Work Text:

It’s only natural for her to be this way, isn’t it?

She’s more beautiful and more talented than her worthless older sister.

It’s only natural.

Mother is the one Father loves. Kaya is the proper daughter. Miyo is simply… Miyo.

Good for nothing Miyo.

“You must never be like that thing, Kaya,” Mother says, gripping her hand tightly. “She’s beneath you.”

Kaya stares at her sister. Her sister doesn’t stare back. She keeps her shoulders hunched and her hands clasped and her eyes on the ground.

And Kaya thinks, I’m better than that.

It’s only natural, after all.

When her spirit sight develops and she begins seeing those nasty creatures, it’s only natural that she be the one her parents are proud of. It doesn’t matter that grotesqueries are hideous, that she’d be much happier off if she didn’t have to know they existed.

Kaya buries those feelings under the knowledge that she’s superior. She’s the one with the gift, not Miyo.

She’s the one her parents love.

Her world makes sense to her until the day her father hands Miyo off to the Kudou family. It doesn’t bother her.

Not at first.

She’s heard the rumors. Kudou Kiyoka is said to be a callous and cruel man. The chances are, Miyo will be dead within the week and she’ll be the one married into the Tatsuishi family. It doesn’t matter that she’s always known Kouji has loved Miyo best.

(It does matter. She’s the better option, so why should he love Miyo more?)

That changes when she realizes Miyo hasn’t been thrown to the curb. (Why does she get to be happy?)

That changes when she sees Kudou Kiyoka for the first time. (He’s so beautiful- the most beautiful man she’s ever seen.)

And she realizes… she wants what her sister has.

It’s only natural, after all.

She’s the better one.
