Work Text:
Crosshair nervously swivels the toothpick back and forth in his mouth. He peeks back up at the chrono mounted to the wall and sees he’s still got three minutes before his appointment. A hand settles comfortably on his thigh, making him jump.
“Relax,” Tech tells him. “A tranvaginal ultrasound is nothing to worry about.” Crosshair anxiously swallows.
“Tech,” Echo snaps. He rubs Crosshair’s back. “It won’t be so bad,” Echo tries to console. “It’s important though. They need to check and see if everything looks okay.” Echo pauses his rubbing. Crosshair sees him softly smile out of the corner of his eye. “Thank you for inviting me.”
“Who else would I invite?” Crosshair sneers a little. “Hunter’s busy, Wrecker hates the doctor’s, that asshole Tech invited himself, and Omega’s too young.”
“I honestly thought you would invite Howzer,” Echo says, bumping Crosshair’s shoulder.
“Why?” Crosshair drawls out.
Echo makes a vague “I don’t know” sound then quickly changes the subject. “Maybe you can find out what the baby’s sex is.”
“Speaking if that,” Tech interrupts. “Are you going to find out the sex or wait until the birth?”
“Um…” Crosshair trails off as he thinks. Originally, Crosshair was going to, but he’s had some time to think it over and a surprise might be nice. He usually loathes any kind of surprise, but…this would be a welcome one. “I’m going to wait until they're here.”
“Fantastic!” Tech exclaims. He starts typing away on his datapad. “Now Echo, are you betting on a boy or girl?”
“Betting?” Crosshair inquires, squinting at his twin.
“Yes,” Tech answers, unperturbed by Crosshair’s glare. “So far only Wrecker and I have placed our bets. Since you are waiting for birth, we can pool in more credits. So, Echo, what is your bet?”
Echo is also ignoring Crosshair’s glare. He stares straight at Crosshair’s stomach, as if he can see what sex the fetus is. He twists his lips in thought.
“It’s gonna be a boy,” Echo responds, nodding his head. Tech nods and inputs Echo’s guess.
“A wise choice,” Tech says. “I have also placed my bets on a boy. Wrecker thinks Crosshair will have a girl.”
“Do I get a say?” Crosshair asks.
“If you would like,” Tech shrugs. Crosshair stubbornly decides not to. He doesn’t want his siblings to believe he prefers one over the other. As long as they are healthy with ten fingers and ten toes, he could care less about his baby’s sex. However, secretly, he does hope for a girl.
“No,” Crosshair shakes his head. “I’m not going to. I don’t want any of you changing your bets to mine. Both of you know that I’ll be right.” Tech rolls his eyes.
“If you insist, Crosshair,” he replies. “You should know, what is commonly referred to as “mother’s intuition” is just a superstition.”
“Oh,” Crosshair scoffs, rolling his eyes. “What do you kn-”
“Crosshair?” A nurse’s voice interrupts. Crosshair jumps to his feet and walks over. Echo and Tech trail behind him. “Crosshair?” The nurse repeats, politely smiling at him.
“Yes,” he answers as he flicks his toothpick in a bin.
“Follow me,” she motions for him to follow her through the door and out the waiting room. She takes his weight and tuts. After taking him to a private room, she takes his temperature, blood pressure, and measures his heart rate.
“Alright, Mama,” she says. “Everything looks good so far; however, you are a bit underweight for thirteen weeks. I would suggest eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, and lean proteins.” Crosshair nods along as she talks and notices Tech is furiously typing away on his datapad. Crosshair inwardly groans. He knows Tech is coming up with a new diet plan for him.
“So,” the nurse begins. “What symptoms are you experiencing, Crosshair?”
“I’m no longer having morning sickness. But I am experiencing constipation, vaginal discharge, and my breasts are more tender than before. And uh…” Crosshair’s eyes cut to his brothers. His face heats up as he thinks of his last, newest symptom. Echo respectfully glances away. Tech’s eyes bore into his soul. “My breasts are also leaking.”
“That’s normal,” the nurse smiles at him as she begins writing something down on a piece of flimsi. “It’s colostrum. Colostrum is the milk that appears for the first few days after you give birth. There’s no need to worry. I would recommend some cotton breast pads to absorb the fluid.” She hands over the flimsi for him. “This is the brand that worked best for me.”
“Thank you,” Crosshair nods. The nurse’s smile brightens. She pulls out a paper gown from the drawer and hands it to him.
“Get into his gown. You can fold your clothes and lay them on the table in the corner. Any questions for me?”
“No,” Crosshair tells the nurse. She smiles again.
“Dr. Vruas will be with you shortly.” With that, the nurse leaves.
Crosshair strips off the poncho Wrecker had let him borrow, then takes his shoes off. It’s a little chilly in the sterilized room, so he opts to leave his socks on. He’s in the middle of folding his shirt when Echo speaks up.
“Cross’ika!” Echo gasps. Both Crosshair and Tech jump at the voice. “You’ve got a little bump!” He cheers pointing at it. Crosshair softly smirks.
The other day after getting out of the shower, something caught Crosshair’s eye. There was a swell. It was barely there and could easily be concealed by his clothes, but it was there. Ever since that, his hand will trace up and down his belly, joyfully relishing the small curve.
“I do,” he confirms as he looks down. His hand roams down the swell as a small smile forms on his face. “It’s not much…but I love being able to…see proof of them.” A sniffle makes his head jerk back up. Echo is dabbing at his right eye.
“Shit vod’ika,” Echo chokes out through his emotions, hand coming up to hold his face. “I’m so happy for you. This is all so exciting.” Crosshair laughs, tears of his own welling up. Sitting down next to Echo, Tech smiles, likely just as excited, but not as prone to emotional outbursts.
“Do you want to feel?” Crosshair asks, poking his stomach out.
“You don’t mind?” Echo inquires.
“Of course I don’t,” Crosshair responds. “I let Omega feel around whenever she wants.”
“Yeah, well,” Echo half heartedly scoffs as he starts carefully rubbing Crosshair’s belly.. “She’s your favorite; you’ve never told our little sister no.” Echo grins, palm spread against Crosshair's stomach.
“Favorite?” Crosshair gasps. “I do not have-”
A knock on the door interrupts Crosshair. Echo moves back over to sit next to Tech. Crosshair hurriedly puts on the paper gown and tells the doctor to enter. A Mon Calamarian enters the room and holds out her hand for Crosshair to shake.
“My name is Dr. Vruas,” she greets. “You must be Crosshair? It’s so nice to meet you! Any questions for me before we begin?”
