Work Text:

Missa slowly wakes up to the feeling of something hard and bony digging into his back, making him groan as he tries to shift away from it and ease the pain. The thing poking into the back of his ribs follows him though, drawing out another whine from him and fully dragging him out of his doze.

Missa blinks, eyes sticky and thick as purple stained sunlight streams into his shared bedroom and onto his face. He turns a little to see what on earth was jabbing him, seeing Chayanne sprawled out upside down behind him, one of his scaly heels digging into his side and the other leg up on the wall, mouth open and drooling in his sleep. His feathery black wings are messily flared out on the bed, blonde-black hair spilling over his face and blanket as he snores. Missa feels something at his stomach shift, looking down to see Tallulah tightly coiled into a little ball at his torso, curls tucked away in her purple sleeping cap and brown-black feathered wings twitching slightly where they press tightly against her back, tail wrapped around her waist.

Phil is practically all over him, one arm over his chest and a leg tangled between his, dark, black, clipped wings spread out behind him, several feathers shimmering with void-stain that rendered them harmless to the touch but useless in flight. Golden hair with a single streak of dark purple running through it drapes over Phil's shoulders and face, looking a lot like Chayanne in the way his limbs splay and he snores quietly tucked into the crook of Missa’s neck. Missa tries to wiggle around a little to make himself comfortable, but Tallulah digs her claws into his tank top and Phil pulls him in a little closer with a quiet grumble.

“Porque tenemos pinche cama tan grande pero todos se duermen en mi lado??” Missa sighs, grunting as Chayanne rolls over in his sleep and sprawls over his stomach, scaly foot now digging into his chin. “Okay. Eso ya es suficiente.” He snorts, wiggling a hand out of the pile and pushing his son off of him. Chayanne whines and wiggles around, now latching onto Tallulah who frowns in her sleep and starts trying to squirm out of her brother's hold.

Missa laughs a little and moves Chayanne over to where Tallulah is, the two tangling up almost immediately in an instinctive pile of limbs and feathers as they yawn and warble quietly while adjusting themselves. With the kids out of the way, it allows Missa to try and sit up.

Try, because his husband's grip on him tightens and the Avian grumbles as he sleepily tries to pull him back down.

“ ‘s t' w'rm” Phil whines, trying to tug Missa closer with a leg “C'm h're…”

“You can't keep using me as a cooler” Missa chides playfully, smiling fondly as Phil groans and buries his face in his pillow, wings flexing slightly

“So mean t' meeeeee” Phil complains, a deep, pleased thrum starting up in his chest as Missa gently strokes his hair while slowly sitting himself up to try and slip out of bed

“Ya está el sol” Missa hums, tucking a strand of golden hair behind a pointed, dark stained ear tip that flicks when he accidentally brushes against it “Voy hacer desayuno por nosotros y los niños, okay?”

Phil merely muffles his mutters into his pillow and falls back asleep.

Missa takes it as permission and carefully reluctantly pulls himself out of Phil's hold to crawl out of the massive nest made of pillows and blankets that took up their entire group bed. Missa didn't even know you could craft beds of that size, but his spouse and kids had somehow managed it, creating a warm, cozy place to crash after a long day. And Missa would know, he's admittedly passed out for days straight in their collective bed when he'd come home after a long time out collecting souls for his job.

But as much as he wants to curl back under the sheets, Missa makes himself get out of the bed and stretch, bones popping and cracking as he rearranges himself. He smooths out his black-plaid pajama pants and grey tank top, humming quietly as he spreads his skin back over the parts that had exposed themselves in his sleep and making sure the golden heart pendant that had slipped under his shirt was now over his chest on proud display.

Missa heads to the kitchen and starts looking around in the cabinets and fridge as he decides on what to make. Usually Chayanne was in charge of most of the family meals, but Missa didn't want to wake his son up and unlike Phil who could burn water without even trying, Missa was at least capable of making breakfast without setting the house on fire.

He considers for a moment on making tacos or chilaquiles for breakfast, maybe even some migas con huevo y chorizo since those were simple enough and he's pretty sure they had all the ingredients. But Missa is admittedly in the mood for something sweet that morning, so he settles on making pancakes instead, with migas as an extra bonus. A weird combo, sure, but one can't go wrong with either option.

That and he's pretty sure Tallulah isn't too big a fan of sweets if he recalls correctly.

It takes a couple trips down to the bonus pantry they have in the storage room under the house to get everything he needs, but soon Missa has everything laid out on the counter and can get to cooking. It's a peaceful way to start his morning, much calmer than the neighborhood cookouts and parties being had on the beach outside he'd often wake up to on his days off. It was honestly impressive how often Phil and the kids would throw get togethers, the weekends usually just one straight party of people stopping by for food, drinks and gossip.

