Summary:

Nick planned on proposing to Charlie soon. And when Charlie's in London for visiting Isaac, he decides to visit Jane and Julio Spring to ask for their approval for asking Charlie to marry him.

Work Text:

"Nick! What a nice surprise of you," I say as I open the door and look into a nervous face of Nick.

"Yeah, um, hi. Is Jane home, too?," Nick asks nicely. And still, he seems restless. Like he was really concerned, what we'll say next.

"Yes, she is. Do you want to talk with us? Is something up with Charlie?"

"N-no, not like that. C-can we sit down for that?," I lead him to the kitchen and call after Jane, who lays on the couch, reading a book that Isaac recommended her. It's cute how she gets a list of five to ten books every month. Books he read and thought, that Jane would like it. Since she's in therapy herself, she recovers her true self. And the more she recovers, she becomes the better version of the young woman, I chose to marry all those years ago.

"Hey Nick," she says with a small smile on her face.

"Hey," Nick replies, smiling brightly, nice as always. He was always like that. That sweet and kind.

At the time, we sit down on the kitchen it feels like a weird coincidence that we sit like this. It remembers me about when Charlie told us about Nick being his boyfriend.

"I came because I wanted to ask you for something," Nick says with a shaky voice. Wow, is it really that bad, I wonder.

"I'm listening, Nick," my wife says and I nod at it.

"I-I've w-wanted to ask you t-two for y-your a-approval. I want to p-propose to Charlie."

Oh. Oh. He asked for my and Jane's approval to propose to Charlie. I'm really surprised. I was expecting something– different? I don't know.

"U-us? Nick, even if we'd say no, sooner or later one of you would ask the other anyway. So, in my opinion, yes," Jane says, smiling like a little child.

"Of course, Nick. You've got my approval, too." Nick's face lift up and it looks like his about to beam out of here by his happiness.

"Sorry if I'm too forward but do you have a ring?," my wife asks him and he flushes a little.

"Y-yeah. Here," he says and gives her a small box with a ring in it. The ring is simply decorated with a small yellow stone. Minimalist and definitely suitable for Charlie. (AN- Well, we're still talking about Nick here)

A few minutes later, Jane's still holding the box, we hear the keys rattling in the front door. "I'm home," someone calls. It's my daughter Tori. "I've got someone with me," she says and in exactly that moment, a curly head appears in the kitchen.

"Charlie," croaks Nick. "Wh-what're you doing h-here?"

"Nick? I could ask you the same thing," Charlie walks to him and places a kiss on his dark blond hair. "What's that?," he adds, pointing to the box which is now lying on the table.

"N-nothing," Nick manages to say and grabs it, so Charlie can't look in it. Charlie's eyes widen when he eventually realizes what this box really was.

"Did you w-want to p-propose to m-me?," he stutters.

Nick answers with a hoarsely voice, "yeah. I was here to get their approval." Then he gets up, takes Charlie's left hand and knees down, deeply looking in his eyes. "Since you know it now, would you, Charles Francis Spring, actually marry me? I wanted to prepare a small speech."

"Oh my god, of course, Nick."
