Building Up A Relationship That Will Never Last

Summary:

[[Day 3: Burn/Build]]

Warning: This is very rushed because I got stressed while writing this because I got writers block.

Martyn wanted to keep Ren out of the games. He made a deal with the Watchers, but deals don't last forever. Once it snaps, he goes back to see a certain someone he hasn't seen in awhile.

Notes:

This is probably the worst one I've written so far. I was rushing this because I couldn't work on it that much. Stress is not good for me when I wanna write. Besides I didn't know what to do for this day.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Over and over again, in every death game, Ren and Martyn teamed up together. Building up their relationship over and over just for it to end once one of them was killed off. There was only one entity that Martyn could think of, the one who was causing his relationship to crumble only to make them build it back up again.

He had just finished the fourth season, Limited Life. The season where he finally won, will the watchers be happy for once? At the beginning of the season, Martyn told the watchers that he would win this season if they let Ren go. What happened? He won. Thousands of eyes were now focused on him, watching as he fell deeper in the void.

Honestly, he wished that the Watchers would just say something. Martyn was tired of the silence, sure the Watchers speak in a way where he normally couldn’t understand but it would be better than the silence. Sure there was the wind making noise but it wasn’t loud enough to stop his ears from ringing.

Martyn fell for a long time until he saw the Watcher’s symbol. A new season was beginning. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes in the process. Then he opened his eyes. Seeing the large statue of what he could assume to be a watcher. It even has the symbol. Grian smiled as he opened his arms, beginning to introduce the new season, “Welcome to Secret Life,”

Martyn scanned the normal circle that they always stood in at the beginning of season. There were some people who returned and one new person. He could only feel bad for those three. They didn’t deserve to be back in these death games. At least one person wasn’t there, Ren was still safe.

He was surprised that the Watchers had kept their promise. Honestly, making deals with a Watcher was risky but he got what he wanted and that was for his boyfriend to be safe. The season was normal. He was struggling to deal with the no regen mechanic but the tasks were simple enough. There was one other issue, the other players. Making fun of him by calling him Brute Boy after dying to a piglin brute. Martyn shrugged it off and teamed up with Jimmy, who also became yellow, and the two became the Big Dogs.

Martyn was happy, smiling as he tried guessing tasks. Exploding with excitement once he managed to guess Tango’s task. Only if Ren could see him succeed. Wait no, he didn’t want his partner here. He shook off the feeling and went along with the season. Martyn was happy for most of it until he accidentally walked off the end platform.

“First Red, Last Dead,” That one little sentence kept repeating as he went back up to Baxter. He was going to get crap done. Thankfully, he wasn’t the only red. Jimmy died soon after by the dragon. Martyn and Jimmy tried to rain terror on the rest of the server. One more successful than the other.

During one of the sessions, Tango seemed…off to say the least. Walking closer to the blaze hybrid, he noticed that Tango was not really a blaze anymore. Instead, having large wolf-like ears, he even sounded different now having an accent. An accent that he recognized. Was that Ren? The Watcher’s broke their promise. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Why was Ren back?!

Ren was trying his hardest to act like Tango to the best of his degree. He tried his best to ignore it. He didn’t want to acknowledge it, and just acted like it was Tango. One of the ways he tried to forget about it is by doing one of his red tasks which was to drop an anvil on a yellow or a green. They were about to announce the winner of the heart giveaway, then he dropped it on Ren who immediately tried to cover his head.

The anvil smashed Ren’s head, taking several hearts off the hybrid. “Martyn!” Ren called out as he looked up, seeing Martyn laughing in the heart foundation building. He was both happy to see Ren again but didn’t want him here at the same time. “See ya!” He called out before diving into the water that wrapped around the island.

Martyn did feel a bit guilty about it, but it was just how the life series goes. Honestly he thought the session was gonna be fine until Etho and Grian unleashed a Wither and a Warden! Everyone was running around, Scar was of course panicking as the wither chased him.

Spawn was an absolute mess, there were massive craters in the ground. The only thing that wasn't destroyed was the Secret Keeper. There was something else that bothered him, just a feeling he had. Earlier Jimmy was celebrating that his curse was broken but Martyn saw him running, a warden was right on his fellow Big Dog’s tail. Then lightning  striked. Then Mumbo was running from the same warden, getting caught in two fence posts he placed earlier.

Lighting striked again soon after. Martyn was the last red. His anger started to boil. Not only did the Watchers break their promise but now he lost his fellow Big Dog and the rest of the reds.

When the session was over, he laughed along with everyone else who survived, but that wasn't the real Martyn. Not at all. He had different plans.

For the rest of the series, he tried, he really tried his hardest but got shot with an arrow straight to the face. Falling off the ladder and onto the soft grass, but for him it didn't feel like grass. Instead he was back in that void again. Falling like he always did.

Then the watchers started watching him fall, just like they always did. “You lied to me.”

“We didn't lie. He wasn't in the game.”

“Yes, he was.”

“That was Tango.”

“You and I both know that wasn't Tango!” Martyn cried out, looking around frantically. “Getting emotional now, are we? But it wasn't truly him. We did follow through with our deal but we will be breaking it now.”

“What do you mean?”

“Goodbye, Martyn.”

“Wait!”

Martyn was sent into darkness, alone once again. He just had to wait in until the next season happened. He just wanted to see Ren again. It took a while for the next reason, this one felt different. It was as if he was drunk in a way.

Martyn woke up back in the circle they all started in. He scanned around and saw a few people missing but noticed one person who stood out. Ren, who was smiling, was excited to see what was gonna happen. Almost like he forgot what happened in the last three games he was in.

They really weren't lying. The intro went how it normally did, with Grian introducing the game and the rest went off. He watched Ren and Skizz team up and walk off.

He just decided to forget about it, just pretend it's a normal game but eventually Ren came up to him with a smile. “Hey, Ren.. you alright? How's your return?”

“Pretty good! It's nice to be back. I've missed you,” Ren’s tone was gentle as he reached for Martyn's hand, eventually holding it in his own. “I've missed you too, m’lord.” Martyn smiled before hugging Ren, who flinched back at the sudden hug but leaned into it.

“Ren?”

“Yes?”

“Do you remember the other seasons?”

Ren seemed to pause at this question. He was about to speak before he was stopped. Martyn was able to see what stopped his partner. It was almost like the area around them glitched, turning purple and showed the watcher symbol. It did stop though. “So Martyn! What are ya doin, dude?”

Ren seemed to move along from the question. Of course the watchers didn't want his boyfriend to remember. Martyn sighed before giving Ren a gentle smile. “Just trying to go get my stuff back. Wanna come with?”

“I would love to,” Ren smiled as he happily nodded. Nice to see the hybrid being happy, Martyn couldn't help but love the man. Martyn jumped into the water and encouraged Ren to do the same. The hybrid was hesitant but did it anyway.

The two got along as they went into a cave where Martyn died. Bonding back together, rebuilding a relationship that has been long forgotten. Martyn and Ren stayed together, even after they got out of the cave and went up to Ren’s makeshift home where Skizz was.

He missed this. This is what he wanted, and he loves seeing Ren be happy again. Oh how he missed these moments of the group being wholesome. Their relationship shall build up again, and Martyn will make sure of it.

Notes:

Thank you for reading, I hope it wasn't that bad. Hopefully the next will actually work with me.
