Introducing: our Saturday Scones.

A few years ago, as our family was evolving, we tried out all manner of group activities to see if we could start some new traditions. While some of these were unequivocal failures (looking at you, karaoke night), I am pleased to say that several of these attempts have stood the test of time: our bi-monthly family quidditch matches still manage to rile up some friendly competition, we do annual plimpy fishing with Aunt Luna, we almost always manage a monthly movie night, and we regularly make family trips to Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour to indulge in their newest, delectable flavours!

Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour has been a cornerstone of Diagon Alley since 1510! Come celebrate our 500th year of business this summer with brand new summer flavours and all your favourites! Get a half-price second scoop all summer long!

We love all our new traditions, but none have had nearly the success of Saturday Scones.

There has not been a scone-less Saturday for our family in the nearly two years since the very first time I woke up with a keen desire to bake some scones.

I do think, if I were to not make our Saturday Scones, there would be an uprising (or a lot of groaning from my husband and children at the very least).

Speaking of rising up, the new Firebolt 7000 leaves all other brooms in the dust! Advanced charmwork and sleek, firequill bristles mean this deluxe broom knows your movements before you make them! Feel the wind beneath you like never before and kick off with a brand new Firebolt 7000!

We serve these delectable scones with homemade clotted cream, blackberry jam, and lemon curd— all recipes I’ve been through previously on this blog and are linked below. I like to put out fresh fruit as well. And bacon. (Although the bacon isn’t for the scones— it’s just that Albus won’t even show up to breakfast if there is no bacon.)

Technically, these scones can be made in advance to save time, but I cannot in good conscience recommend it. Stasis spells only keep breads from going stale for so long. Besides, making them fresh the morning of is part of the experience (and also a good way to rouse any late sleepers in your home!)

Alternatively, preparing in advance is exactly what you want to do for the new Daydream Elixir from Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, lest you get caught daydreaming at your ministry desk, at tea with your in-laws, or even in class! Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes would never condone the use of our new Daydream Elixir- SWEET DREAMS in any of the aforementioned scenarios. 5 minutes of truly magical daydreams with every sip of our enchanting Elixir!

And now, without further ado, the recipe!

Cinnamon Scones

Prep time: 20 minutes
Bake time: 10-15 minutes
This recipe makes 8 scones.

Recommend equipment:

Mixing bowl and spoon (self-stirring if you’ve got it!)
Baking tray
Oven
Cooling rack
6 cm round cutter

Ingredients:

350g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt (a generous pinch!)
100g caster sugar (you can halve this if you don’t have a husband with a sweet tooth like mine) [see Editor’s Note]
20g Ground Cinnamon
90g butter, cubed
150 ml buttermilk
Optional: Honey to brush over the baked scones for a sweet glaze

Steps:

Preheat oven to 200/C
Sift the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt into a large mixing bowl
Add butter and use your fingertips to rub together the mixture until it resembles fine crumbs

Stir in sugar.
If you like to add dried fruit to your scones, do that now. I recommend diced green apple or raisins, but for this recipe we are doing without. If you do add fruit, be sure to adjust your liquid (buttermilk in this case) accordingly!
Make a well in your dry ingredients, add the buttermilk, and combine quickly. (Room-temperature buttermilk is best, so I recommend hitting it with a warming charm if it’s been sitting in your refrigerator.)
Tip your mixture onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead into a smooth dough.
Lightly sprinkle your dough with flour and then roll it out to about 3cm thick.
Dip your 6 cm round cutter in some flour before cutting 4 scones from your dough. Bring together the scraps and re-roll while handling the dough as little as possible. Cut 4 more scones.
Place the scones on a warm baking tray and bake until risen and deep golden brown (approximately 12 minutes).
Transfer your scones to a cooling rack and immediately brush with warm honey. Leave to cool slightly.

Clotted Cream

My personal favourite topping for any scone. (On any pastry at all, really.) It’s not a finished scone until it’s topped with a thick layer of smooth clotted cream.

This, you do need to prepare in advance as it must chill for at least 12 hours (and, no, zapping it with a Glacius will not give you the expected results, trust me, I tried).

Blackberry Jam

The shrubs now blossoming in the once overgrown, brambly, edge of the back garden have been providing us with ripe, delicious blackberries year ‘round thanks to the atmospheric charms put in place by Neville, owner of Longbottom Plant & Flower Shop!

Tart and sweet, blackberry jam is the perfect compliment to these fluffy scones.

Lemon Curd

The lemon curd was an addition petitioned for by my dear husband, and I have to say it’s an excellent choice.

It also adds a vibrancy to the table with its bright yellow colour, not unlike Pansy’s Perceptive Polish — get the perfect nail colour with every outfit! Activated with a simple spell, Pansy’s Perceptive Polish will adjust to best complement any item in your wardrobe and beyond. Vibrant, pale, or neutral, one bottle of Pansy’s Perceptive Polish can do it all!

Like the clotted cream, lemon curd also needs to be made in advance as it needs to chill for a minimum of 4 hours.

Serve the scones warm with your favourite tea (or chocolate milk, if you’re my 6-year-old, Lily).

I hope you and your family enjoy these Cinnamon Scones and that they are as big of a hit in your home as they are in ours!

Finally, thank you to my handsome editor. I could not do this without you.

[Editor's note: I do not appreciate being slandered like this— everyone enjoys sweets. Additionally, I suggest no alterations to this recipe as it is perfect as it is.]