At Crosshair’s negative answer, she begins explaining what a transvaginal ultrasound is and how it works. Despite the glares Crosshair and Echo send Tech’s way for butting in, he continues to do so as Dr. Vruas talks. She smiles along as Tech blabbers and doesn’t seem to mind his input.
He was ready for the intrusion, but Crosshair still grunts in discomfort as the doctor inserts the device into his vagina. The pinching feeling fades after a while, and Dr. Vruas studies the monitor. The steady heartbeat of Crosshair’s baby fills the room. It’s a sound he’s come to love more than any other in the galaxy. Crosshair grins as he watches the image of his baby.
“Heartbeat sounds good and strong,” Dr. Vruas says. “Everything here looks perfect! Can I assume we will be wanting multiple photos?” Crosshair nods and feels something softly brush against his face. Cutting his eyes that way, he sees Echo’s face centimeters from his own with Tech right next to Echo. He laughs which snaps his vode out of their daze.
Crosshair laughs even harder as he recounts that part of the appointment to the rest of his family at their dinner table on the Marauder. Wrecker is laughing so hard his soda pours out his nose. Hunter is gripping his sides; Crosshair smiles as he realizes it’s been too long since his vode have laughed like this.
“I was excited,” Echo defends himself, tone hitching in an uncharacteristic whine. “Is that a crime?”
“You had to get that close?” Hunter asks through his giggles.
“I think it’s sweet,” Omega pipes up, looking away from where she was hyper focused on Crosshair’s swell. Her hand never leaves his stomach as she roams it up and down. She presses her face right at Crosshair’s tummy and talks to the fetus growing in him. “You hear that, ik’aad? Ba’vodu Echo is eager to meet you!”
Echo makes a choked off sound as he hops up from his place at the table. His hand comes up to wipe at his eyes again, and he closes the fresher’s door behind him.
“Softie,” Hunter murmurs, but Crosshair can see water welling in his own eyes.
“Here Omega,” Crosshair grabs his tote and hands it out to her. “Reach in there. I got you something.” The girl excitedly digs her hands in and pulls out his cotton breast pads. Her joy turns to confusion as she holds them out.
“What’s this?” She inquires, nose scrunched up and eyebrows drawn together. Crosshair quickly snatches them back and buries them in his bag.
“Nothing,” he hastily answers. Tech, the bastard, snorts. His smirk drops real quick after Crosshair’s fork finds the middle of his forehead. Satisfied that Tech learned his lesson, Crosshair gives Omega what he actually has for her. She squeals when she realizes what it is.
“That’s them!” Omega shows the sonogram to everyone sitting around the table then runs off to place the photo somewhere special.
“Awww,” Wrecker whines. “I didn’t get one?” Crosshair chuckles and passes out the other printed sonograms.
“So,” Tech says as he pulls out his datapad. “Hunter, what is your prediction on what our vodu’ad’s sex will be?” Hunter hums thoughtfully and stares at Crosshair’s abdomen like Echo did.
“Boy,” Hunter answers.
“I think it’s a girl,” Omega proclaims as she comes back into the conversation. Tech nods as he inputs their answers as well.
“I would like to talk more about where we want to settle,” Crosshair says.
When Crosshair told Howzer they were taking anything not bolted down, he meant it. Between the credits and wares they were able to sell off, the Batch now has a hefty sum of credits. Enough to start over somewhere new. Crosshair mentioned wanting to settle down somewhere safe, with a temperate environment and plenty of opportunities for his baby. His brothers agreed, so now they had their list of planets narrowed down to three- Alderaan, Naboo, and Chandrila, the planet they’re on now.
“I’ve had some time to think over Chandrila,” Crosshair tells them.
“Go on, Cross’ika,” Hunter assures him.
“Chandrila is nice, but it doesn’t feel…like home,” Crosshair explains, hand subconsciously coming to rub his bump.
“Okay,” Wrecker shrugs. “Then Chandrila’s out.” Crosshair huffs.
“I don’t want my opinion to outweigh any of yours,” he says. “What do you guys think?” Omega answers for everyone.
“It’s okay,” she lifts one shoulder up. “But it’s not as pretty as other planets we’ve been to.”
“There we go,” Hunter says, slapping his thighs. “Case closed.”
“Oh come on!” Crosshair sighs, exasperated. “You guys aren’t even bothering to contribute to the conversation. I don’t want to be the sole one to decide where we live.”
“You’re not,” Wrecker assures him. “We all made a list of planets.”
“And it’s just a coincidence that the top three were all planets I chose?” Crosshair rolls his eyes.
“Yes it was,” Tech chimes in. “Glad we could clear that up.” Crosshair rolls his eyes even harder.
“Whatever,” he shakes his head. He stands and motions to the ramp. “I’m ready to go to bed. Who’s spending the night with me tonight?” Omega hops up and raises her hand.
“Me! I want to!” Omega begs.
“No, you may not,” Tech says. “You have a bedtime you need to stick to as well as your lessons tomorrow. Plus, it is Hunter’s turn to go with Crosshair.” Omega lets out a whine and tries her puppy eyes with Crosshair. He shakes his head. Accepting her fate, Omega walks over to hug Crosshair goodbye.
“Good night, Crosshair,” she mumbles. “I love you.” Crosshair bends down to kiss the top of her head.
“Love you too, kid,” Crosshair returns.
After saying goodbye to everyone (including Echo, whose eyes have yet to dry), Crosshair and Hunter leave to return to Crosshair’s berth. Hunter’s hand rests on Crosshair’s shoulder as he guides him through the Shepherd. It’s a quiet walk back, and neither brother says a word until they’re tucked into the bunk.
“You know, Cross,” Hunter begins. “We really don’t care where we live, as long as it’s with you.” He runs a hand through his vod’ika’s hair.
“I know…” Crosshair sighs, grateful his back is to Hunter so he can’t see his face. “I just don’t want you to regret-”
“There will be nothing to regret,” Hunter says. He brings Crosshair into his arms for a hug. “You’re back with us, and we’re never letting you go again.” Crosshair takes a shuddering breath, fighting back the tears threatening to spill.
“Thank you,” he whispers, cursing the crack in his voice. “Can you sing to me?” He can feel his ori’vod smile into the back of his neck.
“Of course I can,” Hunter says. As Hunter sings, Crosshair drifts off to sleep.
The next morning in the mess hall after grabbing a tray of oatmeal with fruits and nuts, Crosshair sits down in his spot across from Howzer. The reg smiles at him, the smile reserved just for him.
