Work Text:
Lena is typing rigorously at her computer. Codes, keywords and whatnot. It's her first day back in Kara's circle. At least if she counts being in the presence of National City's heroes. Still can't believe she gets to meet Dreamer for the first time. Or at least facing Nia as Dreamer. Facing everyone actually.
She was staring at another dead end on the monitor when she let her mind daydream about the day's occurrence.
Early morning she went to Kara's place begging. The entire group agreeing on a ruse, which leads her to have another alone time with Kara on a bus and in her lab. The agony of sitting next to each other but so far apart was such a blow. Topping with Kara finally blowing on her a few hours later, Lena sighed.
"Working late. I see nothing's changed." Lena jumped slightly in her seat. She turned to the source of the voice and saw Kara in her casual house clothing.
"At least now I know how you always sneak up on me." Lena exhaled a breath she didn't know she was holding since beholding Kara at yet again another alone time together.
"Thinking about where to attach a bell on me?" Kara quipped. The blonde places both hands on her hips. Doing a Supergirl pose outside the suit still made Lena gasped.
She turned back to her computer attempting to hide a blush. Lena knows Kara heard that gasp and she needs to stop her heart from pounding or it will be a dead giveaway to Kara.
"We now both know that that would hurt your superhearing, darling." By the time Lena caught herself she already uttered it.
This time she wasn't able to stop her heart from hammering. Do something. Do something. She thought to herself. Lena reached for her mouse and tried to toggle around her opened tabs, when she felt a hand gripping her wrist.
"Stop."
Of course, Kara would just materialize right next to her in a blink. "Stop what?" If Kara points out her racing heart, she'll reason that she's scared she's done something against Kara.
"This and let's go home," Kara answered referring to the monitor.
Home. Such a peculiar word. Lena bowed unable to say what was on her mind.
"You know I consider my lab more as my home than anything, right?" She joked but seeing Kara's pursed lips she relented. "I have one more lead to follow then I'm good to go. Thank you for checking in though." Lena reached for Kara's gripping hand with her free one. Gave it a squeeze before trying to lift it off her wrist. But the super tightened her grip.
"Remember when I'd jokingly threatened you that I'll have you on my shoulder whenever you're overworking?"
"Yeah," Lena answered sheepishly.
"I was serious."
"Kara, you did not just come down here to tell me that." Lena smiled. There was no malice in her voice. She just genuinely believed that it takes more than a one-day help to be back on Kara's good grace.
Without a word, the Kryptonian shifted her hand to Lena's back knee while the other reached for her arm. Shoulders touching her stomach.
"Okay, okay. I'll go. I'll continue this tomorrow." Lena giggled masking her slight panic at Kara's action.
The Kryptonian relented and stood before her. Lena's smile faltered upon realizing their close proximity. Feeling Kara's warm hand on her thigh, their faces a few inches apart.
She saw her once best friend's gaze lowered. "Hey," Kara said when she met her eyes.
"Hey," Lena whispered.
"Uhm." Lena cleared her throat, drawing her head back. "I'll get my coat then I'll go my way."
"There aren't any buses anymore."
Lena chuckled, "Buses aren't the only mode of transport, sweetheart." Another nickname. Lena is now mentally slapping herself.
"You're right. There are other modes of transport."
Kara backed away and the brunette missed the warmth right off. But she sighed her frustrations away. She stood and made her way to where her coat was.
Lena can feel Kara's intense gaze at her every move. Who was she kidding? Of course, the super will keep a close eye on her. Lena distracts herself by checking her coat pockets for her wallet and phone. Upon confirming, she put the coat on.
As soon as she does the super is already right next to her.
"Kara, I'm going. No need to wait for me." She chuckled.
"I know you well enough that you'll do a quick detour in your office." Kara crossed her arms.
"I take that as a no-no?" Lena again joked. But Kara not smiling at her attempt humor this whole time clenched her heart. She fished out her phone instead. "Look I'll book an Uber now so even with a detour I'll be sure to get out of here." She said without looking up from her phone.
But before she could open the app, Kara snatched her phone away. Under normal circumstances, Lena would right off reach out to take it back. But this is Kara so the chances of her getting it back is only if her former best friend will hand it back.
"No Uber. I'll take you home."
"And will you tuck me in bed too?" Lena didn't help herself and quipped another joke.
"I can do that too," Kara answered seriously.
"Right. I get it. You're not in the mood for jokes. That will be my last one." She smiled. "I'm ready." Kara scooped her bridal style, making her yelp. "When I said I'm ready I meant—"
But Lena was interrupted when Kara captured her lips. It was chaste and quick but it still left her breathless.