Even without a place on the wall near Spawn, it seemed like the Death Family house was still the place to hang.

Missa hums a quiet tune as he makes pancake batter, walking around the kitchen singing to himself as the sun slowly rises higher and higher over the ridge across the river. He loves the peace of his family's little home, interrupted only by the lows of the farm animals under the house and birdsong of the feathered creatures scattered around. He's busy sneaking Brian and Esperanza a few berries he'd put into the pancakes when he hears a quiet ‘mmrp’ from the bedroom indicating one of his kids is finally awake.

Chayanne shuffles into the living room, nose sniffing the air as his tail drags and wings droop, clearly still sleepy if his big yawn, fluttering ears and half-closed eyes was any indication.

“Buenos días, mijo” Missa chuckles as Chayanne sleepily rubs the last of his slumber out of his eyes, looking over at him with a small head tilt and questioning chirp. He yawns again and lets out a small, needy whine, making grabby motions with his scaly hands and causing Missa to quietly laugh as he goes over and picks up his son, adjusting him in his arms a little as Chayanne churrs contentedly, wraps his arms around his neck and rests his chin on Missa's shoulder.

“Has crecido tan grande, Chay” Missa murmurs, stroking his son's thick, blond hair with black roots and teasing out small knots as he does. It seemed like only yesterday his son had only been the size of a small toddler, with a stubby tail, nubs for horns, dull talons and soft scales, tiny webbed wings fluttering on his back. Now the weight in his arms is much heavier, tail long and spined as it slowly swishes, wings bigger and covered with rich, inky feathers that match Phil's, thin, long, black horns poking out of his hair, talons sharp and scales tough.

He knows he'll start crying if he thinks about it for too long, so he takes a deep breath, gently squeezes his son and walks back towards the kitchen.

“Estoy haciendo desayuno, quieres ayudar?” Missa offers. Chayanne perks up and nods, tail wagging happily as he wiggles out of Missa's arms to rush towards the counter. He slaps his hands on the table excitedly, looking over at Missa with an impatient warble “Bueno, ya he hecho casi todos los panqueques” he admits, looking over at the stack of blueberry and strawberry pancakes he'd already set on the dining table “Y migas con huevo no son muy difícil de hacer- ah! Se me olvidó la pinche salsa!” He exclaims, running a hand through his hair in exasperation “ Chingada madre-”

‘I can make the salsa papá :D’ Chayanne writes, webbed ears wiggling excitedly as he holds up his sign

“Sí?” Missa asks with a smile, chuckling as the dragonet nods eagerly “Okay. Yo hago las migas con huevo y chorizo, y tú haces la salsa para las migas. Listo?”

‘Listo apá!’ Chayanne confirms with a firm nod and happy trill

“Así vamos!” Missa cheers, fistbumping his son and pulling the plate of tortillas over to the stove to start chopping up and frying “El molcajete está allá arriba en el barril y los ingredientes están próximo del refri” he informs, pouring a good amount of oil into the pan and tossing in chopped up tortilla to start cooking.

Chayanne quickly takes over his little station, firing up the stove on his side and carefully setting out his vegetables to roast over the grill while Missa finishes up the last part of breakfast.

‘Papá I'm going to make some whipped cream’ ‘for the pancakes’ Chayanne sets down, tugging on Missa's shirt and pointing at them before heading over to the fridge to rummage through

“Sabes cómo hacer crema?!” Missa exclaims in awe and Chayanne giggles, nodding proudly as he dumps his new ingredients over at his spot “No mames Chayanne, desde cuando eras un super máster chef?”

Chayanne trills and his wings puff up in pride as claws easily pluck off hot, lightly charred vegetables from the grill to skin and deseed, chittering away to Missa in his own dragon language as he expertly wields his cooking knife and dumps sliced up peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos and onion into the molcajete to grind up. Missa turns around as he hears a small, sleepy chirp, smiling as a bleary Tallulah wanders into the room with a yawn, tiny forked tongue flickering and tail swishing slowly over the floor.

“Buenos días, mi niña” Missa greets, Chayanne cheerily warbling equal sentiment as he works “Dormiste bien, mija?”

Tallulah nods and stretches out, whining a little as her rumpled brown and black feathers fluff as her wings spread out before smoothing down as she relaxes her limbs.