“Good morning, Cross,” Howzer greets. “How did everything go yesterday?” Crosshair smiles and pulls out the sonogram he had printed for Howzer.
“Everything looks good,” Crosshair hands over the photo and points at it. “If you look there, you can see their arms and legs. The doctor also said their organs are fully formed now.” Howzer is only halfway listening as Crosshair talks; he’s too engrossed in the sonogram. His lips are curled up in a soft smile.
“That’s amazing, Cross,” Howzer sighs. He looks up at Crosshair to grin wide enough his scars stretch. “Did you find out the sex?”
“I didn’t,” Crosshair answers as he chews his oatmeal. “My brothers have a betting pool on what their vodu’ad’s sex will be.” Crosshair takes a long sip of water. “Would you be interested in joining the bet?”
“I can?” Howzer asks, eyebrows jumping up. Crosshair fondly nods his head.
“Of course you can,” Crosshair says. “I’m inviting you.” Howzer looks down and scrunches his face up in thought and twists his lips. He looks back up at Crosshair.
“What do you think the sex is?”
“Why do you ask?” Crosshair inquires. He knows Howzer cares about him, but he’s curious as to why he wants to know what he thinks. Howzer’s care about him feels different than the way his vode care about him. Crosshair’s vode are overprotective and a know-it-alls, but Howzer genuinely wants to hear about him and his feelings.
“Well, I like being right,” Howzer jokes, smirking. “And now that you're a mother, you have mother’s intuition, so you’ll be right.” Crosshair focuses on his breakfast so Howzer can’t see how his cheeks dust with pink. Howzer always knows what to say to make him blush.
“Don’t tell anyone I told you, okay?” Crosshair says. Once Howzer nods, Crosshair walks over to his side of the table and sits on the bench next to him. He cups Howzer’s ear with his hand and leans in close. His lips ghosting Howser’s lobe. “I think it’s a girl.”
Crosshair leans back to observe Howzer’s reaction with a smug smirk. Howzer’s face is a bright red. Subconsciously, his finger comes up to trace where Crosshair’s lips were. He nods a few times then turns to Crosshair.
“Then that’s what I’ll place my bet on,” Howzer says.
“Smart choice,” Crosshair replies as he brings his tray to him. He and Howzer fall into easy conversation. Crosshair finds it effortless to talk and laugh whenever Howzer is around. In the back of his mind, he can acknowledge he’s laughing as much as he did with Mayday.
“Oh, I got you something,” Howzer cheekily says. His hand hovers over the napkin on his tray.
“What is it?” Crosshair asks, eyes flicking from Howzer to the napkin and back. Howzer pulls the napkin away with some extra flare. There, laying on a smaller plate, is a sticky bun. Specifically, the sticky buns the mess hall served once three weeks ago that Crosshair has been craving ever since. Crosshair’s mouth waters.
“All yours,” Howzer scoots the pastry closer to Crosshair. He grabs the sticky bun and takes a bite. He groans at the taste, thankful Howzer snatched one for him.
“Me and my beskar’ika thank you,” Crosshair hums around the pastry. “How’d you find one?” Howzer blushes again and rubs his hand on the back of his neck.
“Well…” Howzer looks away, clearly a little embarrassed. “I talked to the mess hall staff about when they would serve sticky buns again, and they said it was a one time thing. So I…um,” Howzer’s eyes wander around as his blush deepens in shade. “I learned how to make them for you.”
Crosshair pauses his consumption of his sweet breakfast treat. He slowly turns so his entire body faces Howzer.
“You did that…for me?” Crosshair asks. He feels his eyes wanting to water.
“Yeah. I did,” Howzer confirms.
“But I…why?” Crosshair inquires. Howzer scoots a little closer and takes Crosshair’s hand in his own.
“Because I knew you liked them and wanted more,” Howzer answers. “I care about you. I…I like it when you smile.”
This time Crosshair cannot keep the tears at bay. They begin poking at the corners of his eyes, then slowly, they drip down his face and land on the table in front of him. He lets out a miserable little sniffle and feels something brush his cheek.
Howzer’s finger delicately wipes away a tear. His face is one of pure concern and affection. He brings his other hand up and holds it close to Crosshair’s other cheek in question. Crosshair leans forward so Howzer can cup his face.
“There’s no need to cry, Mesh’la,” Howzer coos as he wipes the tears away. Crosshair lets out a sob, and Howzer huffs out a laugh. “C’mon, Cross. It’s okay.” Crosshair lets his body fall into Howzer’s and feels the man’s arms wrap around him and rub down his back. Howzer strokes his other hand through Crosshair’s hair and shushes him.
“Crosshair!” Omega yells as she dashes across the mess hall. “Guess what- hey?” Omega stops as Crosshair brings his tear riddled face away from Howzer’s chest to greet her. Omega shoots Howzer a sour look, obviously blaming him for Crosshair’s emotional state. She quickly hops on the bench, straddles Crosshair’s lap, and brings his face to her chest. “What did you say to him?!” She asks Howzer angrily.
Crosshair chuckles as he pulls away from Omega. He sits her in his lap and tucks her hair behind her ears.
“There happy tears, Om’ika,” he tells her. “I’m hormonal which can cause me to cry easier, but I’m not sad. Nothing’s wrong.” He hugs her close. Omega hugs him back.
“Good,” she nods. Shyly, she glances over to Howzer. “Sorry,” she mumbles.
“It’s okay, ad’ika,” Howzer says. “You were just protecting your vod and vodu’ad.” Crosshair smiles at the reg. He appreciates Howzer’s efforts towards his little sister; they always make him feel warm.
Omega nods again before perking up.
“Oh!” She excitedly turns back to face Crosshair. “Guess what? Tech signed me up for an art class today and I’m allowed to invite other people!”
“That sounds fun,” Crosshair says. “I’m guessing I’m one of your invites?”
“Of course you are!” Omega cheers. “Tech let me look over the brochure. The teacher is from Naboo, and he’s offering lots of activities for us to do! We can paint, and make bracelets, and sew, and lots of other stuff!”
“Sounds exciting,” Crosshair says. He smirks picturing Tech trying to be creative. That’s one thing that drives his twin insane- he doesn’t have the artistic touch that Crosshair does. “Can’t wait to see Tech try to paint something.”
“Oh,” Omega hums. “Tech’s not going.”
“He’s not?” Crosshair scrunches his nose. “Then who else is going?”
“Well, I uh…” Omega looks over at Howzer. “Howzer, would you like to go with us?” Howzer’s eyebrows jump up in surprise.
