4/16/47. 13:56. LIFEPOD 7.
[START OF RECORDING.]
MAYA: Hello? H-Hello? This is Lifepod 7, deployed from the Aurora. Can anyone hear me? Is this signal reaching any other human beings?
HINATA: (in the background) Maya.
MAYA: Please, please someone be alive. We're hurt, we don't– I don't know what to do. Please!
HINATA: Maya!
MAYA: Just... (a brief sniffle) take it.
HINATA: Help Chisa. Her head is bleeding.
(Shuffling around is heard as MAYA walks away from the radio, tending to CHISA.)
HINATA: This is Lifepod 7, deployed from the Aurora approximately 2 hours ago. We are stranded in... what looks like an oceanic environment. If any other Lifepods landed safely, please send back a signal if you receive this message.
[END OF RECORDING.]
4/16/47. 17:20. LIFEPOD 3.
[START OF RECORDING.]
JURIA: ...Hello? Hina? Are you still there?
(Feedback whines immediately as LIFEPOD 7 answers the signal, joining the channel.)
HINATA: Juria? Oh– oh my god. You're okay?
JURIA: Hey. (A sniff, and a half-hearted giggle.) Are you alright? Who made it?
HINATA: Maya and Chisa. I'm okay. It's cramped in here. (She pauses.) Is anyone in there with you?
JURIA: (It's clear that she's been crying.) Jurin, Jurin was here, but she... left. She said she was going to try to find you guys.
(HINATA is silent.)
JURIA: She's not coming back, is she? Oh, oh. I'm gonna– (She whimpers, taking a sharp breath in.)
HINATA: Hey, hey. Listen to me.
JURIA: (Sobbing) I'm gonna– I'm gonna die all alone, Hina.
HINATA: Listen to me! You're not gonna die. I'll have Chisa sit up top to look out for Jurin, and you'll be alright. Stay in your pod and you'll be fine, okay?
(JURIA doesn't respond. Her crying grows louder.)
HINATA: Juria. Talk to me.
JURIA: (Her voice shakes as she speaks.) Stay in my pod, and I'll be fine?
HINATA: Yes. We'll keep looking out for Jurin. I promise. (She sounds on the verge of tears.)
JURIA: ...Will you stay with me, Hina?
HINATA: Of course. (She sniffs.) Of course I will.
[END OF RECORDING.]
4/17/47. 6:01. LIFEPOD 7.
[START OF RECORDING.]
HINATA: Juria.
(A brief silence, and then a crackle as JURIA picks up her end.)
JURIA: Hinata?
HINATA: Jurin is here. She... she got hurt, but she's here. We'll try to get to you soon, okay?
JURIA: You got her?
HINATA: We got her.
JURIA: Thank goodness.
(HINATA is silent.)
JURIA: Hina?
HINATA: I have something to tell you but I don't wanna freak you out.
JURIA: (After a pause.) Just tell me.
HINATA: The PDA said we're gonna be stuck here unless we can somehow fabricate the escape rocket. Even then, it's gonna be... a while.
JURIA: So, what you're saying is I'm gonna starve to death. In this pod. Alone.
HINATA: Ria...
JURIA: No. Don't lie to me. Don't try to make me feel better 'cause– (She takes a breath in, her pitch going higher and breathing becoming quicker with hysteria.) 'Cause you know it's true. I'm gonna die.
HINATA: We're gonna find you before that, I–
JURIA: Don't. Don't promise it.
HINATA: Then I don't promise. But we'll find you. I'll find you.
JURIA: You don't know that.
HINATA: I do. Jurin said she tried to keep track of where the pod was when she left, and the PDA gave us an approximate but you're pretty far out. If you ration the nutrient blocks in there, you'll be fine.
JURIA: Okay. (A deep intake of breath.) Okay.
HINATA: Maybe take a nap? Its been awhile since you've slept.
JURIA: I'll try.
HINATA: Good. Just ring the radio again when you wake up.
JURIA: Bye bye, Hina.
HINATA: Bye Juria.
[END OF RECORDING.]
4/20/47. 12:34. LIFEPOD 7.
