Work Text:
Aizawa thought Hizashi was annoying.
His new classmate, Jin Bubaigawara, alias Twice, was as energetic as his two friends. He was a transfer student, or at least that’s what their teacher told them. He seemed defensive about his past and his family, but that was unimportant.
At least, compared to his personality.
“Aizawa.” He whispered and tapped on his shoulder. “Can I have a pen?” Aizawa definitely did not want to give him a pen that would inevitably disappear in a day. This guy just- waltzes in in the middle of the school year. They weren’t even the same age! Then Hizashi and Oboro just had to be his friend immediately.
“This is my last pen.” He hissed, glaring at the blonde behind him. He was surprised that his quirk didn’t activate with the force of the glare. Bubaigawara looked hurt, before looking back down at his paper.
Aizawa didn’t feel bad. Why would he feel bad for not giving someone his stuff? He didn’t need to help his new classmate just because his friends liked him.
And yet, he felt guilty. Maybe it was the sad look on his face.
He would talk later. This was an important lesson.
“Hey! Shouta, my man!”
He could feel his eyes twitching. His friend’s voice was ear-grating. “I’m busy with homework.” He sighed. He wouldn’t be doing homework for much longer.
“Me, Shirakumo, and Jin are going to the arcade, and you’re coming with us!” Hizashi’s loud voice echoed into his room, shattering his eardrums. One of Hizashi’s evil tactics for dragging him into his schemes.
“Ugh, fine. Just stop screaming.” He sighed, standing up and walking out of his room. Almost running into his friends and Jin when he left. He couldn’t resist giving Jin a side-eye for just existing near his only friends.
“Do we have to bring him with?”
“Shouta, don’t be rude!” Oboro huffed.
“I’m just saying, he probably has a lot of things to catch up on. Considering he’s younger and new to school.”
“I-I mean, he has a point.” Bubaigawara’s gray-blue eyes flicker nervously between the other three. “And- plus, I don’t got money for coins.”
“..Whaddya mean? Can’t you just ask your parents?” Oboro asked, tilting his head curiously and slipping his hand into his pockets.
“...” Bubaigawara became quiet, staring off into the distance as he stopped walking. His eyes unfocused.
“..You good, man?” Hizashi shook the other blonde’s shoulders. “He isn’t responding. Hey- Hey, wake up!”
Aizawa knew what was happening. His classmate’s breathing was much faster, shallower. His hands were shaking, his cheeks were flushed, and he was shivering. He wished it wasn’t Bubaigawara, for he didn’t actually want to help him. But he knew what he had to do. “Oboro.”
“Yeah?”
“Go get the school nurse. Hizashi, help me get him back to the school as quickly and gently as possible.” He directed calmly, putting his hand around Bubaigawara’s shoulder. Hizashi got the message and put his arm around the other shoulder so they could support him.
Oboro was long gone by the time they were near the building. Shouta could feel the heat and sweat on the (less violently yellow) blonde he was escorting. It was a panic attack all right. The rise and fall of his chest was too short and too small to be normal.
“Hizashi, this might be hard for you, but you have to be as quiet as possible. He probably finds your voice more comforting than mine. But be quiet.” He whispered. He knew that Jin probably didn’t like his voice, at least with all the things he’s said to him.
Wait, did he just call him Jin-
Before he could overthink any further, Oboro rushed out of the building with the school nurse. Recovery girl quickly helped the two boys with Jin into her office.
“Shoo, you three! I have to help him in silence.” She pushed the boys into the hallway before (quietly) slamming the door in their faces.
“...Damn, that was..” Oboro rubbed his neck. “I feel guilty. I mean- I’m the one who brought up his parents. That was the cause, right?” He looked down.
“Panic attacks can happen from other stimuli, don’t blame yourself.” Aizawa said, patting Oboro on the back. “It could’ve been from a variety of other things. Sometimes it could just be from the weather. And it doesn’t help anyone by blaming.”
It took a week before Jin came back to class. He would’ve gotten flooded with homework if Recovery Girl didn’t point out the fact that it would make everything worse. He was distant for a while, until Aizawa popped into his room to check on him.
“...Bubaigawara?” He called. He found it weird how his classmate lived in the school, but he never knew the opportunity to ask.
“You can come in.” Bubaigawara called back. He seemed busy with homework, but his desk was..messy. Unorganized. Aizawa’s eye twitched when he saw it, but he made no comment.
“Are you okay?” He walked into Bubaigawara’s room, sitting down on his bed. It was squishy and comfy. But it would be terrible for a back..
“Eh. Okay as I’ll ever be. I feel like I owe you an explanation-”
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to. I don’t want to pressure you.”
“Oh. Okay. You’re a good friend, Aizawa.” His gray-blue eyes shone with appreciation.
“You can call me Shouta.” Aizawa said, so soft he could barely hear himself.
“...Then you can call me Jin.” He smiled, closing his eyes.
And Aizawa supposed, maybe, he didn’t hate his guts so much anymore.
(Maybe just a bit, though.)