“I would love to,” Howzer answers. “Is that okay with you though, Omega? If you want to go with one of your brothers, that's okay.” Omega shakes her head.
“No,” she says. “I want you to come along. I think you’re pretty cool, and Crosshair likes you, so I should probably get to know you better.” Crosshair tucks his face in her shoulder to hide his pinkening face.
“I’d love to come along, Omega. Thank you for inviting me,” Howzer says. “What time is this class?”
“It’s at one,” Omega answers. She climbs off of Crosshair’s lap. “So Crosshair, that gives you enough time to shower and put something nice on.” Omega winks. Crosshair pinches her nose and pushes her away.
“Shoo,” he tells her. Omega scampers off, giggling. He watches her until she leaves his sight then turns back to Howzer. Howzer is looking at him with his signature little smile.
“It’s cute how much she loves you,” Howzer says. His eyes flick down to Crosshair’s small swell. “It’s like a little preview of what your,” Howzer leans in closer to whisper. “Daughter will be like.”
Crosshair hums as his hand comes up to rub where his baby rests.
“Now I don’t know if it's a girl,” Crosshair says. “It’s just…I’d like a baby girl.”
“Nah,” Howzer shakes his head. “If you say it’s a girl, it’s a girl.” Crosshair rolls his eyes.
“Well, let’s not refer to them as a girl,” Crosshair says. “Beskar’ika could very well be a boy.”
“Beskar’ika,” Howzer hums. “It’s lovely. What brought on that nickname?”
“You said I’m made of Beskar,” Crosshair explains. “You said my baby is too, so,” Crosshair points to himself. “Beskar,” he lays the same hand on his belly. “Beskar’ika.”
“You’re so cute,” Howzer says. He sighs then looks at the vambrace on his wrist. “I’d better go shower as well. Meet up at your berth in say…an hour? We can leave a little early and go check out the park.”
“That works,” Crosshair nods. He smiles as Howzer takes both empty trays. “Thank you. See you then.”
“See you, Cross,” Howzer responds, winking as he walks off.
Unexpectedly, Crosshair finds Echo, Tech, and Omega waiting in his berth for him.
“Uh…” Crosshair trials off as he takes in their sunny faces. “Can I help you two?”
“We’re here to help you get ready!” Omega says. Crosshair squints his eyes at his older brothers. They’re up to something, but he can’t tell exactly what it is just yet.
“How so?” He asks the girl.
“Well, Tech was going to help you wash your hair, Echo wants to help dress you up, and I…” Omega trails off as she holds up Crosshair’s old makeup bag. “Want to do your makeup.” Crosshair humphs. He hasn’t done his makeup since…the last time they were on Coruscant.
They were celebrating Echo joining their group and decided to visit a club. Crosshair wore purple eyeshadow, black eyeliner, and dark purple lipstick. However, when he wore his makeup then, he was looking to get dicked down. He highly doubts that’s what they’ll be doing at Omega’s art class.
“Come along, Crosshair,” Tech says, using his hand to guide Crosshair towards the fresher.
Crosshair stands next to the sink as his twin turns the shower on and tests the temperature. Satisfied with it, Tech motions for Crosshair to undress. Despite their different anatomies, as twins the two of them were never shy about being nude around each other. Typically, when they were cadets, Tech was the one that accompanied Crosshair to the shared water showers.
Crosshair steps in the shower. He sighs blissfully as the warm water runs down his body. Tech steps in behind him with a shampoo bottle in his hand. Crosshair reaches for the bottle and reads it.
“Where’d you find this?” He asks, holding out the star cherry printed bottle. It was the shampoo he used to use during the war. He ran out and hasn’t had any luck finding more of it. Tech smirks as he takes it back and squirts some in his hands.
“I had to do some digging,” he says. He starts lathering the shampoo in Crosshair’s hair. “I had to scour the net to find one, but I was able to procure one for you.”
“Thanks,” Crosshair murmurs, eyes closed as he relaxes under his brother's touch. Tech takes his time massaging his hair. He rinses it off, then shampoos it one more time. Once he’s done, Tech pats his back.
“I also have a new exfoliating body scrubber for you as well as some star cherry scented soap,” Tech points to where he sat them. “I will leave you be.” Tech exits the shower and dries himself with one of the towels. Before he leaves, Tech turns on the radio and increases the volume so Crosshair can hear it.
Crosshair finishes washing himself and steps out to see Echo waiting for him.
“Alright so,” Echo says, holding up his arms which have articles of clothing draped over them. “Which one do you think would look better for today?” Crosshair’s hand rubs the fabric of his red sweatshirt. The weather today is supposed to be chilly and sunny, but he knows he’d be too hot in his sweater.
“This one,” he says, taking the red sweatshirt from Echo.
“Good choice,” Echo smiles. “I was thinking your brown tights would go best with that one. As for the shoes…maybe those little brown boots.” Crosshair rolls his eyes as he fits his nursing bra on and makes sure the cotton breast pads are secure.
“They're not brown. They’re taupe,” Crosshair clarifies. Now Echo rolls his eyes.
“Of course,” Echo sighs. “How dare I confuse two similar colors with each other.”
“Shoo,” Crosshair waves his brother away. Crosshair dresses quickly and finds his vode whispering conspiratorially around his little table. None of them notice his entrance.
“What’re you talking about?” Crosshair asks. They all jump back from where they were leaning on their elbows.
“Tech’s going to paint your nails while I do your makeup!” Omega says. “C’mere I’ve already got everything laid out.”
Crosshair sits down in front of her as she begins the process.
“Now,” she says. “What kind of look are you looking for today, Crosshair?” Omega grabs the foundation and the brush as she looks at him expectantly.
“Something simple,” Crosshair responds as Tech takes his hand to begin painting it with a red polish to match his top. “Not too much. Maybe just some foundation and blush.”
Crosshair has his eyes closed as Omega puts his makeup on. He lets her practice doing makeup on him. She’s done it a couple of times before, and he can admit she’s getting pretty good at it now.
“Okay, Crosshair,” Omega says. “Open your eyes so I can put on your mascara.” Crosshair does as he’s told and fights not to catch a peak at himself. He does; however, look at his nails. Tech is carefully and precisely painting on the red polish, and his eyes are squinted in concentration. Omega taps his nose to get his attention.
“Which lipstick would you like?” She asks, holding them out. Crosshair picks up the lightly tinted glitter gloss. Omega’s face falls in disappointment. “You don’t want the red one?”
