I Couldn’t Get Out

Summary:

I understand this probably won’t get much attention, but I feel it is necessary to share a new song that I wrote, or at least just the lyrics, so y’all can get a better idea of what I’ve been going through. I’m really proud of this song, but it probably sounds better in my head when I know what it sounds like versus what it sounds like to someone who’s never seen it before. So I guess it can mostly be taken as a poem because I don’t have the music.

Notes:

Okay, so, I know some more explanation is in order. I wrote this song quite recently, I think it was January 29, about my own life experiences, and let it be known, that in the song, when I’m talking about being lost in my sins, I’m talking about struggling with temptation, which are really not some if my finer moments, especially since I receded to my temptation more after I wrote this song, but now I’m hoping I’m back for good. It’s been a long time, which will soon be apparent as we get on with the song… er, whatever it will seem like to you. Poem.

Work Text:

I Couldn’t Get Out - Lyrics

(Verse 1)
All I saw was darkness
There was no answer to my questions
I tried to reach out but I kept falling down
There was nothing under me to raise me up

(Bridge)
And it was all because of my own doing
I brought this on myself
And it was all because I let the world drive me instead of God

(Verse 2)
I thought it was simple but I’d never felt this way before
I didn’t know, that I couldn’t have it all
Why did I never notice the thing I thought I liked was strictly against the thing I loved?

(Bridge)
I thought it was simple but it really wasn’t at all
Why did I think I could have it all?
When the only thing I needed was God

(Verse 3)
Every time you lifted me up
I fell down deeper
I couldn’t get out when I was lost in my sins
I thought I knew you
Thought you knew me
But I guess I was wrong

(Bridge)
I’d been saved before
I’d talked to God, loved Him, asked Him to forgive me my sins, He did
But I fell down again

(Chorus)
I couldn’t get out
Couldn’t get out without You
I couldn’t get out
Couldn’t get out without You
I thought I loved You
Thought I loved You
But I guess that was wrong

(Bridge)
I’d been saved before
I’d talked to God, loved Him, asked Him to forgive me my sins, He did
But I fell down again

(Verse 4)
I never thought it would be this way with me
I was supposed to be the one who lifted others up not the other way around
How did this happen to me?
How could I have fallen so low when I was so devout?
How did this happen to me?
How did Satan get his hook in me?

(Bridge)
And it was all because of my own doing
I brought this on myself
And it was all because I let the world drive me instead of God

(Chorus)
I couldn’t get out
Couldn’t get out without You
I couldn’t get out
Couldn’t get out without You
I thought I loved You
Thought I loved You
But I guess that was wrong

(Verse 5)
I can’t say why I never saw it
I can’t say why it’s gone this far
I can’t say why I wasn’t lifted up
I can’t say why it took me this long
But, I can say
That I’m back, Lord I’m back

(Verse 6)
I’m so sorry, God
I can’t believe what I have become
The things I’m thinking should never be things that a girl this young should think
I hope the only thing that matters to you now
Is that I’ve come back
You’ve lifted me up
Now I see how wrong I was to say, Lord

(Chorus)
I couldn’t get out
Couldn’t get out without You
I couldn’t get out
Couldn’t get out without You
I thought I loved You
Thought I loved You
But I guess that was wrong

(Bridge)
It wasn’t supposed to be this way with me
I was supposed to be the example
What has happened to me, God?
Oh, God, I still can’t believe the things I’ve done

(Verse 5)
I can’t say why I never saw it
I can’t say why it’s gone this far
I can’t say why I wasn’t lifted up
I can’t say why it took me this long
But, I can say
That I’m back, Lord I’m back

(Verse 6)
I’m so sorry, God
I can’t believe what I have become
The things I’m thinking should never be things that a girl this young should think
I hope the only thing that matters to you now
Is that I’ve come back
You’ve lifted me up
Now I see how wrong I was to say, Lord

(Chorus)
I couldn’t get out (And it was all because)
Couldn’t get out without You (of my own doing, I brought this on myself)
I couldn’t get out (And it was all because)
Couldn’t get out without You (I let the world drive me instead of God)
I thought I loved You (I fell)
Thought I loved You (I fell)
But I guess that was wrong

(music dramatically stops)

(Bridge)
It wasn’t supposed to be this way with me
I was supposed to be the example
What has happened to me, God?
Oh, God, I still can’t believe the things I’ve done

(Ending)
Cause I couldn’t get out without You
And now I can get out…with You

Notes:

*Sighs* Yeah, falling like that… not one of my finer moments. But writing this song. Absolutely.

Sorry this wasn’t fan-fiction. I’m going to continue Scenario 1: Won’t Admit it (Sickness), since this doesn't mean I don’t like that anymore. It just means that my priorities have changed a little. Hopefully you can help remind me to keep them changed.

God bless!!
