A Pretty Good Bet

Summary:

‘Do you think getting married was really our best bet, babe?’

Siri and Gustav discuss how beneficial their marriage has really been the last few years.

Notes:

Just a little fun one-shot I had in my drafts and decided to finish! While working on Niv's story I sometimes just. Like to write stuff for my baby girl and adopted son, just for the fun of it <333

Work Text:

‘Do you think getting married was really our best bet, babe?’

Siri had been playing with her wedding ring when her husband asked her that. They had just gotten into bed, his head on her chest, his fingers fiddling with her nightgown. From above, through the roof-window, the moon casted her soft lights on them.

Idyllic, it was to Siri.

‘What do you mean?’ she asked, and she felt Gustav shrug against her. He brought his hand up to her belly, a strained sigh leaving him when he felt the slight rounding of their budding child. It wasn’t moving nor breathing yet, and Siri sometimes felt it never would.

‘Well,’ Gustav started, casting his eyes up at the sky above. ‘I was just thinking, what did we even do it for? Like, was it to finally move in together, or to have some sort of excuse to spend time together?’

He motioned to Siri’s stomach. It hadn't been the first time they had been expecting, but they didn't have any kids in their house yet. ‘Or maybe to… y’know, just fit in with the norm or something?’

Siri couldn’t help but chuckle, moving her hand up to weave it through her husband’s dark hair. ‘If I remember well, we got married because we were in love. And, we have been for over five years, don’t you dare forget that.’

‘Yeah, I know, but did that have to be sealed with a wedding?’ Gustav pondered, rolling from his side to his back, the blankets and furs almost being pushed aside. Siri smiled, pushing herself up from the pillow and leaning down over her husband. Sure, the words he spoke were strange, but she had gotten used to that by now. The ramblings of his sometimes scattered mind had become an everyday occurrence to her.

‘It’s been good for us, Gustav,’ she told him, gently placing her hand on his cheek, playfully patting it once. ‘Did you really think my parents would’ve just… let me run free with you if we weren’t married? And besides, I like being married to you. A lot.’

Gustav grinned, winking at her. ‘Good, because I’ve been working pretty hard on being the best husband ever. Even gave you a baby to cook in your belly - again. Wasn’t that sooo generous of me?’

‘Oh, yes, you did so well with that, my love,’ Siri laughed softly, before laying herself down on her husband’s shoulder, her belly pressed up against his side. She stayed quiet for a little bit, allowing herself to draw little shapes on his chest with her finger.

‘Where did you get this question from? About if… if getting married was our best bet?’ she eventually asked, a sigh rippling through her when his one arm pressed her closer to him.

Gustav shrugged again. ‘Just overheard some old people gossiping. About, y’know, how happy they were they hadn’t gotten married, or something. Got thinking about what life would’ve looked like if we hadn’t tied the knot.’

‘You would’ve probably left New Berk with Fanghook to find some sort of purpose, love,’ Siri muttered, closing her eyes as they talked. ‘And I would have eventually been married off to some lovely man and have some grandchildren for mom and dad.’

‘Am I not a lovely man?’

‘No, dear, but that’s what I like about you.’ Siri chuckled, pressing her lips to his collarbone. ‘Or, maybe I would be the one travelling and you would’ve stayed on New Berk to school the village’s kids about dragon training, all the while winning countless races with Fanghook.’

Gustav grinned in triumph, shifting a bit to get more comfortable. Some sort of rest had come over them; he gazed up at the sky, thinking hard and deep. ‘We could’ve had a secret relationship. We could've put up a front to make it seem like we were best friends, just for the thrill of it.’

‘But you would’ve hated living with your parents for this long, surely if you only did it to keep up a ruse.’

‘I would’ve loved it. It’s you who would’ve gone insane staying with Felix and Elisabeth for longer than necessary, dollface,’ Gustav countered, and Siri let out a giggle, gently swatting his chest.

‘I hate to say it, but you’re right. I would’ve despised it.’

‘See?’ Gustav snorted, snuggling her a bit closer to him. Somehow, he still wasn’t used to how she laid against him, soft and easy and somewhat heavy. Surely with that growing child weighing on her, surely as her leg draped over his. It was almost an adventure to discover every night again.

It made him feel warmer inside. When he looked down at Siri, he was certain she felt it too. ‘I figured it out. We got married for this exact thing.’

‘Bantering in the middle of the night?’ Siri asked, glancing up at him with a smile. ‘That sounds like something we would do, yes. Although, this baby you so sweetly gave me to cook up for us is making me very sleepy, so you’ll have to continue this tomorrow.’

‘Yeah, yeah, sorry for keeping you up,’ Gustav teased back, kissing the top of her head. The bed creaked slightly as Siri got comfortable against him, a soft sigh leaving her, leaving him breathless and smiling.

Still, there was one more thought he wanted to share. ‘Hey, Seer?’

‘Yes…?’

‘I like being married to you too. Dunno if I’d prefer it to all the other scenarios we’ve given, but-’

‘But…?’

‘But it was a pretty good bet.’

Notes:

Some notes!!

1. Timeline wise, this would be when Siri's about 25 and Gustav's about 26/27, so after they lose Niv (about 2/3 years after), but before they have Sunniva. It's also happens after the Guster loses an arm which is fun to subtly reference. Siri's pregnancy in this one-shot is unfortunately one that would end in a miscarriage :(

2. While both Siri's parents, Felix and Elisabeth, are mentioned in this one-shot, Felix would've unfortunately already passed away during this little moment :(

I had a lot of fun with this little thing! Gussiri asking each other the big questions and bantering together is a big part of what makes them click. While I do often put it into doodles I've made of them, I don't get to do it as often in writing, seeing as Little Socks was too focused on hurt-comfort for actual banter to happen and in Promises, Promises, one of them was literally not around to do banter, so this was great to write!

They're silly and like a proud mom I just wanna squeeze their lil cheeks <333
