Looks

Summary:

There was nothing wrong in those moments. There were no chases, no wars; he had everything he needed, even a woman by his side. No, that was the problem. He didn't want that woman; he wanted that dark-skinned girl with whom he could only exchange secret glances.

Looks

.

When will someone notice their glances?

There he was, standing by the window, observing as he did time and time again.

His eyes focused intently on the figure descending from that bison he had pursued for years, across skies, seas, and lands.

But now, things were different.

There was no chase, no war, nothing wrong in his life—or there shouldn't be anything wrong. How could there be? He was the Fire Lord, commanding the respect of his people, with a woman by his side.

No, that was the problem.

He didn't want the woman he had by his side.

He wanted that dark-skinned woman gracefully descending from that bison.

He needed her like an addiction; he couldn't go an hour without thinking about her. Every small excuse to move from where he was, whether it was for her to come to his lands or for him to go to hers, was gladly accepted by him.

Why couldn't he have her for himself?

Oh, right, she was his best friend's woman.

It was almost laughable.

He finally had everything he wanted in his life! But no, he had to become infatuated with a woman he couldn't have. He longed to mix water with fire, though he couldn't do it.

And the worst part?

Everyone except Aang was aware of what was happening.

Sokka, Toph—even his wife—they had all noticed the glances they exchanged when they saw each other. Sokka had almost throttled him when he found out how they looked at each other. Toph hadn't commented, though he was sure she wished to be the one to console Aang when he found out.

Maybe Aang had actually noticed and preferred to turn a blind eye to the fact.

The attraction, desire, and… love that emerged when they met were all too obvious.

How did it happen?

He had no idea.

It just happened, without him realizing it, that whirlwind of water had surrounded his heart and never left. It came like a wave of softness that made him feel a warmth he couldn't recall ever experiencing, not even with Mei.

And there he was, masochistically, heading towards the doors of the place where they would be received with a fake smile, cursing himself inwardly not to run and snatch her away in front of everyone. Greeting them, he pretended nothing was happening.

During the day, he managed to bear her presence and not rush to capture her in his arms, even with Aang present between them.

However, on that rainy night—like all the nights they were close by then—their eyes sought each other in the darkness that only lovers know perfectly, that darkness that concealed them from the sinful truth.

Would they ever be together without hiding what they felt? Would they speak the truth to love each other?

Perhaps one day they would have the courage to do so.

For now, they only had their glances.
