A World Without Rules

Summary:

Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.

(It helps to see the humour in these things.)

Notes:

This story is my entry for day 1 of Tobirama Week 2024, for the prompts 'Identity' and 'Love'.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tobirama looks at their brothers, crouching over the seedlings in their little hydroponic pods, and smiles.

"Look at the leaves!" Anija is almost cooing, and his husband leans against him comfortably, still frailer than anyone would like. "So tiny!"

It's one of the ironies of life that Madara, undoubtedly the most powerful human in the Matrix, has taken so long to recover from being unplugged. No one is sure if it was the toll taken from the effort of waking everyone up, whatever the machines did when they were trying to hack his mind, or if he's simply less resilient than many, but it's only in the last month that he's been able to walk again.

They all know what that's like, the long painful journey to independence, and it's not as if the members of the Resistance haven't had their own adjustments to make.

Izuna and he used to spend most of their days in the Hiraishin, spying on the machines and looking for The One, or training for missions. They even invented their own ways to break the rules of the Matrix - Izuna developing the Sharingan as a method to slow time, and he the shunshin to speed his own movements. All of that effort, that training, those habits of thought, they're now useless, and it's rare for a day to go by when Tobirama doesn't instinctively reach for the abilities he no longer has.

No longer do they need to trawl the sewers of their ancestors, broadcasting their pirate signal and hacking into the Matrix, because the thing that they were searching for is here.

With them.

He reaches out, taking his lover's hand, and lets Izuna tug him over to their family.

Yes, they don't have to be stalwart members of the Resistance anymore. They can just be humans, living their lives and watering the plants that will feed their bodies, nourish their souls.

Love brought their families back to them, and Tobirama gives himself up to it with a willing heart.

This is their future.

It's a good one.

Notes:

On a completely different note, I set up a server on Discord for my writing and you can go poke me at Phlebas Writes.

Since I actually write directly onto the server, all the warnings for my stories apply to any content that may be found on there and I swear. Just FYI.

I'm also on Tumblr!