“No,” Crosshair answers. “I think the red would be a bit too much for today.”
“But…” Omega trails off. “Don’t you wanna look nice for-”
“I believe the gloss is a perfect choice, Crosshair,” Tech’s clipped voice interrupts. “There, I am finished. Give your nails two minutes then they should be dry.” Crosshair cuts his twin a look, but Tech won’t look him in the eye.
“Okay,” Omega applies the gloss carefully. “There, I’m done.” She grabs the hand held mirror and holds it up to Crosshair’s face. “What do you think?” Crosshair moves his head around to observe himself and hums in approval. It’s simple, but he still looks eye-catching.
“Looks good, kid,” he tells her. “Thank you.” Omega’s face breaks out in a wide grin.
“You’re welcome!” She cheers as she hugs him tight. As Crosshair is holding her, an idea pops into his head.
“We’ve still got a little time before we leave,” Crosshair begins. “How about I do your makeup as well?”
“Yes, please!”
Crosshair takes his time doing Omega’s makeup. He keeps it simple, extremely simple. He only uses translucent powder, mascara, and the same lip gloss. He’s a little worried she’ll be disappointed that her look isn’t as colorful as the looks she likes. But, when he holds the mirror up for her to see herself, she gasps in excitement.
“I love it!” She says, turning her head back and forth like Crosshair did. She hugs him again and kisses his cheek.
“Well don’t the two of you look nice?” Echo says. “Tell you what, once Howzer gets here, we’ll take a picture of you guys.”
“Oh!” Omega perks up and shoots Crosshair a sly look. “We could get you a pretty frame to put it in as well. Maybe Howzer would like one as well!”
“Now what makes you think he-” A knock cuts Crosshair off.
“Come in!” Echo calls. Howzer enters the berth.
“Are you guys-” He stops in his tracks when he sees Crosshair. A pink blush consumes the reg’s face, starting at his cheeks and going down his neck. Howzer’s eyes are trailing up and down Crosshair’s body. Crosshair finds himself blushing under the reg’s attention.
“Hello,” he greets as he waves. Howzer snaps out of his little spell.
“Hi, Cross,” he responds. “You look…very nice.” The two engage in an awkward stare down until Omega slinks up next to Howzer and places her hand on his arm.
“Crosshair does look nice, yeah?” Omega asks. “What else could you say?” Crosshair puts his face in his hands.
“Omega,” Tech snaps, motioning for her to return to his side. She does, and Crosshair swears he hears his twin say something along the lines of “too obvious”. Still covering his face, Crosshair misses how Howzer comes over to grab his shoulder.
“Mesh’la,” Howzer says, tone steady and sure. “You look mesh’la, Crosshair.”
“Thank you, Howzer,” Crosshair nods. Howzer’s not dressed in anything special, just a faded tela poncho over his blacks, but Crosshair’s mouth waters at the sight. “You look handsome.”
“Thank you,” Howzer smiles. The smile drops and he yanks his hand back once he realizes the captive audience he and Crosshair have. “You ready to go?”
“Omega wants to take a picture,” Crosshair says, motioning towards the girl passing her datapad to Tech. She pulls Crosshair up to his feet and situates him next to Crosshair.
“Here, I’ll get in the middle. Howzer, why don’t you put your arm around Crosshair?” Omega suggests. Howzer looks to Crosshair, eyes subtly asking for permission. Crosshair takes Howzer’s hand and places it on the shoulder farest away so that his arm wraps around him.
“There,” Crosshair says, smirking. “Now we’re all ready.” He looks back up and finds his face startlingly close to Howzer’s. Howzer is staring at him shyly. Crosshair grins wide and bumps his forehead to rest against Howzer’s. He smiles back, and for just a moment, just a small, blissful moment, everything else vanishes, and it’s only Crosshair and Howzer, foreheads touching and looking into each other’s eyes.
The click of the datapad’s camera goes off. Both Crosshair and Howzer jerk their heads up in panic.
“Looks good you two,” Echo smugly says, leaning over to look at the datapad. “Alright, get out of here you crazy kids.” Echo hands Crosshair his tote bag and a handful of credits. He steers them to the door. “Have fun!” He and Tech wave goodbye.
“Bye!” Omega shouts as the door closes. She whips around the face the adults. “Let’s go! I saw that the park has a swingset.”
The walk to Chandrila’s park is pleasant. There is a gentle breeze that carries the sounds of a busy city. Omega grabs one of Crosshair’s hands and one of Howzer’s and happily chats as she swings their hands back and forth. Crosshair doesn’t engage in any conversation with Howzer since Omega’s right there. It feels awkward and…intrusive. Instead, Crosshair settles for the shy little glances he and Howzer sometimes exchange.
The sounds of children laughing and playing soon fill Crosshair’s ears. They turn a corner and find the park. There, just like Omega had said, is a swing set. Along with a dome climber, sand box, seesaw, monkey bars, merry go round, and a giant playset. Omega attempts to run, but Crosshair tightens his grip on her hand.
“Hold on, Om’ika,” he tells her. “You can’t run off. Let me and Howzer find a place to sit, then you can go play.” Omega pouts.
“I wanted you to play with me,” she juts out her bottom lip. Crosshair opens his mouth to explain why he can’t exactly be as physical as she would like, but Howzer beats him to it.
“Hey,” Howzer says as he ruffles Omega’s hair. “Crosshair can’t play like you and I can since he’s carrying Beskar’ika.” At Omega’s confused look, Howzer continues. “The baby. He has to be more careful.”
“Oh yeah,” Omega says. She turns and buries her face in Crosshair’s stomach. “Sorry ik’aad. Sorry Crosshair.” He wraps an arm around her to squeeze her.
“Nothing to be sorry for,” Crosshair rubs her back. “I can push you on the swings.”
“You sure?” She asks, eyes wide with hope.
“Of course,” he smiles. “Go on and grab one before some snot-nosed brat does.” Before Omega can run off, Howzer grabs her hand.
“We’ve got an hour before the class,” he says. “That gives you about forty-five minutes to play, okay?” She nods in agreement then runs off. As Omega runs to pick out a swing, Howzer turns to Crosshair.
“I’ll be over here,” Howzer motions to a bench. “Have fun.”
Crosshair pushes her on the swing and smiles to himself at her happy laughs and shouts of “higher”! Eventually he tires of standing and pushing her on the swing. Gracefully, Omega decides she wants to try the seesaw. Crosshair tells her he doesn't feel comfortable using one, but she calls for Howzer to join her. He and Howzer switch places and, from his spot on the bench, he takes several pictures of Howzer bouncing up and down the child’s size seesaw.
