Chapter 1: Bad Luck Is My Middle Name

Chapter Text

Jason Grace- Was an extraordinary young man with extraordinarily bad luck.

He did not have a good life. On paper maybe, he was a certified genius, had two parents, and had a good relationship with his older sister Thalia.

But the reality was while he was a genius, he had no friends and hated school because of it. The pressure his mom put on his shoulders to be perfect and deserving of her love just because he was smart. His parents could not be in the same room together for a minute before they fought. His sister was the only one, he could rely on.

Then his dad left and took Thaila with him to New York. Never to be seen again.

His mom started to drink, and he started to fail school.

Gifted-kid burnout they called it. Like it was his fault he burned out?

Life was pointless without school, family…friends, not that he ever had any.

That’s why when he saw the headlights of a semi come at them at full speed, he was happy and accepting of the inevitably painful death to come. He was ready to die and get it all over with.

But he didn’t die, his mom did.

The only evidence of the reck was a scratch going down Jason's lip with a single stitch to it. That and the heavy pain he carried on his chest from the loss of his mother, the memory of her scream, the sound of the metal scraping and the glass shattering onto them.

She died on impact the paramedics told him, but he knew that was a lie. She had been talking, told him sorry for everything and that all would be alright as long as he looked forward to the future, just be happy she told him.

The car had been toddled nothing left but a crushed can the size of a car. It was amazing that he had survived and with nothing but a tiny starch across his lip they all told him, the nurses whispering in the hall pointing at him. ‘Look at him he must be the luckiest person in the world’ they all said.

But Jason didn’t feel that way, he wanted to die, even more so now. What bad luck he had.

After the hospital, a police officer drove him to his house to grab a bag with some clothes and toiletries. He was going to stay with a foster family nearby.

So, there he was standing on the front porch of a run-down house, a bag of all his belongings slung across his shoulder. He could hear the sound of kids screaming on the inside and some type of music playing… Elvis maybe? It muffled through the door.

“Are you not going to ring the bell?” The police officer asked.

“Umm… Sure?” Jason nodded then rang the bell before he could chicken out, though he knew if he did there was nowhere to go.

The door began to open slowly, and a small boy popped his head out before shouting back into the house. “Mama Jo! There’s a new one!”
Then the boy bounced outside and put up his hand for Jason to shake. “Hi, I'm Harly! It's nice to meet you new bother!”

Jason didn’t like that new bother? He wasn’t going to be here long, and he knew it. But even then, the kid was cute, Jason could give him that, so he reluctantly shook his hand and watched him swap places with a much older woman.

“Hi Jo, good to see you again.” Said Officer Garry. Jason thought the name tag said.

“Hi Officer Gray, got another on for me, do you?” she asked looking Jason up and down, he quivered under her intense stare analyzing him, before she relaxed a little.

Officer Gray handed over Jason’s chart to Jo. Was her name Jo? He wasn’t sure he had always been bad with names. But he watched as her eyes widened the grew something along the lines of warmth as she read his chart.

“I'll take it from here officer.” She nodded her head and then made a motion to encourage Jason to follow her into the house. “Come with me, sweet child.” She whispered as he went through the door.
