can just use dish soap, all purpose, bodywash, shampoo, toothpaste-” Jacket listed off the many practical uses of dish soap. “Why are you looking at me like that?” He asked.
“Bodywash, I can understand, shampoo, not as much but it makes sense on why your hair looks like that- but toothpaste?! Richard! Why?” Donna sighed. Jacket was semi embarrassed at her using his actual name.
“Cause… It’s all soap?” Jacket tried to reason. Donna stared blankly at him.
“Yeah, we’re getting some proper toiletries.” She declared and walked down the soap aisle. Jacket pushed along the cart. So what his old man had taught him was a lie… duly noted.
“Smell this one, it’s orange.” Donna requested and held a bottle of shampoo up to Jacket. He took a whiff, it was nice- but the girl was already rushing around looking at different scents, apricot, cherry, strawberry, mango, mint, rosemary, they all smelt nice other than the coconut that reminded him of hawaii too much. So he selected the orange three in one body wash, shampoo and conditioner, while Donna chose a strawberry scented body wash and rose scented shampoo and conditioner.
Most of the time grocery shopping was just buying some tv dinners and beer for Jacket. But this time, it felt less like a chore.
