Work Text:

Gaster exhaled a deep breath. “Alright..” He murmured to himself, “His name…” Gaster cleared his weird-magic-skeleton-throat and took the developing soul out of its vile. While he focused his magic on changing the label on the check file from EX-19-A to the name he had picked out, he didn’t notice Alphys running through one of the many snaking hallways leading up to the room. “Sans.” He spoke clearly, right before Alphys declared: “GASTER!! I FOUND A HATSUNE MIKU FIGURINE IN THE DUMP!!!” She shrieked, eyes sparkling. Gaster, upon hearing the name of the strange vocaloid of which many articles of merch, fanart and music tapes where discovered by him and Alphys in the dump, was snapped out of his focus, turning his head hurriedly and yelping: “MIKU!?” Right as he blurted out her name, his magic he was using on the soul broke because of his loss of focus, and he froze, processing his mistake.

Shit! ” He blurted out, turning back to the artificial monster soul which had now been named “Sans-Miku”. Gaster facepalmed with a frustrated hiss. “Ok, ugh, that’s fine, I could…probably fix it later in the development.” He placed the soul back into the chemical-filled vile. Just then, Alphys burst through the door, waving the figurine excitedly in the air. “GASTER! GASTER! I FOUND A—!!” She then promptly slipped on a puddle of previously-spilled chemicals, falling face-first into the glass side of the vile with a shriek.

Thankfully, the glass was of course durable enough not to break under her weight, Gaster had made sure it would take a whole lot more than that to even cause a crack, but unfortunately the Miku figure slipped from her claws, and fell into the vile, slowly sinking in the chemicals. “Alph!” Gaster rushed over to see if she was ok, only to realize the soul was having a reaction to the figurine.

The liquid began to froth and bubble, the figurine started to dissolve in it, and the blue tint of the soul shifted to a marble of that color and the green of Miku’s hair. Panicked and confused, Gaster quickly assessed what was going on, before running over and grasping a small beaker of bright orange mystery-chemicals. He dumped the orange into the liquid, watching as the frothing died down and Miku stopped dissolving, leaving only half of the figure intact. The thing that remained, however, was the new tint on the soul. Still panicking, the head scientist checked it.

*SANS-MIKU

*30  ATK 1 DEF

*You may have just created something…

The first thing that caught his attention was the stunning upgrade in atk stats. Then the strange message underneath. His breathing quickened as his chest heaved up and down, his knees giving way as he sunk to the floor, damaged soul pounding furiously in his ribcage. Panicked thoughts whirled through his mind like a tornado, growing larger with each second. His bones rattled softly as his figure shook. “G-Gaster!? W-what happened!? I- I- I’m s-sorry I d-didn’t mean to!-” Alphys blurted out, before noticing her companion beginning to have a panic attack. She quickly jumped to comfort him, rubbing a claw over his back in a rhythmical pattern, mumbling reassuring words.

Once he had calmed down, Gaster stood back up, face cold and straight, adjusting his glasses and walking over to his notebook filled with notes on monster souls to see if he could find anything useful. Alphys stood as well, fidgeting sheepishly with her claws. “D-doctor Gaster I- I’m really s-!” Gaster’s calm voice intervened. “You don’t need to be sorry, Alphys. It was my fault for just leaving that spill there, I should have remembered to clean it. I got distracted. This surely won’t be too much of a problem, but please allow me a moment alone, alright?” Alphys frowned at the bit about memory, wanting to argue back with the fact he couldn’t help his susceptibility to being distracted or forgetting things, something that had been a big obstacle in some of his scientific projects. But she quietly nodded and complied, still feeling incredibly guilty as she hurried away.

Once he was sure he heard the lizard exit from hearing range, Gaster slammed a fist into the table, rubbing his temple. This was not good. He had been trying to make a skeleton soul. And while it had been flawed (it had only 1 atk and 1 def,) at least it was what he had been aiming for. The pulsing spade in the vile behind him now belonged to a half-skeleton-half-vocaloid abomina—

Gaster suddenly shuddered at his thoughts, bringing himself back to reality as his back straightened and his dark expression softened. He may still have a chance in reverting what happened, and even if he didn’t, the monster that soul would belong to would never be an abomination. That monster shared his DNA, he created it, it was its caregiver, its father .

However…

He looked down at his intact hand, eyes tracing over a circle in his palm, the same shape as the chunk of his other he had carved out for the DNA he needed.

…Maybe he should make a backup.
