The Gift is the Food, Love

Summary:

After Shadow makes him and Sonic chili dogs as a surprise dinner, Sonic wants to do the same, though, he could be a better cook.

Notes:

Hello! I haven't been active that much in the Sonadow community (mostly because I'm not really into the ship or Sonic that much at the moment), but I had this in my drive for a while.

Originally, this was supposed to be the beginning of my previous fanfiction "Beauty is Pain" but I decided to cut it out entirely. This was written in May of 2022, so I have not made many edits to it and will not be. I just wanted to post this to post something.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading!

Work Text:

Sonic had told Shadow he’d visit Tails to see how he’s been doing. So, Shadow's been at the house he now shared with Sonic and rested on the couch. He flipped through channels, trying to decide what he'd want to watch. It was boring without Sonic. No one to tell him the most foolish statements, or to wrap his slim arms around the ebony hedgehog’s waist. It’s only been a few hours and Shadow was already missing the blue blur's touch.

In the evening, Shadow was stirring up some food for Sonic and him. He thought he should gift his blue hedgehog a special treat. Shadow was making chili dogs, extra good just for Sonic. He finished cooking the chili and boiled some hotdogs. He grabbed the hotdog buns and placed the hotdog and chili into the bun. He then placed the food on a plate and set the dinner plate on the dining table. As he sat down and started eating his chili dog (which he liked, but not as much as Sonic), he heard the front door squeak open.

“Huh? What’s that smell? Is that chili dogs?” Sonic questioned as he ran to the kitchen and hopped on the dining chair. He rubbed his hands together as his tongue stuck out.

“I see someone is excited to be home,” chuckled Shadow. The ebony hedgehog rarely smiled, but he couldn't contain it when he was with Sonic. Sonic just made him so happy, no matter if he was feeling down.

“You made these for me, Shadow?” Sonic asked with a big smile as he looked into his ruby eyes, sparkling with happiness.

The ebony hedgehog smiled lightly, “Of course I did. I wanted to make your arrival home special.” The blue blur smiled as he dug in his food. Soon enough, he finished, putting his hand on his stomach. “Oh man, Shads. You know how to make the best chili dogs,” said the cobalt hedgehog as he grabbed his plate and placed it in the sink.

Shadow smirked, “One of the best?” Sonic took Shadow’s hands, saying, “You know I mean well.”

Shadow lightly chuckled as he released Sonic’s hands. “You must be tired, Sonic. You should head to bed,” suggested the striped hedgehog.

Sonic winked, “Only if you come with me.”

Shadow awoke the next morning, the other side of the bed feeling cold and empty. He fluttered open his eyes and saw that Sonic was not there. He sat up from the bed and hopped off. Sonic must have gotten up before him. The ebony hedgehog made his way downstairs, where he saw Sonic struggling to make something that didn’t even look edible.

Snooping behind the blue hedgehog, his voice breaks Sonic’s trance of thought, “What are you doing? More importantly, what are you making?”

Startling Sonic, he whips his head around and sees Shadow, arms crossed and looking at him in confusion, “Jeez, Shadow! You scared the living chaos out of me!” once he caught his breath, he continued, “It’s a surprise!” he concludes.

Shadow raised an eyebrow, he expects me to eat that? “Fine, I’ll be waiting in the dining room.”

A few moments later the blue hedgehog makes his way to the dining table, a plate in both hands. The abominations on the plates were smoking, black, and smelt deadly.

“Sorry if it’s not the best… I tried to make something you’d like, but I’m really only good at making chili dogs…” chuckled Sonic, placing the food in front of Shadow.

Shakily, Shadow took his fork and slowly dug in. It tasted burnt and dry and he could feel his stomach fight against him, “This is…” he paused, looking at Sonic, then back to his dish, “great…” he said with a worried smile.

Sonic looked right through his disguise, “I know you’re lying, Shads. But it’s okay! It does taste horrible.”

Shadow got up, and paused for a second before he lifted Sonic’s chin and kissed him, “You taste better, love.”
