Work Text:

You saw it when it happened, you saw as Madara impaled Sasuke through the chest. It had you taken aback, watching with wide eyes, you wanted to move but you couldn’t it was like your body was paralyzed. A sense of dread washed over you as blood started seeping through his clothes, drenching them. This couldn’t be happening…..right? No this had to be a nightmare, a horrible dream you would wake up in a few seconds. Nothing. You wanted to move, to scream, to do anything but stand like an idiot.

Your breathing got shaky, bruises and cuts covered your body as you managed to take one step forward, attempting to force yourself out of the tunnel vision you were experiencing. Another step. And another until you broke out completely and sprinted as fast as you could (which being honest wasn’t very fast) to Sasuke who was lying on the ground at this point.

The ground around him was all broken up and you knelt down beside him. “Sasuke-“ you speak, trying to prevent any voice cracks.

“Hey….” He mumbled, trying to focus on your face despite the blood loss. You pulled him into your lap, tears forming in your eyes. You weren’t a medical ninja in any sense of the word, not that it’d matter anyway. You were completely out of chakra.

“You’ll be okay…” You said quietly, not sure if you’re trying to convince yourself or him.

“You don’t believe that…and you know it’s not true” Sasuke says, seemingly accepting his fate which was very out of character for the Uchiha.

His blood dripped onto your hands as you held him in your arms. You held him tightly afraid of what would happen if you let go, tears silently fell down your cheeks as the reality of the situation began setting in. “This can’t be real….” You mumbled quietly to yourself

“I hate to break it to you but this is very real….” Sasuke chuckles humorlessly, looking up at your tear stained face. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for leaving, I’m sorry for all those times I pushed you away, I’m sorry.”

You looked up and then back down at him with a shaky breath. “I- please don’t apologize…..now is not the time.”

“If I don’t say it now, I’ll never get to….” Sasuke said, blood starting to drip from the corner of his mouth. “I don’t want to die…” he let out a shaky breath. “Do you think heaven is real?” He asked, sounding unsure and…..scared?

You looked away for a moment, not wanting him to see your tears. “I think so…” you say quietly, not wanting him to hear your voice break. Tears stained your face, you felt pathetic, you weren’t the one dying and yet here you were crying like a child.

Sasuke nodded. “Thank you…” he let out a sigh as he felt his pulse getting slower. “Thank you for everything.”

“Sasuke….” You mumbled quietly. “Please don’t die…..”

“I wish it didn’t have to end like this…..”

“Maybe it doesn’t-“

Sasuke cut you off. “Im sorry…” Sasuke’s breathing becomes shallower as the blood loss starts affecting him.

“Don’t….” You barely mumble, not able to get out many words on account of your crying. “Don’t die….”

Sasuke looked at your teary eyes and said softly “Don’t cry for me…” he gently reached his hand up and touched your cheek, wiping away your tears. “I don’t deserve it….” He sighed again. “Tell Naruto and Sakura I’m sorry too….”

He looked at you and then the sky, and then he closed his eyes for what would be the last time. His body went limp in your arms, he had a peaceful look on his face like he was just sleeping. You finally let your emotions out and sobbed over his body for what felt like eternity. Why? Why did this have to happen? You held him tightly, you weren’t sure why but you just couldn’t let go yet. You don’t think you could ever let go again.
