He’d only heard of them in old tales told around a fire in the dead of night when the orphans had nothing else to do with their time. The fictitious stories were initially created by parents in an attempt to keep their children from wandering alone at night, but the whispers bled into the groups of slum-dwelling kids.
None of them knew that those creatures from their stories were as real as the flame that kept them warm when the bitter cold tried to strip them of life.
