HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY part 2~

title from "Oblivious" by Aztec Camera

Work Text:

“So, when are you and Spencer going to make it official?”

“Oh, no. We’re not—“

But then Damien thinks about it. He thinks about it in such a way that he forgets to finish his sentence and drifts into memory, multiples of them in a bullet point list that he goes through and identifies. The history of his and Spencer’s friendship.

Desk mates; or, their desks are right next to each other. The first few months of Damien and Spencer working side by side in the games pod had been a little awkward: Spencer prefers to work in deep, penetrating silence, and has a tendency to tune out the world a little too well when wearing headphones. Damien, in response, didn’t want to interrupt whatever was going on in Spencer’s world, and stayed just as silent. Said silence broke when Spencer one day asked for Damien’s opinion on a jump cut, and it had opened the dam Damien had been holding inside. More often than not, they still worked in silence, but Damien wasn’t afraid to speak to Spencer anymore.

Nerds; this is self explanatory. Honestly, the types of games he and Spencer play are completely different, but they have one thing in common: being opinionated about said games. They’ll spend hours on this, arguing and agreeing with every other sentence. Sometimes Damien thinks they’ll say shit just to get a rise out of the other and continue the cycle. Sometimes, eventually, their arguments will evolve into actual discussions of themes and motifs and executions. They’ll sit on opposite sides of Spencer’s couch facing each other and let hours pass by in conversation, more than Damien gives most people.

Sometimes, on those nights, Spencer will pull out one of his acoustic guitars and strum mindlessly to accompany a comfortable silence. The silences between Damien and Spencer have been comfortable for a while. Damien never feels like he has to speak unnecessarily, nor does he feel guilty for allowing the silence to permeate. Spencer doesn’t play guitar out of awkwardness—he does it, Damien realizes, because he feels safe in the creation. Damien, alongside this, does not feel pressure to hum along in harmony to Spencer’s playing—he does it because he feels safe in the collaboration.

Spencer will play a song that Damien recognizes; Damien will sing along. He apologizes for his voice, and Spencer reassures him that he sounds amazing.

Okay. Okay.

“Shit, maybe Spencer and I are dating.”

Shayne, who’s been waiting patiently while Damien went on this journey down memory lane, rolls his eyes. “Glad you finally caught up.”

Damien looks around frantically, half expecting Spencer to show up out of the blue, summoned by Damien’s realizations. “Do you think Spencer knows?”

“No, I think he’s equally as stupid, actually.” Shayne is smiling while he says this. “But why are you still talking to me about it? Go make this a reality or whatever.”

Damien is already sprinting down the hall. There’s already been enough time wasted.
