My Own Words

Summary:

Sabimaru wants to talk to everyone with nothing but their own voice

Work Text:

It was very rare to see Sabimaru without their trusty tablet to help him out. So, when they approached everyone and asked if they could talk with Isaac nowhere in sight, everyone was a little concerned. Of course, they had all agreed to it. That was how the four of them had found their way to Houtaro's house and set up to talk at a table in the empty diner.

Sabimaru didn't try to start the conversation right away. They stared at the table, their eyes occasionally darting up to quickly take in the others. They looked nervous.

"Are you okay, Sabi?" Renge was the first to break the awkward silence.

Sabimaru nodded and then quietly replied. "I'm okay..."

"So... what did you want to tall about?" Rinne questioned.

Sabimaru was silent for a long time again. Eventually, they did finally get something out. "I... have something to say..."

"About what?"

"I... I..." They stopped.

The other three exchanged glances. They had no idea what to think of this. It was quite out of character. Just what was so important that this was how they wanted to do it?

"Are you sure you're okay?" Renge asked, obvious concern in her voice.

Sabimaru nodded. "Just... nervous."

"There's nothing to be nervous about, senpai! You can tell us!" Houtaro joined in now, trying his best to be encouraging.

Sabimaru took a few deep breaths. They had to do this. They had said they would today. They couldn't go back on their promise to themself now. Even if this was proving to be a lot harder than they had expected, they had to keep going. If they ended this now everyone would just be even more concerned about what was going on.

After another long moment of preparation, Sabimaru tried once more. "I... have been thinking about... things and I... I um... am not a guy."

There was a long silence from everyone. They were all staring at them.

"Eh?"

"I... think I'm nonbinary." Sabimaru managed to conclude.

"What's that?" Houtaro asked.

Sabimaru didn't know if they had the energy to answer. They were struggling to get any more words out. Maybe they should've brought Isaac to help...

"I looked it up. Here." Renge held out her phone. Thank God she was helping. She probably realized they weren't going to be able to answer very well.

Rinne and Houtaro read the stuff on Renge's phone. Sabimaru waited nervously, starting to fiddle with their hands as they waited. Would they all understand? They just wanted to finally have a way to describe what they had been feelings for a while.

"Cool." Houtaro said, looking over at Sabimaru now. "So, do we need to do anything?"

Renge was kind enough to lend her phone for them to type on. Sabimaru cursed themself for somehow not even bringing that with them for this. They hadn't wanted to rely on anything but their voice but that was stupid to try and do, they realized now.

They typed out an explanation that they would just like they/them pronouns to be used on them instead. Everyone nodded to the request. There was a question about the others in their group and of they were aware, which the answer was no. Sabimaru had no idea how to tell anyone else. Everyone else was a bit more... intimidating. But, they probably should at some point...

For now, this had been enough. They needed time to recover from this conversation. But, they had done it. It didn't go exactly the way they had expected, but it had worked out in the end.