[START OF RECORDING.]
CHISA: Juria. Hey, Juria?
JURIA: Chisa? Where's Hinata?
CHISA: She's asleep.
JURIA: Oh.
CHISA: I just wanted to talk to you. I'll leave you alone, if you want.
JURIA: No. I miss you. I miss all of you. I'm scared, Chisa.
CHISA: (A sigh.) I know, I know. We're trying. Hinata hasn't slept in days because she's been so worried about you.
JURIA: ...Oh.
CHISA: I know you and I know that tone. Don't feel guilty. It's not your fault our ship crashed onto some foreign fuckin' planet.
JURIA: (She laughs, clearly bittersweet.) When you say it out loud, it sounds silly.
CHISA: It does, doesn't it?
(A brief silence settles.)
JURIA: Chisa?
CHISA: Hm?
JURIA: If we don't see each other again, I want you to know I've always looked up to you.
CHISA: Don't think like that. I'll see you soon.
JURIA: I just– I want you to know. You're an important part of my life... and I'll always be grateful for you.
CHISA: (She exhales heavily.) I'm grateful for you too. Stay positive, yeah? I'm gonna go scout while Hinata sleeps. Signal if you need anything, okay?
JURIA: Yeah, okay. Bye bye.
CHISA: Goodbye.
[END OF RECORDING.]
4/22/47. 23:08. LIFEPOD 3.
[START OF RECORDING.]
JURIA: Hello?
HINATA: Ria. Everything okay?
JURIA: I just feel like I'm starting to go crazy. I wanted to hear someone's voice.
HINATA: Oh, okay.
JURIA: Have you... have you made any progress on finding me?
(HINATA swallows.)
JURIA: I guess not, huh? (She laughs and it sounds anything but joyful.)
HINATA: We'll find you.
JURIA: ...Do you even believe that, Hina?
HINATA: I– I do.
JURIA: (She breathes out heavy enough for the radio to pick up.) I guess I'll try to, too.
HINATA: Jurin is out right now, she's over near the crash site. There's rough stuff out there.
JURIA: I can't even see the site. That's bad, isn't it?
HINATA: You can't be too far. You're close enough to pick up signal from, so you can't be more than a mile or two.
JURIA: I guess that's true. (Her breath is loud and shaky.) I'm sorry. I'm trying to be optimistic, I'm just... scared. I also might be a little hangry.
HINATA: How much do you have left?
JURIA: Umm. (Brief rustling.) Half a block? And two bottles of water. I'm trying to make it last, but I don't think it will.
HINATA: It will. We'll get to you before it doesn't.
JURIA: Yeah.
(Silence.)
HINATA: Will you sing for me?
JURIA: What?
HINATA: I haven't heard you sing in a while. Maybe it will take your mind off of hunger.
JURIA: I guess I could. What song?
HINATA: Anything. Long as it's you.
JURIA: Alright.
(JURIA clears her throat and begins to sing. HINATA is quiet.)
JURIA: (To the tune of 'She Will Be Loved' by Maroon 5.)
I don't mind spending every day
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay a while
And she will be loved, she will be loved
HINATA: I love that song.
JURIA: I know. (She pauses.) Thank you for asking me to sing. I... didn't realize how much I missed it.
HINATA: Yeah. I'll signal you in a little bit, okay? Jurin just got back.
JURIA: Okay. Bye, Hi-chan.
HINATA: Bye, Juria.
[END OF RECORDING.]
4/24/47. 14:34. LIFEPOD 7.
[START OF RECORDING.]
HINATA: Juria!
JURIA: Hey. (Her tone is sluggish.)
HINATA: We just got a message, it's from a cargo ship thats passing by. I guess they received our distress signal, they're gonna touch down to rescue us.
JURIA: We're going home?
HINATA: We're going home.
JURIA: I'm happy. I'm so sleepy, Hina. And hungry.
HINATA: Do you still have rations?
JURIA: Just a little bit. It hurts so much, but I'm trying to make it last.
HINATA: That's good.
JURIA: (Her breathing sounds uneven.) I miss you, Hinata.
