"denki, how did you even do that?!" izuku laughed, sticking a small pikachu bandaid on denki's knee before giving it a quick slap.
denki yelped, "what the hell, izuku?!" he began kicking at izuku.
hence the start of the two play fighting, laughter filling izuku's messy room.
their day went well, the sun setting slowly on the mid-september day.
what lead up to this point? well, both of the boys had decided to make a 'before we go back to school list' on impulse the day before the first day.
the two spent this whole day making soda rockets, stealing shopping carts to race in, mixing baking soda into ketchup bottles, and letting them explode at each other.
fun, right?
minutes before izuku was fighting for his life after slapping denki's sensitive knee scrape, they were riding their old bikes down a steep sidewalk and denki somehow flew off, landing on his knee and scraping it raw.
and now, the electric blond had izuku in a tight headlock, plucking his freckled forehead until it turned red.
"ow, ow! i'm sorry you baby!" the green-haired teen whined, preparing to blow a raspberry.
denki knew what was coming, he quickly released izuku, rolling off of him as he heard the raspberry.
"hah! you missed, looossseerrr!" denki teased, tossing a random paper ball that was on izuku's messy floor.
izuku was just about to throw it back before his door was quickly opened.
"izuku, please clean your room—!" inko had opened the door wide, appalled by the state of izuku's cluttered bedroom floor.
clothes, pencils, and paper airplanes were scattered across the floor. she couldn't understand how the green-haired boy could live in such a messy room.
"oh, hi sweetie. mind helping my messy son?" inko greeted denki, her question a joke.
denki giggled, those dark green braces showing.
he'd gotten the braces when he was a third year in middle school. for most of his life, he had an overbite and gapped teeth. the canary blond didn't want the mental in his mouth at first, worried that others would pick on him. though, his teeth were also one of his biggest insecurities.
though, once izuku reassured him that everything would be okay, he'd gotten them. he made sure the bands were green to remind him of how izuku was the reason he'd gone through with it and hasn't changed the color since.
—
the boys met each other on a warm summer day during their second year of middle school.
"hey, you, the kid with the broccoli lookin' hair!" denki called to the green-haired boy with glasses.
"h-huh?! i don't have broccoli hair!" izuku replied, his voice cracking. it was shaky.
"mhm, and i don't have an otterbite. totally." denki snorted sarcastically, sitting down next to izuku on the rusty bleachers.
it was free time and izuku would always sit on the squeaky metal bleachers alone.
denki noticed the boy was been sitting alone during this time. izuku would always be clutching his bag as he wrote in his small notepad. something urged him to talk to the greenie, he didn't like seeing izuku all alone. he would always frown at the sight. though on this particular day, he gathered the courage to walk up and speak to the greenie.
"do you mean 'overbite'? i didn't even notice until you pointed it out!" izuku said, laughing softly as he pushed his glasses back up properly.
"oh potato, potato." denki rolled his eyes.
"but that's a first.. all of the other kids noticed it as soon as i talked to them. they made a lot of fun of me because of it. but, i don't care!" denki said before smiling with his mouth closed to hide his teeth. it was so obvious that he did care.
"what?! that's so mean! i would kick their asses if i weren't weak." izuku said, blushing softly as he swore, knowing his mother would scold him if she found out. but, he was at school now, away from her. why should he care?
denki squinted his eyes before looking the wobbly greenette up and down before sucking his teeth. "weak? since when has that mattered?! i think you're the coolest kid i've met all year."
"i like you. so hi, i'm denki."
izuku's poor heart fluttered at those words. he couldn't forget them, even as denki proceeded to tell him a story of his terrifying experience with his pet hamster.
"i like you." had been the only thing that rang in his ears for the entire day. he continued to look at the canary blond as if he hung the moon and stars in the sky.
hence the start of his middle school puppy crush. izuku adored denki throughout middle school, whether it be admiring him from afar or looking at denki with total heart eyes while they talked.
though, it was only a puppy crush. a phase. once high school started, he could only laugh at his past self for falling that easily.
denki was his best friend since that very moment, he couldn't possibly like him! izuku though of it as a funny secret he hoped to tell the blond one day.
—
"why do you make so many paper airplanes?" denki asked, his eyebrows quirked with confusion.
"i dunno, i do it when i'm bored or have no one to text. as you can see, it's the case a lot of the time." izuku replied, holding up the half-full bag of paper, his mom wanted him to recycle it since he'd wasted so much.
denki only scoffed, he didn't believe that izuku was this bored. everyone around him loved him and gave him attention. how could he be alone this much?
they continued cleaning together, eventually having another play fight, tossing paper back and forth. they laughed loudly, only to be interrupted by inko once again.
they both apologized, finishing before they came downstairs to eat dinner.
afterwards, izuku waved denki bye as he rode his bike down the street to his own house. the canary blond boy had to go home early since the first day of school was the next day.
izuku hopped into the shower before brushing his teeth, setting his alarm, and laying down to sleep.
tomorrow was going to be a great first day of school, he knew it.
especially with his best friend denki right beside him.
