Chapter Text
Something had gone amiss.
Gwen couldn’t figure it out. It was weird. Everything in her life had been going swimmingly. Her job as a front desk receptionist in New Jersey couldn't be better. Love life included.
So what exactly was the problem?
“Is it because you’re approaching the big 3.0 in two weeks?” Miles G. curiously asks, and Gwen gives a dramatic gasp at his blunt insensitivity. He raises both hands up, defensively. “Sorry, I mean, typically, that's what women freak out about when they’re having a midlife crisis.”
“No, not every woman.” Gwen huffs, leaning back, arms folded. “You’re supposed to be giving me advice here.”
“It's kind of hard for me to give my future sister-in-law advice when I don't know what is bugging her.”
“Like I told you, I feel that something in my life has been missing ever since Margo got married, and I don’t know why.” Gwen takes a bite of her burger. “Or because I am turning thirty in two weeks.”
Miles G. chimes in with an ‘I told you so’ and receives a pat on the shoulder. He looks up. “Sup bro.”
“Sup.” His twin brother gives a nod of acknowledgement. Miles’s eyes fall on Gwen. “Hey, babe.”
“Hey you.” Gwen greets, flirtatiously, then eyes the box in his hands. “Burger and fries?”
“Join the club,” replied Miles G., dipping a fry in ketchup. Miles, in the middle of about to take a seat, is surprised to see Gwen stand up from where she’s sitting. A smirk forms on Miles G.’s lips, still dipping, knowing what’s coming. “And here we go.”
“Shut it,” Miles orders, and his twin laughs, devouring his french fry. He and Gwen have been dating for five straight months, and everything felt organic—so natural to the point where they didn’t mind showcasing public displays of affection out in public. Lundale District was no exception because the three of them enjoyed shopping downtown, including other shoppers. Some people walking past their table gave choruses of ‘awww’ or jealous, single people passing by gave input of how lucky the two were to be so affectionate with so many people around. Gwen sat in Miles’s lap, like always, as they happily conversed.
Then it’s the siblings turn to talk.
“I can’t figure it out either, bro. I've tried—Oh, wait, it's my wife calling.” Even though he tried to hide his enthusiasm, Miles could see it all over his brother’s face. His face lit up as he answered the phone call, motioning that he’d be right back to the both of them, walking off where it was less loud.
“So, what’s on your mind, babe?” He looks up at Gwen. She meets his gaze. “Is it about your birthday?”
“No, it’s not that at all. I just feel like something is missing in my life, Miles.”
“Do you know what that is?”
“No, and that is what is frustrating me.” She sighed. “You have no idea how much, Miles.”
“Don’t worry, babe, it’ll come to you.” Miles pecks her left cheek. “And when you do figure out what it is bothering you, you can tell me, okay?”
She nods, plants a kiss on his lips, and smiles. “You know what, Morales? I think I’ll keep you around.”
Miles chuckles. “Really? I was going to say the same thing about you.”
Her arms encircled his neck. “Were you now?”
Miles bit his lower lip, setting it free as his girlfriend’s lips eagerly met his own.
“I’m back!” Miles G. declares, causing the two to separate. He retakes his seat. “Margo says hi, by the way.”
The two smile at the little, sweet friendly gesture.
As the three continued eating and conversing over each other, Gwen was still trying to figure out what it was she was missing.
But when she looks at Miles, it seems as if nothing is missing in the first place.
Only time will tell.
In the meantime, she had a burger to eat and a sweet man to unhealthily kiss.