‘Buenos días apá!’ Tallulah writes, holding up her sign with a smile before setting it on the floor to write a new one ‘q estan haciendo? Huele rico’

“Desayuno!” Missa tells her, flicking off the stove to make his way over as she makes grabby motions with her hands like Chayanne had not too long ago. He scoops up his daughter into a hug, laughing a little at the immediate churr that starts up in her chest as she cuddles into his arms and carefully strokes a hand between her wings “Hicimos unos panqueques con fruta y ya casi termíno las migas. Chayanne está haciendo una salsa para las migas y también crema para los panqueques. Bueno, la salsa primero y luego la crema yo creo”

‘Puedo ayudar?’ Tallulah asks, tail wagging as Missa kisses her forehead and sets her down

“Claro que sí, querida” Missa coos, leading her into the kitchen “Chayanne, hazle espacio a tu hermana” he tells his son, Chayanne scooting over and pushing the bowl and bottle of thick cream towards Tallulah “Ah, Tallulah va hacer la crema?” Missa guesses and Chayanne nods, pausing in his own cooking to quickly explain to his sister how to make whipped cream on his signs.

Missa leaves the two children to figure it out, going back to his pan of migas and scraping them out onto a plate to set on the table before wiping his hands off on his shirt and heading back into the bedroom.

Phil, now alone, is still sprawled out in the nest, wings spread high in the air and an arm looking awkwardly twisted over his head as he dozes. Missa stifles a laugh at the sight, going over to the bed and carefully taking a seat, snickering at the small trail of drool trickling down Philza's chin while he softly snores. Missa hums fondly and leans back to use a blanket to clean his husband's face off, pausing as a bright blue eye faintly edged with purple cracks open and looks at him

Something in Missa's chest melts into a pathetic pile of goo as Phil's thin pupil rounds out as soon as he recognizes him, a small, almost cocky yet still fond smile spreading over his face as his pointed ear flicks in automatic greeting

“Buenos días, Cuervito” Missa hums

“G'mornin, Lovey” Phil replies far too sweetly, slightly muffled by his pillow but the words making Missa's bones weak all the same and he carefully lays back to regather his strength, looking over at Phil across from him “Buenos días. Wh're th’ eggs?”

“Awake, like you should be” Missa teases as Phil groans and tries to bury his face away back into his arms and pillow “Vamos, ya despiertate wey. Sun is up, food is almost ready.” A blue eye peeks back out, gleaming with curiosity

“Whas for breakfast?” Phil asks through a big yawn, wings spreading out behind him before slowly pulling themselves in to settle against his back, the strangely graceful display tempting Missa to bury a hand in the plumage despite knowing how bad of an idea that would be to do so suddenly and this soon after Phil had woken up “Smells really fuckin good in the house”

“Pancakes con crema and some migas with fresh salsa” Missa tempts, laughing as he hears Phil's stomach rumble softly against the mattress

“That sounds awesome” the blonde mumbles, yawning again “What are migs-migas? Migas, right?”

“Migas.” Missa confirms with a nod “Con huevo y chorizo”

“Yeah, that.” Phil chuckles “That sounds really good, what is it?”

“You'll have to get up and see” Missa taunts, sitting back up with a grin as Phil moans dramatically and pulls a pillow over his head

“You're a prickkkkkkk” He whines, warbling and cooing quietly as Missa brushes aside some of his hair and presses a soft kiss on the back of his neck “Five more minutes…”

“Ya levántate viejo” Missa snorts, patting his shoulder and starting to scoot back towards the edge of the nest. He doesn't get the chance though, because a wall of feathers pulls him away, strangling a yelp out of him as he's tugged back and Phil wraps strong arms around his middle, yanking him backwards into the bed.

“What'd you call me?” Phil drawls, squeezing Missa's sides and making him squeal as he tries to wiggle away “Nah nah Missa. Go ahead. Translate that last word for me” Phil goads, grinning sharply as Missa laughs and writhes trying to escape his hold

“No dije nada! No dije nada!” Missa screeches, kicking his legs frantically as Philza tickles him “No dije nada- Chayanne!! Tallulah!! AYUDAAAAAA!!”

Chayanne and Tallulah poke their heads around the corner, looking concerned for a moment before their faces morph into amusement.

“Ayudenme!!” Missa pleads, letting out another shriek of laughter as Phil's hands travel up his ribs to under his armpits “AYUDA A TU PAPÁ!”

‘You brought this on yourself Pá’ Tallulah holds up with a shake of her head, Chayanne not even bothering with a reply and heading back into the kitchen to finish cooking

“Yes!! I have the kids' favor!” Philza cackles, falling back with Missa still in his grip and playfully blowing a raspberry on Missa's jaw to make him laugh once again “I win!!”

Traicioneros!!” Missa screams, unable to stop laughing as he's flipped and pinned under Phil, raspberries pressed all over his unmasked face no matter how he scrunches his nose or tries to wiggle away.

