the almost destruction of romanticism

Summary:

a metaphor for love

-

"But then it is not Perfect. It does not feel sublime, like god’s doing. It does not feel the way it is supposed to. Like the usual. Because Sage is half-dead and it is entirely Reyna’s fault. With her selfish abilities, her confident solo prowl, she had left her lover behind in the literal dust and charged forward, guns blazing and eyes blinding."

Work Text:

It’s almost considered romantic, really. The way Reyna holds her tightly and the way Reyna makes full effort to show her love for her darling Sage. The way her light kisses and soothing voice makes all of Sage’s concerns and worries melt away like an ice cube in the scorching sun. It’s especially comforting in times like these. You know, when Sage experiences one of her (rare but often) moments of vulnerability and weakness, where her hurt and feelings bubble and surface beneath her resilient and unscathed demeanor. When Reyna— even before they were dating— was there to offer slight support. Now, she is almost always there.

“There’s just so much,” Sage sobs wretchedly. It breaks Reyna’s heart, the way she cries and wails and clings to Reyna’s arm for any sense of physical comfort.

“Cry a little less louder, sí? I don’t want to force someone out of their reverie and assume we are doing otherwise,” Reyna tries to joke. It backfires pathetically, and she regrets it almost instantly.

“I can’t, Reyna. I really really can’t anymore. I can’t do anything, I can’t—”

Reyna quickly realises her mistake and swallows the guilt in her throat, embracing her lover while somewhere in the back of her mind hitting herself for not remembering that jokes really do not help in situations like these when it comes to the emotionally sensitive Sage.

“I apologise, mi amor. Cry into my shoulder.”

Sage does. Her heavenly voice breaks into a million pieces and it immediately shatters Reyna’s fucking heart. It is always her that struggles to see her loved ones suffer. Reyna’s arm wraps around Sage’s waist and she squeezes the shorter woman gently, burying her face in the soft, black silk referred to as a head of hair, and kisses the top of Sage’s head as an affectionate form of comfort.

It makes Sage cry more.

“I love you so much, Reyna. What did I do to deserve someone as perfect as you? I love you so, so much—,” Reyna shushes her with a sweet peck on the lips.

Why must it hurt Reyna so when her darling corazón has glistening tears streaming down her perfect, pretty face?

Later, when Sage is all burnt out and exhausted from the sobs that wreaked her tired figure, Reyna strokes her lover’s smooth, black hair and tucks it behind her ear, all while admiring the angel resting her head on Reyna’s lap. Even when she’s at her lowest, she still looks her best— Reyna acknowledges that greatly. A quiet mumble startles Reyna.

“Reyna? Are you awake?” An almost silent whisper falling from an angel’s soft lips.

“Yes, querida. What do you need?” Reyna responds, in about the same tone.

“You’re lovely, really. I adore you.”

“Not as much as I, to you.”

Reyna thinks she is speaking the truth. Sage was, is, Reyna’s perfect descendant from the sky. She is so lovestruck and so smitten by this woman’s very existence. From their very first meeting, Reyna could feel her heart, soul, and being absolutely soften from the sound of Sage’s addictive voice dripped with sweetened honey. From day one she had become more and more so the definition of an obsessive teenager. She really tries hard not to show her darker, toxic behaviours of possession and keeping. Is it her fault though? When one takes a glance at Sage, Reyna is sure they would think the same.

Their hands are linked. Reyna has been too lost in her thoughts to even realise Sage’s concerned stare and worried hands linking together, tightly, perfectly.

“Is something wrong?” Sage whispers, eyelids fluttering beautifully.

“Of course not.”

Reyna offers a small smile, carding her free fingers through that dreamy hair she oh so adores. Quiet ‘I love you’s’ are exchanged. It feels Perfect.

But then it is not Perfect. It does not feel sublime, like god’s doing. It does not feel the way it is supposed to. Like the usual. Because Sage is half-dead and it is entirely Reyna’s fault. With her selfish abilities, her confident solo prowl, she had left her lover behind in the literal dust and charged forward, guns blazing and eyes blinding. This is her second biggest regret. Reyna’s first, is ignoring Sage’s cries for her to come back, please control yourself, Reyna, we need to stay together. If only she had listened, then she would not have lost sight of Sage and discovered her lying in a ditch with twelve broken bones and a heart full of hurt. Hurt. Reyna hurt the angel that lifted her all the way up, up, up.

The heart monitor is the only noise between Reyna’s worried breathing and Sage’s soft pants. She is connected to wires and wires and wires. The room is all white. Sage’s bed is white. Her bandages are, too, aside from the occasional splotch of blood that is an incredibly dark contrast to the rest of the atmosphere. It freaks Reyna the fuck out, honestly. She can’t bear seeing blood anywhere near Sage, or from her own self. The beeping of the heart monitor intensifies ever-so-slightly, startling Reyna and causing her to lift her eyes from the white, marble floor and stare.

Sage is barely awake. Her eyelids flutter, this time, not so beautifully. It looks painful, like she is suffering. Which she is, physically, in a sense.

“Reyna,” Sage mumbles, her letters slurring together.

“Sí, amor?”

“It is not your fault.”

Reyna wants to die. She actually wants to punish herself so hard right now. Her Sage is exhausted, bedridden, covered in bandages from head to toe and barely managing the energy to speak to Reyna— energy, which Reyna thinks, should be spent on regaining enough stamina to heal herself slightly.

“It is my fault. I have failed you,” Reyna finally responds, eyes dropping (out of respect) and hanging her head lower, “It will not happen again.”

“Don’t worry. I’m alive, aren’t I?”

There it is. That cheeky glint of mischief that aims to uplift everyone’s spirits. Sage is still Sage.

Everything is back to normal again. Sage is piled with work and work and work, while all Reyna does is train and train and train. They are two sides of the same spectrum, however, in the comfortable atmosphere of Sage’s peaceful, calm bedroom, they can finally spend time together. Still, Reyna loves Sage and Sage loves Reyna.