“Is that one with you?” A voice asks. Crosshair looks to the bench next to him and sees a male snivvian talking to him.
“The blonde girl?” Crosshair asks to confirm. The snivvian nods. “She is.” Crosshair goes back to watching her and Howzer, hoping he would be left alone.
“Those two are mine,” the snivvian responds, pointing to two younger snivvians using the monkey bars. “Little troublemakers my boys.”
“Yeah?” Crosshair replies. “Omega is the same way at times.” He smirks thinking about how insistent she can be.
“You and your husband have your hands full huh?” The snivvian jokes. Crosshair’s face falls as he scrambles to explain.
“Oh no, we’re not-” Fast footsteps approaching stop his explanation. Omega collides into him and hugs him.
“Mama!” She cheers. “Dad said we can go to that fried ice cream stand we saw on our way here before art class!” Crosshair gapes at Omega’s smiling face, absolutely astounded by her audacity. Howzer has a similar expression of shock on his face. A child crying out pulls the snivvian away.
“Have a good one,” he says as he walks off. Crosshair sits there, still in disbelief, as Omega continues hugging him close. He catches Howzer looking away with a flush on his face which snaps out of his daze. Flustered, he stands and begins tugging Omega away. She begins trying to speak.
“Not now,” Crosshair warns, voice low. Her expression changes, and Crosshair can tell she’s feeling sorry, but Crosshair is too embarrassed to care at the moment. Howzer is too embarrassed. He’s confused and agitated as to why she would lie like that. “Why did you call me and Howzer that?”
“I just,” Omega stammers out. “I thought that-”
“No,” Crosshair shakes his head at her, trying to remain calm. “You know I’m not your mother; Howzer’s not your father. Why would you say that?” Howzer’s shameful looks flashes in his mind again. “Don’t you think that’s a little embarrassing to Howzer?”
“I…” Omega looks down. “I’m sorry, Crosshair. I’m sorry, Howzer.”
“It’s okay,” Howzer shrugs. “Next time just…there’s no reason to lie, kid.”
“That’s right,” Crosshair nods. “I don’t know why you did that.” Omega peeks up at him with tear covered lashes.
“It wasn’t right,” Omega says. “You just-” Her eyes flick back up to look between them. “You look at each other like I’ve seen moms and dads do…I guess I just liked pretending for a minute.” Crosshair sighs and ignores the flutter in his chest that Howzer looks at him. Now he feels like an ass. He searches for what might be best to say to the girl, but he can’t think of what would make her feel better.
“Think about it, kid,” Howzer begins, tone gentle and understanding as he kneels to her level. “You have five older brothers who love and care about you. Most kids don’t even have one brother. You’re a lucky girl. I can see why you might like pretending to have what others do, but that’s not you.” Howzer places his hands on her shoulders. “Crosshair’s right, and I think it made him a little uncomfortable for you to call him that. You're his little sister, not his baby, you know?”
“Yeah,” Omega nods, wiping tears away. She turns back to Crosshair and shyly opens her arms. He sighs then wraps her up in his arms. He lays his head on hers and rubs up and down her back.
“I’m not mad anymore, Om’ika,” Crosshair tells her, guilt consuming him as she lets out a little sob. “Hey?” He pulls her back and smiles at her. “How about that fried ice cream? I could go for a coconut flavored one.” She wipes her eyes with her forearms and straightens up. She nods and points towards where they saw the stand.
“They’ve got that flavor,” she confirms. “I want a cinnamon sugar one.” Crosshair hums and runs his hands down her arms.
“Sounds delicious,” Crosshair takes her hand and starts that way. Howzer reaches for Omega’s hand, but she keeps walking. Crosshair hates the sad dejected expression on Howzer’s face, so he takes Howzer’s hand and rubs the back of it with his thumb. Howzer gives him that sweet smile of his.
“There it is!” Omega shouts. They reach the stand and everyone orders their fried ice cream. Crosshair pays the six credits and passes out everyone’s treats. Howzer guides them over to lena against an alleyway and enjoy their snacks.
“Alright,” Crosshair says after a few minutes of silent snacking. “We’ve got five minutes. Let’s wrap it up quickly. I’m not running down the streets in my condition.”
“It’s this way,” Omega nods down the street. “Tech made me memorize a map of the city last night.”
Howzer and Crosshair follow Omega as she leads them through the city. The bustle of the city sets Crosshair on edge, and this area is much more crowded than the one they had just come from. It’s been a while since he’s interacted with the public at large. Timidly, he offers his hand to Howzer. The reg takes it and strokes the back of his hand.
Omega stops in front of a quaint little, glass building. Crosshair can see a couple of people inside already, walking around and talking to each other. He groans at the thought of making small talk with strangers.
“Don’t worry,” Howzer squeezes his hand in reassurance. “I’ll be by your side.” Crosshair mouths his thanks out of Omega’s sight. The girl seems to be focused on their connected hands.
Howzer opens the door and lets Crosshair and Omega in first. A Gungan walks over to them and holds out his hand. The other one glancing at his datapad.
“Are you three here for the class?” He asks.
“Yes,” Omega confirms. “We’re under the name Tech.”
“Perfect. I’m Munti Domoss,” he introduces himself. “I’m a tailor from Naboo. My partner, Sidnala, is a painter.” He nods towards the human female bent over a table assisting a young child untwist their fabric.
“Nice to meet you,” Omega returns. “My name is Omega. This is my brother Crosshair, and that’s his friend Howzer.”
“A pleasure,” Munti nods. “So for today we have three different stations set up. There’s water painting, weaving, and embroidery. Are any of you familiar with any of these arts?”
“Crosshair is great at drawing!” Omega says. “He’s done a couple of paintings too, but we never had that many paints for him to use.” Munti smiles up at Crosshair.
“Well good,” he waves his arm out towards the room. “Go ahead, feel free to begin at any station.”
Omega is practically vibrating with elation. Her eyes are trained on the water painting section. She looks up at Crosshair.
“I’m going to paint!” She scampers off without any other word. Crosshair and Howzer both chuckle.
“Well, what do you think, Crosshair?” Howzer asks. “Where do you want to start?” Crosshair finds himself drawn to the quieter, slower paced station.
“Embroidery,” he answers. Howzer nods and smiles.
“I’m going to check out the weaving,” he says. He rubs his thumb across Crosshair’s hand one more time. “If you need me, just come get me, okay?” Crosshair rolls his eyes, even as his face flushes.