He eventually manages to shove Phil off, the Avian curled up and wheezing with glee beside him as Missa sits and tries to catch his breath through his giggles. The simple task of breathing is near impossible though, because one poorly timed laugh or snort simply sets them off again, the two balling up in the nest laughing hysterically at nothing but each other as they pathetically try to stop. They finally manage to calm themselves down enough to sit up, Missa wiping tears from his eyes while Phil giggles.

“Okay, no more” The blonde hiccups, wings fluffed up and face red from laughing “No more, my stomach hurts now”

“Good, that's what you deserve” Missa huffs out, cheeks aching from how long he'd been smiling

“Well don't go calling me old then” Phil retorts with a grin and wink, leaning over and pressing a quick kiss on Missa's cheek before getting out of bed “Alright! Breakfast!!”

“A comer!” Missa agrees, also getting out and stretching his arms before heading into the kitchen where Chayanne and Tallulah are finishing setting up the table with plates and cups of fresh orange juice. Phil greets both of his children good morning with a kiss on their heads, well, Chayanne’s head and Tallulah’s cap. Missa suddenly remembers her hair and goes over to his daughter’s belongings barrel as she takes a seat and pulls the plate of migas towards her to fill up her own bowl. “Tallulah~” He sing songs as he comes back with a spray bottle, conditioner, several clips and wide-toothed comb “Te tengo que peinar”

Tallulah warbles reluctantly but unties her cap before going back to digging into her food, bright blonde curls spilling over her shoulders and back, pitch black roots like a small puddle of ink on the top of her head. Missa wasn’t sure what caused the abrupt change of hair color, the whole family freaking out a little when they woke up to find Tallulah’s hair a different color from its usual brown with blonde roots. But he supposes she wasn’t the only one with a different style nowadays, glancing over at Phil’s dark-stained fingertips plucking a pancake from the stack to pull onto his plate, a few dark splotches scattered over his arms and skin.

The stains were harmless now, though. Missa had made sure of it.

“Quieres un chongo o una trenza hoy?” Missa asks as he sections Tallulah’s hair to start on her morning hair routine and wetting her hair with the bottle. He carefully rubs some conditioner in it in order to keep her curls pretty as he combs her hair out and fluffs it out a little, separating clumps to get more volume. Tallulah wiggles her ears as she leans into the comb scratching her scalp, happily eating her food while Missa does her hair, holding up a single finger to reply to his question “Un chongo?” Tallulah nods in confirmation “Okay, I’ll do that then”

“Mmm, did you guys stretch your wings already?” Phil asks through a mouthful of pancake. Chayanne and Tallulah pause in their meal, sharing a panicked look before bringing out signs to scribble on. Phil slumps and covers his face with a hand “ Guys. We do this every morning”

“I’d take that as a no” Missa chuckles while Phil groans

‘I forgor’ Chayanne admits with a sheepish smile

‘Did you do your stretches papa?’ Tallulah accuses, wiggling her ears at him as he scowls at the sign

“Alright, listen here you little shit” Phil starts, leaning back in his seat and bedraggled wings fluttering a little as his cheeks flush, Chayanne and Tallulah warbling and chirping with laughter as they protest with flaring wings and waving hands. “I am a grown ass man with full grown, very much damaged wings. I don’t need daily stretches like you two-”

“Or regular preening apparently” Missa mutters under his breath, smothering a grin as Phil turns to him with an expression of betrayal on his face, Chayanne and Tallulah looking quite smug in their seats

“I… am working on being better about that” Phil huffs, face somehow turning redder as he slumps further in his chair and refuses to look at his family, quietly cawing indignantly to himself

“So does this mean you will preen today?” Missa lightly teases, pulling out a few scrunchies and setting them on a wrist to hold out for Tallulah to pick. She chooses a purple one with white polka dots and Missa dutifully ties her hair back low on her head. “How long has it been?” he presses gently, seeing his kids perk up at the thought of a group preening session

“...maybe.” The Avian sighs, shoving food in his mouth to avoid more conversation “A while, I guess- holy shit this is really good” he notes, looking down at his plate of migas “What's this called again??”