HINATA: I– I miss you too. I'll see you very soon. We're going home, yeah?
JURIA: I just want you to hold me. Like you always do.
HINATA: (She sniffs, and her voice quivers as she speaks.) I know. I want to hold you, Ria, I do. I will soon, okay? Get some rest, I'll signal you when the ship is here, I promise.
JURIA: Okay.
HINATA: Goodnight, Juria.
JURIA: Night night.
[END OF RECORDING.]
4/25/47. 14:56. LIFEPOD 3.
[START OF RECORDING.]
JURIA: (Frantically.) Hinata? What was that boom? Hello? Hello?
HINATA: Hey, Juria.
JURIA: What was that loud noise, Hina?
HINATA: It was, uh. (She swallows.)
JURIA: What? Tell me.
HINATA: Something hit the cargo ship that was coming for rescue. It went down.
JURIA: Went down? What does that mean?
HINATA: (Her breath quivers.) They can't save us, Ria.
JURIA: (After a pause.) I'm dying.
HINATA: No, no–
JURIA: It's already happening, Hinata. Everyday I feel worse and worse, and I'm just– I'm scared. (She sobs.) I'm so scared. I want you here. I don't want to die.
HINATA: No, you won't. You won't die. We've gotten closer, Jurin and Maya said they could see a pod in the distance the further they swam but, it's not easy. There's things out there that are hard to get by.
(JURIA's muffled cries can still be heard.)
JURIA: I miss you. I just want you, Hina. I'm scared.
HINATA: (She sniffs.) I'm right here. When I see you, I'll hold you as long as you want. We'll go home, and I'll hold you as long as you want. I promise.
JURIA: O-okay.
HINATA: Okay?
JURIA: Yeah.
HINATA: Hold on for me. Ring us later.
JURIA: I'll try.
HINATA: Thank you. (She hesitates for a moment.) You'll be okay. Bye, Juria.
JURIA: ...Bye.
[END OF RECORDING.]
4/25/47. 1:49. LIFEPOD 7.
[START OF RECORDING.]
HINATA: Juria.
(No response.)
HINATA: Juria? Come in?
JURIA: (Her voice is weak.) Hina.
HINATA: Are you okay? How much more do you have to ration?
JURIA: I'm out.
HINATA: What?
JURIA: I'm out of food. I'm out of water.
(HINATA doesn't respond.)
JURIA: This is the part where you tell me I'm not dying, even though we both know.
HINATA: You'll be okay. Jurin got closer. She did.
JURIA: Okay.
HINATA: You believe me, don't you?
JURIA: Everything hurts, Hina. I'm... tired.
HINATA: When was the last time you drank? When did you run out?
JURIA: Hm. A few days ago, I think.
HINATA: You didn't tell me? (She sounds frantic.)
JURIA: I didn't want to worry you anymore. I don't like it when you're anxious.
HINATA: Fuck, Juria!
JURIA: Please, don't yell at me. (Her voice quivers.) I don't feel good. Please don't be mean, Hi-chan.
HINATA: I'm sorry, I'm– I didn't mean to. (She's crying. It's clear.) I'm not mad at you. I just...
JURIA: You'll be okay. You have Chisa, and Jurin. You'll make it home.
HINATA: No, no, I'm not going. I won't go without you.
JURIA: Hina.
HINATA: I won't! You're gonna be fine, we're gonna go together, and– (Her rambling breaks off into full-on sobs.)
JURIA: (On the contrast, her voice is oddly calm but faint.) Hinata, listen.
HINATA: W-what?
JURIA: I love you. I always have, I always will. I'll.. I'll be there when you get home, okay?
HINATA: (She sniffles.) Can I sneak into your bed? Like we always do?
JURIA: (Her laugh is weak.) Of course.
(The line is silent for a moment.)
JURIA: I'm tired, Hinata... I think I'm going to sleep for a little bit.
HINATA: (Another sob.) Okay.
JURIA: Bye bye, Hina. I love you.
HINATA: I love you more. I always will. (She pauses.) Goodnight, Juria.
