Summary
Once he had been a boy on a mountain covered in whispering green grasses, and his teacher had told him that every person was born with darkness inside them, as well as light. When he had asked why, she had said there was no why—there was only what was good in him: the bright flare of his seedling core, and what was evil: the dark poison that would try to choke it out.
To be a cultivator was to be strong enough, to be good enough, to beat back the dark again and again. To meet it with light whenever it rose. To spend a life at war with all the wicked parts of yourself.
