Work Text:
It was the night before Valentine’s Day, and Luz was pretty certain that she wouldn’t have a Valentine’s date this year once again. The fact didn’t bother her, in all honesty. All it did was give her an excuse to have a romcom movie marathon and eat too much candy.
That was until she got a call from one of her closest friends.
“Luz!” the voice on the other end of the line exclaims. Luz smiles and sits up, pausing her movie.
“Hey, Amity!” she replies just as enthusiastically. Her smile only grows. “What’s up?”
“Well tomorrow’s Valentine’s Day,” Amity starts. Luz hums. “And I was wondering if you wanted to go ice skating with me tomorrow?”
Luz freezes for a second. She does not do very well with crowded places and loud noises, and an ice skating rink on Valentine’s Day would be both those things and more.
Amity seems to have noticed her hesitation because she quickly clarifies, “It won’t be in public. My siblings used to take me to this secluded lake that freezes all the way to the bottom, so it’s very safe. Plus, no one knows where it is.”
“If it’s frozen all the way to the bottom, where are the animals and plants?” Luz asks. Amity laughs, which just makes Luz get butterflies.
“Teleported,” she explains simply. Because that makes sense.
“I see,” Luz replies. She does not see.
“So I’ll pick you up tomorrow?” Amity suggests. Luz nods before remembering she can’t see her.
“Sounds great!” she answers. They say quick goodbyes before they hang up.
Luz squeals and starts kicking her legs aggressively. She was going to go ice skating with her crush! Sure, it wasn’t a date, but she was still going to be spending her Valentine’s Day with her crush.
That night, she feels like she can barely sleep out of pure excitement. She’s been wanting to do something with Amity for so long now, but she was far too scared to ever actually ask her.
Still, she’s somehow able to get a few hours of sleep. When she wakes up around nine, she feels shockingly rested, something she hasn’t felt in years.
Luz is so excited that she actually feels nauseous. Or maybe she feels that way because she hasn’t eaten breakfast.
“Luz!” Eda calls from the kitchen. Luz practically floats down the stairs, happier than ever. “Oh, someone’s happy.”
“I’m going ice skating with Amity today,” she replies happily as she sits down at the table. Eda just chuckles and places a plate of pancakes in front of her.
“Have fun, lovebirds,” Eda says with a smirk before walking out of the kitchen and heading back to her office. Luz tries to protest that this wasn’t a date (because there’s no way Amity sees her like that), but all her words just fail her.
She ends up just eating her pancakes in silence, cheeks and ears burning red from what is probably embarrassment.
Half an hour later, someone knocks on the front door before opening it. That was Amity’s code for letting them know she was here. She made it up when she first met Luz and they first became close.
“Hey!” Luz greets as she puts her plate back in the cabinet. “Are we leaving now?”
“Maybe get into something a bit warmer than that,” Amity teases, laughing quietly behind her hand. Luz looks down and realizes she’s wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
“Let me go get changed,” she says, cheeks flushing bright red. “Eda’s in her office, and King’s at daycare.”
“Be fast, sweetheart,” Amity calls after her as she runs upstairs. Luz’s cheeks just burn brighter.
She pulls on a purple knitted sweater her aunt made for her along with simple black leggings. After a moment of debate, she pulls on tall socks so she won’t get blisters from the skates. Once she gets her sneakers on, she runs back downstairs.
“I’m ready!” she announces. Amity and Eda are sat laughing on the couch with Eda holding a mug of coffee. Instantly, Amity looks up at Luz and smiles.
“You look gorgeous,” she compliments. Luz’s cheeks turn red once again, and Eda tries (and fails) to contain a snort. “Anyway, are you ready?”
Luz nods and waves goodbye to Eda, who waves back and wiggles her eyebrows at her. She rolls her eyes and leaves, locking the door behind her.
“I love your outfit,” Luz says as they walk towards Amity’s car. She was wearing a plum sweater with a cat on it tucked into high waisted jeans.
“Thanks!” Amity replies cheerfully. “I picked it out just for you.”
For the millionth time today, Luz’s cheeks flush bright red. She doesn’t say anything as she climbs into the passenger seat.
“I brought you some good skates,” Amity tells her after a few minutes of comfortable silence. “They’re my old figure skating skates, but they’re better than those rentals that you get at the rink.”
“Thank you,” Luz replies quietly. “I’ve never been ice skating before.”
“Don’t worry, you have me,” Amity says, glancing over to Luz to flash her a toothy grin. “I’ve been skating since I could walk, so you could say I’m half decent.”
“Only half decent?” Luz asks with a laugh. Amity laughs with her, leaning her head slightly forward before sitting back up since she was driving.
“I don’t like to brag,” she explains. She smiles brightly, and Luz swears she could get lost in those yellow eyes. “But I feel like no matter what I say, it’ll be bragging.”
“It’s not like you got gold at the Olympics or anything,” Luz jokes. She expects Amity to deny it, but the purple haired girl stays silent. Amity’s clearly trying not to laugh, but she’s failing miserably.
“Well,” she starts. Luz gasps and whips herself around so she’s facing Amity.
“You won gold at the Olympics and never thought to say anything?” she shouts in complete astonishment. Amity just laughs and leans away a little.
“I truly don’t know how,” she admits. “I’ve watched that routine back over and over again, and I see so many flaws and mistakes. Maybe it’s my mother infecting my brain, but I honestly don’t think that I should’ve won gold. Boscha, the girl who won silver, deserved it more.”
Luz gently slaps Amity’s shoulder, making her jump slightly before laughing a little. She looks at Luz before realizing the pure hurt and slight anger in her eyes.
“Don’t say that!” Luz scolds. “You absolutely deserved that gold. Don’t let anyone else believe that. If your mother is saying anything mean, let me know, and I’ll take care of her.”
