Work Text:

“So Percy,” Grog began with a wink and a nudge. “Any thoughts about the. Big. Day?” You didn’t need an Intelligence of 6 to know that Percy and Vex were thinking about getting married, and probably sooner rather than later...

Percy had, in fact - it wasn’t every day one’s girlfriend turned thirty, and it had been a while since they’d traveled for pleasure, rather than planet-saving. “I hear Dalen’s Closet is lovely in the early summer; I thought we might celebrate there.”

Grog let out a gasp of delight! “Are we invited? I mean,” he drew himself up to his full height and adopted the proper tone of a Grand Poobah discussing the wedding of his fellow nobles. “One does not like to presume.”

Percy smiled, and modulated his mannerisms to match. “I must say we have not sent out the formal invitations as of yet, but you shall certainly be receiving one - as will you all, of course.” He gestured to his other friends around the dinner table. Vex had gone to put Vesper to bed for the night, but otherwise the surviving members of Vox Machina had all gathered for dinner.

“I could make the invitations for you,” Keyleth offered. “I know how much work goes into planning a big event.”

Percy nodded in thanks and commiseration; they were both heads of city-states, with all the bureaucracy that entailed. “A very generous offer; thank you, Keyleth.”

“And we’ll handle the cake, of course,” Pike added.

“And have you thought about a dress?” Taryon chimed in. “Or a ring?”

“Not yet,” Percy replied, mentally adding those to a list of possible gifts. “But there’s still plenty of time to pick something out.”

“Well, we’ll see you in Dalen’s Closet in, what, four months?” Scanlan asked. Percy nodded. “I’ll write a little something for the occasion,” he promised with a wink.

Two weeks later…

Vex’ahlia inhaled, enjoying the quiet bustle that marked the prelude to a meeting of the Council of Tal’Dorei (not least because it gave her an excuse to leave Vesper with Percival; between the exhaustion of looking after a newborn and the typical fare of a council meeting, Vex found she always slept quite well during her trips to Emon). Her head tilted to one side as Allura approached her. Something the arcanist wanted to raise privately with her, before the formal meeting? Curious.

“Lady Allura, what can I do for you?” she began, gesturing her friend into a slight recess in the meeting chamber.

“I just wanted to congratulate you and Percy - quietly, of course. Keyleth gave me a draft wedding invitation, just to see what I thought, but they haven’t formally been delivered yet.” The other woman flashed the ornately inked parchment.

“Oh, thank you, Allura!” Hmm, Vex thought. Percy did say he was thinking about taking me to Dalen’s Closet for my birthday. We’d certainly talked about getting married, but never anything definite. That sly bastard, trying to surprise me with a wedding! Well, I won’t let on, and he’ll see how surprised I can act. Maybe I’ll even throw in a few surprises of my own… And from there they fell to gossiping until the council was called to order.

Two weeks after that…

Refreshed and rested, Vex strode back into Whitestone Castle, looking for her fiancé. She liked the sound of that. Shame she’d have to keep it under wraps for another few months, she thought.

“Vex’ahlia, dearest,” Percy greeted her, an uncomfortable, strained look on his face. “Were you aware our friends are trying to marry us off? Not that I’m opposed, mind you,” he added quickly. “It’s just, well, I thought we’d have more say in the matter.”

Vex blinked. “So you aren’t trying to throw me a surprise wedding?”

“I was trying to throw you a birthday party!” Percy threw up his hands in exasperation. “But somewhere along the line, they decided that it was a wedding instead, apparently!”

“Hm.” Vex considered all this for a moment, then said, “you know, you really won’t have any excuse for forgetting our anniversary this way.” They shared a brief snort of laughter before she continued. “Besides, I hear Dalen’s Closet is beautiful in the early summer.”

Notes:

Per the Critical Role wiki, Vex is only 29 at the time of her wedding, but the fic made more sense if she was just a few months older, so here we are.
