Summary
A sensitive German professor slowly loses his mind as he struggles to relate to his colleagues. Determined to understand every facet of the human existence, however, his curiosity drives him to maintain a friendship with one strange, domineering American mathematician. Eventually, as his mind spirals, the professor enlists to fight in The Great War and finds himself in a world where the darker aspects of his imagination can reign free. After returning home, he becomes an eminent figure among the German aristocracy and soon finds that socialites have far darker imaginations than he thought possible.