“Are you threatening her?” Amity jokes. Luz simply leans back in the chair and crosses her arms.
“Legally? No,” she answers. “Otherwise, yes.”
Amity laughs and stops the car. Luz looks around, not having realized that they were so close to the area they were skating at.
Suddenly, she’s very nervous. Everything around her spins for a second as she climbs out of the car. She’s never been ice skating before, having only seen snow for the first time three years ago when she moved here, so needless to say, she was terrified.
“You okay?” Amity asks as she pulls two pairs of skates out of her back seat. Luz gulps thickly and nods, completely lying.
“Can you help me put on my skates?” Luz sheepishly requests. Amity nods easily, leading Luz to a rock near the ice so she could sit down.
“Take off your shoes and put the skates on. I’ll tie them for you,” Amity tells her. Luz unties her sneakers and kicks them off easily. One lands on the ice, making them both laugh.
Once Luz gets her skates on and Amity ties them, Amity quickly pulls hers on. She does it much faster than Luz realized was possible. For a second, she just stares in awe until Amity stands up and holds out her hands out.
When Luz stares at them in vague confusion, Amity explains, “Hold them. It’s so you won’t bust your ass the second you get on the ice.”
“Oh,” she whispers, cheeks once again burning. She grabs Amity’s hands, and they waddle to the ice.
Surprisingly, Luz is able to stand on the ice pretty easily. When she looks up at Amity, her cheeks are also red, but Luz blames that on the biting cold. Amity is skating backwards slowly, pulling Luz forward.
“You’re doing so well!” Amity exclaims. Luz’s legs are shaking, and she’s tightly gripping Amity’s hands.
“You’re doing all the work,” Luz counters, glancing down at her shaking legs. “Are they meant to shake this much?”
Amity laughs, and Luz swears she could get lost in the sound. “Yes, darling, that happens to first time skaters all the time,” she replies. Luz’s cheeks burn brighter at the nickname. Luckily, the cold should be hiding the fact that she’s blushing.
“What if you let go and show me tricks?” Luz suggests a few minutes later. They’ve been skating slowly around the pond with Amity speeding up a little every minute or so. “I think I’m okay by myself.”
“If you truly think so,” Amity says with a shrug. She slowly lets go of Luz’s hands, still holding her arms out in case Luz suddenly falls over.
Luz shocks them both when she’s able to stand and even skate a little without Amity’s help. Sure, she almost falls, but Amity is there to catch her.
“Are you ready?” Amity asks. Luz nods eagerly, mostly focusing on standing up straight.
Amity speeds off before launching herself in the air, spinning so many times that Luz can’t even count them, before landing on one foot. In a second, Luz is cheering and shouting and clapping. Amity’s face turns red as she smiles breathlessly and bows, but Luz blames the redness on the wind.
“That was so cool!” Luz shouts. She tries to skate over to Amity, but she skates over a patch of thin snow.
The sudden texture change startles her, and she jerks forward, waving her arms around her wildly as she tries to regain her balance. In a second, Amity is racing over to her before she catches her.
Luz stays there for a second, breathing heavily and squeezing her arms around Amity’s middle. Amity pulls her up so she’s standing again before briefly checking over her for injuries.
“Are you okay?” Amity begins to ask, but Luz cuts her off by laughing breathlessly.
“That was hilarious! I’m so clumsy,” she laughs. She leans over and wraps her arms around herself, laughing harder. Once Amity knows she’s okay, she laughs with her.
“That’s why you’re so cute,” Amity tells her. She’s still breathing heavily from how hard she was laughing, and Luz can see the air her breath makes.
“You think I’m cute?” she asks. Amity laughs and tucks a piece of Luz’s hair behind her hair.
“Well, yeah,” Amity replies. Her cheeks and ears turn bright red, and for once, Luz considers that maybe it isn’t from the cold. “Why else would I invite you to skate with me?”
“I don’t know,” Luz admits, burying her face in her hands to cover the blushing.
Amity is about to answer when her phone reads. She answers and begins speaking in a language Luz still doesn’t know, so she knows that it’s her mother. Internally she groans, knowing that their little outing was about to end far too early.
“Sorry, that was my mom,” Amity explains with a sigh.
“I know,” Luz replies.
“We have to go.”
“I know.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“I know.”
“I really didn’t want this to end so early, and I completely understand if you’re mad at me-.”
Amity continues rambling on and on, and Luz just rolls her eyes before grabbing the back of Amity’s head and pulling her in for a kiss. That shuts her up real fast.
“Sorry,” Luz whispers after she pulls away. “I didn’t know how else to make you be quiet.”
“Wait, you like me?” Amity manages to get out. Luz stares at her.
“No, I just kissed you for no reason,” Luz replies sarcastically. Amity just blinks at her, so Luz clarifies, “Yes, I like you, you stupid bitch.”
Amity laughs, face still bright red. Luz just shakes her head.
“Let’s get home before your mom kills me,” she says. Amity nods in agreement, still stunned.
To be honest, Luz is completely in shock herself. She was never one to be bold, but it was clear Amity wasn’t going to be the one to make the first move.
They climb into the car, and they hold hands the entire ride to Luz’s house. Before Luz gets out, she kisses Amity on the cheek, making both of them blush.
“How was your date?” Eda teases the second she walks in. Luz’s cheeks are still red, and she just rolls her eyes.
“It was fun,” Luz admits quietly after a second. She sits down on the couch next to her mom.
“So it’s official?” Eda asks, leaning into Luz. She laughs and nods.
“Yes, Mom, it’s official,” she says through slight laughter. Eda cheers, and Luz says, mostly to herself, “Amity is my girlfriend.”
