Emerald Necklace

Summary:

A wholesome oneshot inspired by Kanan's new unidolized birthday card from Sif2. Happy birthday Kanan!

Work Text:

The warm breeze blew gently through Kanan’s hair, the birds chirping above her. The smell of fresh flowers and small pastries and chai tea, courtesy of Dia, filled her nose. The sun shown gently down through the gaps in the gazebo’s roof, warming the top of Kanan’s head. Dia sat across from her, her long black hair shining brilliantly under the sun. She was glowing. Kanan watched closely as Dia picked up her tea cup, graciously taking a sip, her pinky ever so slightly extended. She's always been so refined and ladylike, the epitome of a young woman. It made Kanan smile subconsciously like a dork. Her girlfriend was so pretty.

It was Kanan’s birthday today, which is why she and Dia had gathered in the gazebo, and why it was such a special occasion. A small bouquet of flowers sat next to the pastries Kanan had been savoring, flowers of blue and green and purple wrapped delicately in a red sash. The flowers matched Kanan’s hair and eyes, and smelled heavenly. They had been a gift from Dia. Next to the bouquet sat a small light red box, with crimson ribbons tied nicely into a bow on top.

“Have you enjoyed your pastries, Kanan-san? I picked them out carefully just for you.” Dia exclaimed with a rather smug look, as if she was proud of herself. Kanan couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at her. She was so cute.

“Yes, Dia. I loved them, thanks. You know me well.” Kanan replied, resting her elbow on the table so she could rest her chin on her palm, staring at the black haired girl intently. “Macha pastries….like those aren't your favorites, right?”

Dia sat up quickly, her face changing to a panicked look. “W-well….I just wanted to show you how good they can be, that's all…” She turned her face away, pouting. Kanan chuckled again. She loved to tease her girlfriend. Her reactions were so cute and yet somehow relaxed, a difference from her usually refined attitude. She loved seeing Dia let loose around her.

“S-stop staring at me like a lovesick puppy.” Dia’s voice snapped Kanan out of her trance. Her voice was stern, but it couldn't hide the blush on her face.

“Okay, okay. You're just so pretty..” Kanan’s voice trailed off as she kept staring intently, observing every feature of her. Her long hair, her pretty emerald eyes, the cute little mole she picked at when she got nervous. Her pretty white sweater, and the way she had curled the ends of her hair today…

“Kan-an-san!” Dia was suddenly closer, flicking Kanan’s forehead. “Enough! Aren't you going to open the gift I got you?”

Kanan couldn't help but tease her. “The flowers? They smell good. “Where'd you get em?--”

“THE OTHER GIFT!”

“Ahaha, ohhhh right right. Why didn't you just say so?” Kanan stuck her tongue out, acting innocent. She carefully picked up the small box, shaking it lightly to try and hear what could possibly be inside. More matcha goods maybe? She untied the red ribbon that she could picture Dia tying so carefully. She lifted the cover. Inside the box was a silver necklace. It was shiny and brilliant. On the end of the chain was what looked like a flower, an emerald gem in the middle of it. It shone brilliantly under the sun's rays. Kanan stared at it silently, in awe.

“Oh, Dia…you got this for me..?” She carefully held up the end of the necklace. The emerald was a brilliant green. Just like Dia’s eyes. “It's so pretty…”

Dia smiled, placing her teacup down onto her plate. “I was hoping you’d like it. It reminded me of your color in Aqours. I couldn't ignore it when I saw it in the shop I was in.”

Kanan couldn't stop staring at it. A gift from Dia, one who's gem reminded her of the vast green stars in Dia's eyes…it was perfect. And so was she.

“Thanks, Dia. I love you.”