“I will,” he replies. Strangely, letting go of Howzer’s hand makes him feel a sense of loss.
Crosshair settles in the chair farest away from everyone else. On the table in little containers are multiple colors of thread, small beads, pearls, and several other materials used for sewing. Crosshair picks up a medium sized tambour frame and secures some white fabric to it. There are a few simple designs he could pick from to use, such as a porg, the sun, a flower, or a heart. He doesn’t really like the designs offered, so he decides to make his own.
He sits and stares at the empty frame until Mayday’s helmet pops into his mind. One of the instruction pamphlets recommends tracing the design first with a lead pencil, but Crosshair doesn’t need to. He knows Mayday’s helmet better than he knows his own face. He starts with the visor and uses the glossier, flatter beads to add a shine effect. After finishing the visor, inspiration strikes him. He adds an ice vulture behind the helmet and uses the same beads for the wings.
For the white area, Crosshair uses the white thread and for the wraps, he uses some different textured thread so there is a different feel. He’s finishing the touches on the dark brown band across the forehead when someone’s hand lands on his shoulder.
“Did you not hear me, mesh’la?” Howzer teasingly asks. He sees the embroidered helmet and vulture, and his eyes widen and his jaw goes slack. “That looks amazing, Cross! You did that in just two hours?”
“Two hours?” Crosshair jerks his head to the chrono. Just like Howzer said, it's been two hours since he started his project. Crosshair hums. “Yeah. I guess time got away from me.” Looking around, Crosshair feels self-conscious that he, Howzer, and Omega are the only ones left. Omega is talking with Sidnala, and Munti is making his way over.
“Are you finished, Crosshair?” Munti asks, smiling bright. “Your friend here wanted to rouse you, but I told him never take an artist away from their work.” Munti nods at the frame in Crosshair’s hands. “Might I see?”
Crosshair nods and shyly hands it over. Munti’s eyelids lift as he runs his fingers over it.
“This…is most impressive young man,” he says. Crosshair glances away and mumbles a thank you. “Do you live on Chandrila?”
“No,” Crosshair answers. “Right now, I live on a ship.”
“Are you looking to settle somewhere more permanent?” Munti asks as he hands the frame back over.
“Maybe,” Crosshair replies, eyes squinting in suspicion. “Why?”
“My daughter was my tailor, but she moved off world to further her education,” Munti says. “I’ve been looking for a new one.” He pauses so it can sink in for Crosshair. “You’re awfully talented; I can see it. I’d be delighted to take you on. However, you’re paid based on the work, not hourly, is that a deal breaker?”
Crosshair’s mouth dropped open at the offer the Gungan was giving him. It’s much more than he could ever hope for, and it sounds perfect. Naboo is one of the planets his vode agreed on. Plus, they have the credits to buy or even build a house.
“Would I-” Crossahir stumbles and shakes his head. “Would I need to move?”
“Yes,” Munti confirms. “I live in Theed. My business is based in the city as well. I’m afraid I can’t offer you housing.”
“No, that’s okay,” Crosshair assures. “We-my siblings and I- can find something.”
“So it’s a yes?” Munti asks, smiling. Crosshair glances at Howzer, needing just a nudge of reassurance. Howzer grins brightly and gives him two thumbs up.
“Yes,” Crosshair answers, but Crosshair has one condition, and he hopes it’s not too much to ask. “But I’m pregnant, and I’d like to take a year off after they’re born.” Munti’s smile brightens.
“That’s no problem at all, Crosshair,” he assures. “My partner and I took time after we adopted our first. Completely reasonable.” Munti takes out his comm and offers it to him. “Enter your comm code. Once you and your family get settled in Naboo, comm me. Sidnala and I will bring you some housewarming gifts.”
“Thank you,” Crosshair says, shaking Munti’s hand.
“No problem,” Munti responds. “I’m glad you and your friends had fun today.”
“I know Omega did,” Howzer says. He laughs a little. “We’ll probably have to drag her out of here.”
“Nah, watch this,” Crosshair smirks. “Om’ika! Want to get dinner before we go back?”
“Yes!” She answers. She thanks Sidnala and then Munti. “Oh, Crosshair! Look what I painted!” Crosshair takes the flimsi in his hand and smiles. It’s a colorful painting of a rainbow over a deep blue ocean.
“Looks good, kid,” Crosshair compliments as he runs a hand through her hair. “C’mon,” he takes her hand. “Let’s go.”
Crosshair waves goodbye one final time as they walk out the shop. Much like their walk to the park, he and Howzer each hold one of Omega’s hands as she sways and excitedly chatters.
“I’m glad you said yes to Munti’s offer,” Howzer whispers, leaning in closer to Crosshair.
“It felt right,” Crosshair says.
“Like I said, mother’s intuition,” Howzer knocks his head gently against Crosshair’s. He looks down to softly smile.
However, after Howzer’s done talking, Crosshair can’t help but notice that Howzer didn’t show him what he had made. Did he not have fun? Could he not find anything to do? What if he hates art, but couldn’t say no because he feels like he had to go? What if he tried and failed to make something and now he’s frustrated at Crosshair’s skills?
His thoughts are broken off as Omega pulls them into a noodle restaurant. Crosshair can admit, the food smells good, and Beskar’ika immediately demands a hot bowl. Omega sits on one side of the table and announces she wants to sit alone. Crosshair squeezes shoulder to shoulder with Howzer.
The food was great. Crosshair can tell Beskar’ika appreciates the food, and he finds himself ordering another. Howzer, being the polite man he is, comms Crosshair’s vode to ask if they want anything. Of course, the answer is a resounding yes.
Upon returning to the Shepherd, Crosshair’s vode greet them and take the food from them. Omega shows off her painting and beams under everyone’s praise. Echo cuts his eyes to where Crosshair and Howzer are standing.
“You too have fun?” Echo asks. If Crosshair isn’t mistaken, his ori’vod seems a little too chipper. Crosshair shrugs in answer.
“It was fine,” he replies. “We need to have a meeting tomorrow about where we want to live.” Echo nods.
“I’ll pass the message along,” he looks between the two of them. “Would the two of you like to join us?”
“No,” Crosshair shakes his head. “I want to get into my pajamas.”
“I’ll walk you back,” Howzer offers. Echo walks closer to hug his vod’ika.
