The technician squirts gel onto Lily’s pelvis.
“Oh, that’s cold.” Lily looks at Severus, who has a preoccupied expression, and gently holds his hand in reassurance. Sirius is holding his other hand.
The technician laughs. “It can be. Are you ready to see your fetus?”
Sirius, like an excited puppy, rushes to say, “Yes.” Lily giggles and smiles at her best friend’s husband. She adores how excited Sirius is to be a father. It confirms that she made the right decision in choosing to be Severus' and Sirius' surrogate.
The technician presses the ultrasonic device on Lily’s pelvis and begins moving it while looking at a screen. Lily’s anxiety is slowly rising in the silence. What if something is wrong with the baby? What if she has to terminate the pregnancy? Would that make her a failure of a surrogate?
She squeezes Severus’ hand.
“Are you alright?” Severus frowns.
"Fine, I'm just excited to see your baby.” Lily knows Severus does not believe she is telling the whole truth, but he does not press her. She appreciates it.
“Look at that. You have two little ones in you.” The technician points at the screen, showing the soon to be parents.
It’s a chorus of “What” from Lily, Severus, and Sirius.
“They did tell us this could be possible.” Severus murmurs, his face blank, not expressing his feelings about the news.
“All this means is that you now have double the child to love. I know you will be wonderful fathers to twins.”
“They’ll have each other and become best friends. I loved having a brother as a kid to play with. I was never lonely.” Sirius kisses his husband on the cheek. “There’s nothing to worry about. We have a whole bunch of friends to help us out with our little ones when they come into this world.”
Severus leans on Sirius and whispers something that Lily can’t hear. The technician tells them the doctor will be with them soon and leaves.