“Migas” Missa informs as he quickly washes his hands in the sink and goes over to sit and eat, handing Phil the comb, spray bottle and a normal hair tie “Con huevo y chorizo, egg and like a spicy meat sort of”

‘You should try it with salsa papa’ Tallulah suggests and Chayanne nods eagerly, handing over the molcajete full of fresh, warm salsa ‘it's not too spicy’

“Ooh! I think I will” Phil hums, taking the bowl and scooping out a little to pour over his plate, shoving a few bites into his mouth before getting up and rounding the table to Chayanne “Damn. That's even better. Who made that?” he asks, spraying Chayanne's hair and running the comb through his thick hair to smooth it out

‘I made the salsa and Papá made the migas’ Chayanne proudly informs

“Teamwork, nice!” He chuckles “You guys did good, it tastes delicious! Hair pulled up or down today, Chay?” Chayanne taps the back of his neck as a response “Down it is, king!” He declares, pulling Chayanne's thick, semi-long hair back into a low, short ponytail and tightening it “Mmkay. Tallulah, what bandanna are we thinking today?” Phil questions, going back to Tallulah's barrel to put the hair supplies back “Purple, green, black? Maybe the new pink one with the flowers Missa bought you- What are we thinking, queen?”

Tallulah taps a claw on her chin in thought, nose scrunching as she thinks about it for a good minute before pulling out a sign.

‘The green one apá got me last week!’ ‘The one with white flowers :D’ She decides

“Green with white flowers, will do” Phil chuckles, pulling out the corresponding scarf his daughter wanted.

He ties the deep, forest green bandanna embroidered with delicate little vines of white jasmine on the borders over Tallulah's hair and under her ponytail, making sure it was snug and comfortably placed before gently tugging out her bangs for her to style over her face as she liked.

“La crema es muy buen hecho, Tallulah” Missa compliments as he eats his pancakes with a large dollop of whipped cream as Phil goes back to his seat to finish eating “Buen trabajo”

‘Gracias apá :)’

“So, migas is just egg, sausage and tortillas, yeah?” Phil wonders, taking a large bite of food and handing over the salsa to Chayanne who was gesturing for it

“Pretty much, yes” Missa confirms with a nod “The most simple version is just eggs and tortilla, but you can add more stuff to it if you want. Like eh, nopales, chorizo, papas, fríjoles, jamón- cosas así. Or at least that's how I've learned it" He explains, waving a hand around as he talks “It's easy to make and hard to mess up, classic breakfast food.” He hums, taking a spoon of salsa for himself while Tallah reaches under him for a pancake

“So, it's like a deconstructed, chopped up breakfast taco!” Phil points out through his mouthful of food. Missa, Tallulah and Chayanne pause and stare back at him in dead silence. “What? Am I wrong??”

“No, but I still feel like I should be a little bit insulted.” Missa admits, exchanging a look between him and Tallulah who merely nods at him slowly, Chayanne shaking his head as if disappointed

“Above and Below” he snorts, using his fork to point at his kids “By the way, still haven't forgotten about your stretches.” He reminds, Chayanne and Tallulah groaning and thudding their heads on the table with a near simultaneous rattle of plates “After breakfast you're both getting them done-”

“Y podemos arreglar sus plumas también!” Missa adds cheerily, shooting a look over at Phil who cringes as the translation pops up on his board

“Fine, yes, we can preen this morning too after stretches I suppose” He grumbles, smiling a little as the dragonets perk up and warble excitedly at the idea “Afterwards, what do you guys wanna do today? Glide lessons aren't until this evening, so we have a whole day available”

“Nuevo Spawn, quizás?” Missa suggests, taking a sip of his orange juice “Podríamos recoger unas misiones juntos si quieren”

“You guys wanna head down to New Spawn and pick up some new missions?” Phil asks the kids, he and Missa laughing a little as they both enthusiastically nod “Okay then” Phil chuckles, digging into a pancake with his fork to cut up “We do stretches, some preening, get changed and head down to New Spawn for quests. How's that sound to everyone?”

“Todo bien?” Missa hums, taking a bite of food and looking over at his son pulling out a sign to scribble on “Chayanne?”

‘can we stop by the new skate park down there too?’ He requests, holding up his board hopefully

“Oh shit, there's a skate park now??” Phil exclaims, wings fluttering in excitement as Missa gasps in equal surprise, Chayanne nodding furiously

“Ah! Que divertido!!” He squeals “Un parque de patinaje! Todos tienen patineta, verdad?”

Chayanne and Tallulah both nod, tails starting to wag at the possibility of going skateboarding.

“Fuck yeah, that sounds like fun!” Phil laughs, looking over at Missa who nods eagerly in agreement “Yeah, let's all swing by the park today and skate for a bit. After breakfast though” he chides.

Chayanne and Tallulah cheer and chirp, digging into their remaining food to finish quickly in order to go change and do their morning wing stretches. Missa and Phil on the other hand simply laugh and keep eating as normal, chatting with each other and catching up as the kitchen grows brighter and brighter with the rising sun.
