Chapter Text
Steve
Steve hears a muffled yelp come from his locker, and sighs. Just by scent he knows who it is. He opens the locker door and looks down to see Bucky.
It's a wonder he can fit in there. It's probably not very comfortable.
"Not having a good morning, are you?" Steve asks, helping Bucky out of the locker.
It's easy to forget that this is the same guy that happens to be the son of his mom's best friend. He has not inherited the same grace and self-assurance their mothers have.
"I'd say it's a normal day for me," Bucky mutters, dusting himself off. "Also, I may not have a good sense of smell compared to you, but you might want to consider washing whatever stinks in there. Which is everything."
Steve shrugs. "Just get to class. And try staying out of trouble for once."
"You say that like trouble doesn't automatically come to me. But whatever."
Steve watches Bucky run off to class with a shake of his head.
'The damn Beta didn't even say thank you.'
But since when has anyone these days.

Bucky
The thing about Betas is that their senses aren't as heightened as Alphas or Omegas. So, of course they wouldn't notice anything off until it was too late.
Which is why it was so easy for a couple of Alphas, like Brock Rumlow and Jack Rollins, to jump Bucky after school. When he was alone, as per usual.
Bucky struggled, screaming and writhing but he was easily held down and shut up by Jack after a few seconds.
"Shush. Just stay still," Brock murmurs as Bucky feels something prick his neck. A syringe? "Such a pretty little thing. If only you were an Omega."
"How long until it starts working?" Jack asked as Brock finishes administering whatever was in the syringe.
"He did say it'd probably be a couple days, and maybe two weeks to finish."
"If he survives."
Bucky's eyes widen in shock, his breath becoming quick and shallow. He starts trying to move, escape the two Alphas that may or may not kill him.
The Beta manages to kick Jack off of him and slap Brock away before making a run for it.
"You little shit," Brock yells.
Bucky doesn't need any heightened senses to know the two are chasing after him, and most likely catching up.
His best bet is getting someplace populated to lose them in a crowd, or getting home and locking all the doors in hopes of them giving up and leaving.
It's too bad his parents are out on a field trip with his sisters. He wishes he agreed to go with them right about now.
Bucky feels Jack's hand attempt to grab him and immediately decides to stop wishing and start running faster.
Besides, his house was nearby and he was getting tired. What a nice house with a fence and locks.
The Beta uses the small opening in the fence, knowing Brock and Jack wouldn't even think to use it as well. He makes it to the door before the two Alphas can even start getting over the fence.
He slams the door shut and locks it, panting heavily.
Bucky stumbles away when he hears a harsh thud at the front door. Then he looks around for the nearest object he could use as a weapon and zeros in on the knife holder.
Once he grabs a knife, he waits at the door, wondering if Brock and Jack would manage to break the door down.
But fortunately, someone else had been spooked and called the cops. Bucky could hear the sirens.
Surely, that would deter the two Alphas.
"Stay away!" Bucky tries to yell, but his voice fails him.
But they just kept pounding at the door.
Finally, it gave way to them, making Bucky whimper.
"Daddy's home," Brock says menacingly, completely ignoring the sound of the sirens and yelling behind him.
Bucky tightens his grip on the knife as they approach.
Jack lunges at the Beta, resulting in a stab to the stomach. The Alpha stumbles back with a groan as Bucky lets go of the knife, eyes wide with fear.
The police come in, staring at the scene before them.
Bucky backs away, only focused on the bloody spot around the knife in Jack's stomach.
That's the last thing he remembers before fainting.

Steve
Steve's walking to Bucky's house when he gets a call.
"Winifred? Again?" Steve asks. The Beta woman had called to ask the Alpha to check on Bucky, simply because he hadn't called or answered any texts.
He answers the phone and holds it up to his ear.
"Yeah, Aunt Winnie?"
"I just got a call from the hospital. Bucky was attacked."
"Wait, what? You ca- you can't be serious!"
"Would I joke about something like this?!" Winifred yells, causing Steve to pull away quickly.
"Alright, I get it! You're serious. Sorry," Steve apologizes. "I'll go to the hospital and find out what happened."
"Thank you, Stevie! Such a kind boy! Sarah raised you well," Winifred says sweetly as if she wasn't just abusing Steve's sensitive ears with her vocal cords.
"Thanks, Aunt Winnie. I'll be sure to tell her you said that. But first, I guess I'll go check on Bucky."
"You do that, dear!"
They exchange farewells before Steve hangs up and starts walking back to his own home. So, he can drive.
He does keep his word, no matter how annoyed he gets with people. Like a certain Beta.
'Hopefully, an alive and healthy Beta. If someone actually did hurt him, they're gonna fucking pay.'
Steve pauses for a moment. Was that really a thought that went through his head? With such anger, too.
"I'm not actually starting to like the guy, am I?" The Alpha asks himself. He frowns, confused as he continues to walk to his car.
Once he's in, he starts it up and drives to the hospital.

The first thing he smells when he opens the door to Bucky's room makes him freeze.
His scent is definitely not what it used to be.
