Work Text:
It was the day of Christopher’s 13th birthday party. The 118 and their extended family had all gathered in Athena and Bobby’s backyard for a barbecue to celebrate the teen. Christopher was currently off playing a video game with Denny and Harry in the living room leaving the adults and Jee-Yun in the garden.
Bobby and Athena were chatting to Eddie’s Tia Pepa and Abeula, Hen and Karen were engaged in conversation with Maddie and Chimney and Ravi was talking to Eddie about a problem he was having with one of his tenants.
And Buck? Buck was perched on one of the garden chairs, balancing Oreo’s on his 38 week baby bump and grinning when the baby would kick, causing the Oreo’s to fall.
His pregnancy hadn’t exactly been planned, however he and Eddie had also not exactly been careful when it came to wearing protection so it hadn’t been a huge surprise when he received a positive pregnancy test. The two had been ecstatic though, and were now eagerly awaiting the birth of their second child.
Christopher had been hesitant at first, claiming his dad was too old to have another baby (Eddie daren’t argue that actually 32 was a perfectly normal age to have a baby and that he had been too young and a teenage parent when Chris had been born.) and throughout the pregnancy Buck and Eddie had done their best to make Christopher feel loved and included but it had been hard! The teenager had continued to push them both away and didn’t seem to want to be involved.
“Hey, baby.” Eddie grinned, breaking Buck from his train of thoughts.
“Hey.” Buck greeted. ‘Look, she keeps pushing her foot right to the top of my stomach.
Eddie smiled at his husband. “Should we do cake?’
”Ooh yes. I cannot wait for Chris to see the cake we had made.” Said cake was a triple layered chocolate cake with fondant decorations of all the things that Christopher loved: surfing, video games, science.
Buck pulled himself to stand and gathered everyone together while Eddie retrieved the cake from the kitchen. “Okay, 1.2..3.. Ha-OW.”
Eddie stopped immediately, putting the cake on the nearest table and rushing over to his husband. “Buck, what’s wrong, talk to me.”
”No, No I’m fine, sorry everyone.” He breathed, clutching at his stomach. “Happy birthd-OW” He whined.
”Buck, are you in labour?” Bobby rushed over to his pseudo-son.
“No, I’m not due for almost two weeks, it’s just those fake contractions I’m sure.”
”Let me look.” Hen pushed her way through.
“NO.” Buck shouted. “We are going to sing happy birthday and then we are going to eat cake. Christopher deserves his special day and I refuse to let this baby come today. So everybody sing!”
”Buck, it’s fine.” Christopher sighed. “Go to the hospital.”
”No, buddy you deserve the best birthday, Let’s start again I’m sure it’ll be fine.”
”At least let Aunt Hen check you over?” Christopher bargained.
“Fine. But rest assured I am fine.”
Buck let Hen check him over, which was a mistake. Turns out he was 100% effaced and definitely in the early stages of labour.
“Don’t tell anyone. Chris has been so hesitant about this baby I don't want to give him another reason to not like her.”
Hen sighed. ‘Fine. Only because you are in the early stages and this could still be a while longer.”
”Thank you.”
The two made their way down to the party, just giving a brief “false alarm” before continuing on. Chris seemed to enjoy the rest of the night but had a weird look on his face whenever he looked over at his dad and Buck. He knew Buck was having the baby, of course he was, he kept making a funny face every time he had one of those contraction things and was gripping at his stomach.
He waited until they were in the car on their way home home before saying anything, wanting to soak up being an only child as long as possible before saying: “Buck you need to go to the hospital.”
”What do you mean, buddy?” He breathed heavily, squeezing Eddie’s, who was driving, hand.
“Buck. I know you’re having the baby.”
Buck glanced at his dad. “How?”
”You keep making those funny faces and breathing really hard. You should go to the hospital.”
”I’m so sorry, Superman. I just wanted your birthday to be memorable, it’s not everyday your kid becomes a teenager and you deserve the best birthday-“
Christopher cut off the adults rambling. “This was great. It’s about to get better. I’m sorry I haven’t been excited about the baby. I was just worried about losing you both.” He admitted.
”Chris, you could neve lose us. You are our first born, we love you so much.” Eddie said.
“I know that, I guess I was just worried. But Buck you’ve been in pain all day just to make me happy. I should have known that you wouldn’t forget me.” Chris bowed his head.
“You have nothing to be sorry for. you are and always will be my Superman, no matter how many other children your Dad and I have. I love you Chris.” Buck reached back and grabbed his hand.
“Love you too.”
”I was going to wait until we got home to give you my present but now I guess we aren’t going straight home.” he noted as Eddie took the turning to head towards the hospital. “Chris, can I adopt you?”
”What?”
”I want to adopt you. Make you officially my kid. Can I?”
Chris wiped a stray tear away from his cheek. “Yes.” he nodded his head.
“Okay. Great. Now cover your ears.”
Chris did what he was told, ignoring the groan of pain and the trail of swear words that came from Buck. Yeah, they were going to be just fine.

Less than two hours later, Christopher stumbled into the all too familiar hospital rooms, gasping at the sight of his baby sister, lying asleep in his Dad’s arms.
“Hey buddy, come and meet your sister.”
”Wow, she’s so small.” Christopher sat beside Buck on his bed. “Are you okay, Buck?”
’I’m good. Better now that you’re here. You wanna hold her?”
Chris nodded his head and with his dad’s help held his sister in his arms. she immediately wrapped one of her fists around his little finger. “Woah. Hey, Buck.”
”Yeah, Superman?”
”I think I love her.”
”I’m glad.”
”I can’t wait for you to adopt me.”
Buck teared up, leaning to kiss his forehead. “Me neither, son. Me neither,”
