Work Text:
She is bored of a life just not meant for her. She’s struggling with unmet needs, desires, troubles. She makes a rash decision, or 12. She goes along with it because she has long since made the decisions.
She is a quiet child. She waits patiently for someone to adopt her, keep her. Her real parents have visitation rights, but they can’t afford having her any longer. Unfit environments, unfit parenting- financial isn’t a worry. She doesn’t blame them. Her hurt and hard feelings grow later.
She gets through school with good grades. Stellar grades. She enrolls herself in law school, gets a scholarship, everything. She’s still a few thousand dollars in debt to this day.
She’s okay at what she does. Her passion fades quick. It’s boring, lifeless. She needs change.
She abandons her life. She takes a bus from her city to Florida. She has no experience with wrestling- does the singular fight that her principal wiped from her records count? She hopes not, that was embarrassing.
She’s signed on with FWF- the Floridian Wrestling Foundation- it’s well esteemed in the state of Florida. It’s hardly known outside of it, unless you’re in the scene. The Convict is what they call her. It’s cheesy, laughable. But it’s a change she feels is required. She grapples onto her new identity. She’s not The Lawyer from her old life. She’s new. Reinvented.
She tires of this too.
She becomes The It with an old Halloween wolf mask she finds at a charity shop. It feels lonely, alienating. She likes it, craves it. The odd looks, the attention.
One wrong movement and it’s over for Katy. Katy is hardly even a distant memory after the accident, she feels wiped clean.
She transforms into The It in her daily life.
Amnesia. Brain damage. Unhealthy attachments.
It’s hard to keep track of the days, the tasks required of her. She’s booted from her measly apartment. Her manager helps her out for a while- but she disappears at random, she wanders. It’s a mess, a liability.
She’s done a few matches with Florida Man , but her favorite slowly becomes Mason the Mutilator when he enters the scene as a relative to the local legend.
Mason, in a bizarre sequence of interactions, convinces Florida Man to take her in. She lives in the basement with her new friend. It’s comfortable. She really likes it.
She’s not too concerned with her job, or the going ons. The Puppeteer is in a work accident though, like her. She doesn’t understand it, but he lives in the basement now, too. Mason calls them The Basement Buds and it annoys The Puppeteer endlessly.
She feels at home with her friends, in the basement.
Frostbite
, Ivana, is unofficially adopted. She’s crazy.
Florida Man
thinks it is not nice to call people crazy, but it’s true. Katy feels very close to Ivana.
They have sleepovers in Ivana’s room and she lets Katy redecorate sometimes. Ivana paints her nails and they prank call people from the phonebook.
She still wanders. She doesn’t know if she likes it; she doesn’t understand why she does it. It’s seeking. It’s finding, discovering. She picks up pieces of a new Katy yet to be born.
She meets a sweet woman, Arleta . Arleta is pretty and curious. She’s making lemonade in her front yard when they meet. It’s dusk. It’s beautiful. Katy thinks she might be gay. She doesn’t understand the meaning of the word or the feeling.
She befriends Arleta. Wonders if everyone knows her already. Wants her new friend to meet the rest of her friends.
Sometimes a strangeness takes over her. She feels sad, empty, lonely . She reasons that she shouldn’t.
She picks up pieces from her friends and tells herself this is exactly who she is. There’s always something off.
