Intruder alert, intruder–! Alert..?

Summary:

CatNap woke up from their nap, dazed as always wondering why their body is in pain– someone next to them ended up in their bed, how did they get there without permission let alone the scientists approving them?!

... Turns out it was just their friend, DogDay. No sign of intruders here.

Work Text:

Waking up the worst way possible, eyelids heavy and body in a huge amount of pain. Their body ached and they stared up at the ceiling, forgetting about the glow in the dark stars the kids put for them there.

Groggily blinking, feeling as if they woke up from a marathon despite not even doing much yesterday, they were about to fall back asleep at any given moment.

They weren't even human exactly to begin with, what was making their head pound so horribly and the ringing in their ears?

CatNap turned their head to the alarm clock next to them on their night stand, finding out it had only been a quarter to midnight. Normally they always sleep this heavy, of course, but they couldn't shake off the groggy feeling they had.

Sighing, about to head back to sleep given the time, when they realized they were in fact... not alone in their comfort of their own bed.

Eyes widening, then squinting, trying to figure out who they were. Could it be a child? No, it's too late past this hour. Plus, they would've knocked– CatNap's children of their den knew not to disturb them when their door was closed to their room.

...An intruder? It couldn't be. The scientists and doctors were very careful on who they let in.

But... based off of what CatNap knew, technically anything was possible.

If that were the case, then–

The lunar cat moved in an instant, ripping the blanket off the intruder and placing themselves on top of them, their paws squishing the intruders face harshly.

Despite CatNap having night vision, they only used it at very important times. Tonight however, they could scratch out the intruder's eyeballs: no need for their night vision to be used at such a useless time!

The person below them squirmed, their target had been acquired. Squishing their face harder, lifting another paw in the air, ready to scratch them all out! The scientists should donate their body for more harsher experiments, they broke into CatNap's room, it was unbelievable–

"CatNap!" The intruder yelled, attempting to stay quiet.

That didn't slide with CatNap, "you can't fool me, I know what you are and what you're doing... You only know my name because the cartoon and factory tours."

"C-Catnap, really, it's me–" he opened his eyes, a flashing yellow and white, small irises that represented the sun rays.

Oh, that... right.

The two locked eyes, the cat with moon irises stared down the dog with sun irises, eye contact without a single blink.

CatNap grew insanely embarrassed, realizing they were about to kill their friend right then and there.

DogDay's eyes were wide, confused about how he should be feeling personally right now. Those emotions can be unpacked much later–

Immediately letting go of their absolute monster grip on DogDay's face, cupping their hands around him instead.

"DogDay, you should've said something." CatNap's eyebrows went back down, their ears going back to their natural state, as they felt high alert.

DogDay blinked, "h-how am I supposed to say something if you're asleep? Didn't wanna wake you up, that'd be rude of me..." the puppy eyes were back, resulting in CatNap squeezing his face and then letting out a small whine from the suddenness.

"Plus, you're like... a cat, and all." His eyes darting to the other side of the room, internally apologizing for his terrible lack of eye contact skills, "I just thought you would've seen me, your eyesight is way better compared to mine..!" Dragging the "y" in "way," CatNap sighing a third time from how stupid this puppy was.

"Hey, don't ignore me!" DogDay pouted, with a relieved lunar cat on top of them, forgetting they were still there.

CatNap let out a small laugh, "I'm not ignoring you on purpose, doggy..." taking a deep inhale and exhaling through their mouth, "you almost scared me into a panic attack, is all, just trying to calm down to prevent having one."

DogDay's expression melted, he felt extremely horrible for scaring his best friend just like that. What an awful person he was, no good for nothing, anything–

CatNap squished his face between their paws again, messing with the fur and beginning to cheer up the slightest bit.

...Okay, maybe DogDay wasn't a failure after all. He could be good for one thing, and that's making their best friend laugh. Though it was only from his fur and 'level of squishiness' as CatNap referred to him with.

"If you let me play with you for a little while, I can get back up on my tail and be fine to sleep again soon." CatNap stated rather than making it as a demand, DogDay nodding along: as long as he could be near the lunar cat, he didn't mind whatever.

The guilt and embarrassment boiled up in the two of them, but after a little while it slowly went away. Mainly for CatNap, DogDay still felt worrisome if they would suddenly collapse at any given moment–

Realistically that would've just been DogDay, the way that CatNap clawed gently at his face and smiled sweetly at the dog they sat in front of.

...

Perhaps there truly wasn't anything to worry about, he's overthinking again. Always make sure to make note that you're there when sleeping next to CatNap, he pondered to himself.

His tail thumped on the bed, closing his eyes to try preventing the wagging. It didn't work, obviously, he just thought closing his eyes would work away the embarrassment– it also, in fact, did not do the expected result either.

It only made CatNap swoon more for him, moving their paws under his chin and scratching.

DogDay leaned into the touch, his posture almost turning into a state of a shrimp's, placing and cupping his paws on his knees: hoping not to fall over on top of CatNap. If he made any more mistakes tonight, he would explode on spot in an instant. DogDay's just trying his best not to burst into emotion, especially since it had been around midnight.

Where, uh, you know... everyone is and was supposed to be asleep. Yeah, that didn't quite exactly work for CatNap, but DogDay was willing to stay up more for personal time with his best friend whom he cherished most.

"It's really cute whenever you close your eyes, whenever someone pets you." CatNap muttered, DogDay feeling like a puddle from how much he felt like he was genuinely melting into the warm touch of the lunar cat rarely anyone else experiences.

They giggled, "and you're doing it still, stealing people's hearts. A sunny leader I'd never expect to turn out like such a puppy."

"D-Daww, well, ya know– it's not so easy being the sunshine of the teacher crew, aha–"

DogDay had continued making up his nonsense and other filler sentences, a thing he did when he was embarrassed.

...A thing he does because he cannot accept simple compliments, either!

CatNap listened and listened, smiling sweetly despite DogDay not seeing how long they continued to smile for.

They didn't care if he saw what they did or not, they just deeply admired and appreciated how wonderful their best friend really was... a bundle of both anxiety and joy combined.