"You talk too much."
They were in an underground lab but Kara continued to carry her till they could take off. Lena was silent the whole time, distracted. When Kara set her down that's when she realized where the hero took her.
"Wha—" looking around the cozy loft.
I did say I'm taking you home." Kara says. "Unless you want me to bring you to your penthouse."
"Are you sure you want me to stay here?" Lena asked avoiding Kara's eyes by looking around.
"I brought you here." Kara shrugged.
"You flew without your suit." Lena pointed as she took off her coat.
"I don't need it."
Lena walks towards the rack, still avoiding eye contact and hangs her coat. "I just thought you'd need your cape for aerodynamics."
She meets the super's gaze.
"You're good enough." The blonde stated giving her an intent look. "Just place your shoes in one of those racks while I'll get you some clothes." The blonde did not wait for her to answer.
Lena just finished removing her shoes when Kara came back and handed her some comfier clothes. She resisted bringing the clothes to her nose to smell it. Instead, Lena makes a beeline to Kara's bedroom.
"Lena, am I imposing?" Kara called out.
"Kara no. In fact, I should be the one asking that. We just resumed talking this morning. I know I'm not forgiven yet." She trailed.
"I meant what I said earlier but—"
"But what?"
"Look I just don't want you to walk on eggshells here and to our friends. I know we still have a lot to work and sort through but I want this as a start."
It took a moment before Lena could respond. "Y-yeah right. I mean you're right." It wasn't like her to fumble on her words but here she is.
Kara sighed. "Just say the word and I'll bring you to your apartment."
"I haven't said the word, Kara. And you could have just brought me to my penthouse in the first place. The fact that you brought me here tells me that somehow you want me here."
"You sound like you don't believe it." Kara pointed.
"Because you can't—"
"But I do!" Kara raised her voice. "—want you here." The super exhaled. "I want you." She folded her arms and looked away.
"Kara—"
"Is it about being here or was it about the kiss?" Lena's eyes widened.
"It's actually more about being here, to be honest." She rumbled. "The kiss was just the cherry on top."
"Look I had it all planned out in my mind. I get you out of your office. I bring you here for a sleepover like old times. I confessed that I'm in love with you in the sunrise. I've been in love with you. But I couldn't resist and kissed you."
"Sunrise?"
"For a new day. New beginnings. And that's your takeaway?" Kara threw her hands in the air. "Those dorky cheesy stuff. "
"Dorky cheesy stuff." Lena chuckled. Her fingers fidget with the folded clothes in her hands. "Those are some of the things I love about you." She smiled.
Kara's face lit up, "N—not the f-friend kind?" She stuttered.
"The more than friend kind." The brunette nodded. "Kara, I reacted the way I did because I trusted you and have always been true to you. And I thought we have this thing going on and I was just about to tell you what I feel for you but turns out I don't know you. I don't know the person that I fell in love with. Or was she even true at all?"
"It's all true— I mean minus the excuses whenever I need to run or cancel— some of them are true by the way. I'm rambling. What I'm trying to say is, I've never been more me when I'm with you. Being Supergirl is just a small part of me—" but she stop when Lena gave her a look. "Okay, it was big since it's my whole being as an alien that I'm hiding. But my love and everything that I have shown you are real, Lena. And I'll continue to do so minus the secrets from here on out."
"Okay."
"Okay? Like we're giving this a chance okay?"
"Yes, Kara."
The blonde closed her eyes, balled her fists and started squealing. When her eyes opened and saw Lena smiling, looking at her intently, she cleared her throat.
She reached for her glasses, "Look, we still have lots of work to do."
"A lot." Lena nodded.
"And baggages to unpack."
"Especially from me who never worries about luggage weights."
"But you will come to me and tell me no matter how ugly the words will."
"Then I guess it's a good thing we're both beautiful."
The two women laugh.
"Look," Kara cleared her throat, "I love you and I mean it."
"I love you too," Lena whispered.
"And I'm sorry for kissing you earlier without your permission but I'm not sorry for the kiss."
Lena's brow rose, "Sorry not sorry?"
"I know right?" Kara replied while walking towards the brunette who in turn took a step back. Lena clutched the clothes to her chess when her back hit the back of Kara's couch.
The blonde steps closer and places both her hands on either side of her caging her. "Would you allow me to not need to ask permission to kiss you?" She leaned closer.
"A free rein to kiss me." Lena smiled.
"That and then some." When their faces were a few centimeters apart, "My girl no-space friend and my girl space friend again."
"Yes and always." Lena bridges the remaining gap and kisses her friend and now lover.