“Take care, Cross’ika,” Echo pulls back and motions to Crosshair’s stomach. After receiving a nod, Echo runs his hand up and down. “Take care, vodu’ad.” Echo straightens up and clasps Howzer’s arm with his own. “Howzer.” The two nod at each other, something passing between them that Crosshair can’t recognize, then Echo leaves to enter the Marauder. Once Echo is out of sight, Howzer’s hand slips to Crosshair’s back.
“Let’s get you two comfortable,” Howzer says. Crosshair’s heart swoons at “you two”. He allows Howzer to lead him back to his berth. He excuses himself to change in the fresher, still a little too shy to show skin in front of Howzer in a more intimate, non sexual way. Crosshair expects Howzer to be gone when he exits, but he’s still there, sitting at the small table. He stands.
“I wanted to give you something,” he states, reaching into a pocket. “I thought I’d do it away from Omega’s nosey little eyes.” Crosshair snorts and holds his hand out to accept what Howzer has. It’s a long piece of purple, red, and black threads all woven together. Crosshair delicately runs his thumb down it.
“It’s a bracelet,” Howzer says. He takes it back and carefully ties it around Crosshair’s wrist. “I thought you might like a bracelet. You wear that necklace all the time.” Crosshair, who was fondly tracing the braided threads, stops in his tracks. He wants to jerk away and send Howzer home, but he knows he needs to talk about it.
He doesn’t want to, but his vode have been not so subtlety urging him to talk. However…Howzer is much easier to talk to. Crosshair takes a deep breath before beginning.
“The necklace belonged to Beskar’ika’s father,” Crosshair explains. He pulls it out from where it sat under his blacks. The silver flashes in the dim lighting. “He hated his dog tags, that it was just his number. He took it off.” Crosshair shallows. He’s picturing when Mayday told him the story of his necklace as Crosshair laid against his bare chair, a warmth spreading inside him despite the cold howling outside. “He saved a young girl on Glee Anselm, and she gave him a charm in thanks.” Crosshair holds the charm between his fingers the way he often does when nervous. It’s a pretty charm- a sea shell with a pearl in the middle.
I can’t even swim! Mayday had laughed.
A tear slips down his cheek. Crosshair clears his throat and slips the necklace back under his clothes.
“Yes,” he says, cursing the little waver in his voice. “I like the bracelet. Thank you.” Crosshair hastily tries to wipe the tears falling from his face when Howzer wraps him in a hug. It’s pleasant and full of affection. Crosshair returns the embrace and buries his face his Howzer’s neck. In Howzer’s arms, a calm surrounds him. Crosshair closes his eyes and, for just a second, imagines Mayday. But Howzer smells different, and it wouldn’t be fair to him as he’s his own person.
He’s not Mayday.
And that’s okay.
Slowly, Crosshair pulls his face away from Howzer’s neck and lays his cheek against the other man’s.
“Thank you,” he whispers. “For the bracelet… and for holding me.” Wanting to truly express his gratitude, Crosshair presses his lips to Howzer’s cheek in a soft, chaste kiss. Howzer’s breathing stutters.
“You’re welcome, Mesh’la,” Howzer says. “Anytime.”
Crosshair shuffles back to firmly press his forehead to Howzer’s. He has to bend a little so their noses brush, but it feels perfect. Crosshair flutters his eyes open to find Howzer’s open as well, looking into his soul. Crosshair’s stomach growls.
The two break apart laughing at the interruption. Crosshair holds his protesting belly in an attempt to quiet it, but it doesn’t work. Howzer takes a sharp breath.
“Omega mentioned that you had a little bump now,” he says, eyes locked on Crosshair’s aforementioned bump. “I had an image in my mind…but it’s different seeing it in person.” Crosshair looks at Howzer through his lashes.
“Would you like to feel?”
“Yes,” Howzer immediately answers. “Yes please.” Crosshair smirks as he stretches his blacks over his stomach so it protrudes out more. He kneels down in front so he’s face to face with Crosshair’s tummy. Gently, Howzer places both his hands to cup it and slowly runs it back and forth. It’s much different than how Omega and Echo feel. It’s more steady, grounding.
“Hi Beskar’ika,” Howzer coos. “I thought you might like to know that everyone’s so excited to meet you.”
This time, Crosshair closes his eyes and, selfishly, imagines it’s Mayday kneeling in front of him talking to his unborn baby.
His stomach growls again, interrupting the moment.
“Guess someone’s still hungry,” Crosshair chuckles. He purses his lips and thinks. This is the second gift Howzer had gotten him. He wants to return the favor. “Howzer? Do you like sweets?”
“My sweet tooth’s not as big as yours,” Howzer jokes, grinning. “But I could go for some dessert.”
“Then you’re in luck,” Crosshair says as he puts shoes on. “I make a mean chocolate cherry cheesecake, and if the manifests Tech reviews every rotation are correct, the ingredients I need are waiting for us in the mess hall.”
“Oooh,” Howzer licks his lips. He grunts as he stands and cracks his back. Subconsciously, Crosshair’s body recognizes the groan and looks away before Howzer can catch him blushing. “Sounds amazing.”
“C’mon then, alor’ad,” Crosshair teases. “If you’re good, I’ll let you lick the spoon.” Crosshair jokes and offers Howzer his hand. The two walk together, hand in hand, to bake together.
“Well?” Tech asks, turning the radio to its full volume and placing it next to the door and keeping his voice low in hopes Hunter wouldn’t hear. Or, at least, couldn’t hear everything. “Did they say anything to each other?”
“Not really,” Omega answers. “Just small talk, but…they didn’t appreciate the ‘mama’ and ‘dad’ thing though…”
“Why would you call them that? Echo asks, scrunching his nose. Tech clears his throat.
“I thought it might push them along,” he admits, looking away in shame, cheeks pinkening. “I figured the two of them would benefit from a hint.” Echo deeply sighs and brings his finger and thumb up to pinch the bridge of his nose.
“Well Omega,” Echo sighs again. “Did Crosshair and Howzer…do anything romantic? Brush against each other? Or maybe Howzer touched Crosshair’s lower back?”
“They held hands!” Omega says. “And I made them sit together at the restaurant!”
“Ah well,” Tech shrugs. “I suppose it is still too early to hope for a love confession.”
“Maybe, but our makeover worked!” Omega cheers. “Howzer was staring at Crosshair allll night like this!” Omega places her hands on her cheeks and does her best impersonation of a lovesick Howzer.
“It’s better than nothing,” Echo says.
“Yeah…” Omega agrees. “Plus, I haven't seen Crosshair smile that much since we got him back.”
“Then it seems our mission was a, somewhat, success after all,” Tech says, a hint of smile on his face.
