Work Text:
The day had passed into the early evening. Megumi stood at the open door of the teachers room. He figured most of the teachers would have left for the day, same as the students. If anything he knew Gojo wouldn’t be around since he was out somewhere on a mission. He still hoped the person he was hoping to speak to was in the room alone.
He took a deep breath in psyching himself up before he knocked on the door frame of the teacher’s room.
“Come in,” Geto called.
Some of the nervousness left Megumi’s body. He at least knew Geto was in the teachers room, and as he stepped into the room he saw only Geto was there.
Megumi stepped into the room, “are you busy?”
Geto was at his desk, Megumi assumed he was marking papers. There weren't a lot of students at Jujutsu high, and even less assignments. Most of what they learned here involved curses and being a jujutsu sorcerer, for most of the students they wouldn’t need to know a whole lot of math and english.
“Not at all,” Geto replied with a smile, “have a seat Megumi.”
Megumi nodded and sat on the stool across from Geto. His nervousness was setting back in. He fidgeted with his hands in his lap not making eye contact with Geto.
“What can I do for you Megumi?” Geto asked.
Megumi kept his gaze on his hands, “You can’t tell Gojo.”
“That depends.”
“I mean it.”
“I was kidding, I won’t tell him.”
Megumi sighed, readying himself for what he was about to say. “I think I like Itadori.” His face now glowing red.
“Oh,” Geto leaned back, “I can see why you don’t want me to tell Satoru.”
“It’s just… I don’t know.”
“You’re worried he won’t like you back?” Geto asked.
“No,” Megumi said with a sigh “I don’t know if I actually like him or just think I do.”
“And that’s why you told me?”
Megumi nodded.
“I see well,” Geto leaned forward, “Why do you think you like him?”
Megumi shrugged, “I don’t know, it’s just weird.”
“Weird how?”
“I don’t know,” Megumi repeated. “I didn’t even think I could love anyone. I see how you and Gojo are and just.” Megumi paused, “didn’t think I could have that.”
Geto nodded along as Megumi spoke, “Megumi,” his voice was kind. “Just because you don’t love like me and Satoru, doesn’t mean you can’t love someone.”
Megumi remained quiet, squeezing his hands together. Despite going over this in his head hundreds of times before actually speaking with Geto he was unsure of what to say. Until eventually he sighed again, “I know.”
“But, that’s not why you wanted to talk to me, isn’t it?”
Megumi nodded, “I guess, I just wanted to know if I actually love him.”
Geto smiled, “you might be over thinking this Megumi.”
“I’m not,” Megumi shot back, “I just don’t want to mess things up.”
There was silence for a moment before Megumi continued talking, “I just don’t know if I actually love him.”
“Well, what do you feel?” Geto asked.
Megumi breathed out leaning back and staring at the ceiling, “I just like being around him, he’s warm and it’s nice.”
Geto nodded.
“He makes me happy I guess, I want to be around him.”
Megumi tried to find other words to explain it, but he could find them. He was better at reading other people's emotions than his own. That whole side of him was a mystery to himself. It normally never bothered him, he rarely felt the need to know his own emotions, and perhaps that is why he found this so annoying. He wanted to understand how he felt about Itadori, he wanted it out of his head.
He just wanted to know if he loved the boy who he had saved and had saved him.
“Megumi,” Geto started, “I think you could call that love.”
Megumi sat in silence for a moment, taking in what Geto had said. It was such a small thing, a few words. But it somehow felt like the most important thing he will ever hear.
Love.
He loved Itadori.
He felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. The inner conflict he had was less chaotic and all consuming. Megumi still wouldn’t say he fully understands how he feels, but he knows where to start.
He felt tears roll down his cheek followed by a sharp breath in.
He hardly realized how overwhelming this had been. The question looming over his head for weeks that had consumed so much of his life, so much of his energy. And now it is over. The anxiety within him finally washed away.
His tears were happy ones.
“Megumi?” Geto said, in a worried tone as he started to stand from his chair.
Megumi couldn’t say anything, his body shaking with each sob.
Geto stepped towards Megumi offering a hug, which Megumi accepted. He pressed his face into the shoulder of his second father figure. Geto wrapped his arms around Megumi holding him tight, rubbing soothing circles on Megumi’s back.
“It’s okay,” Geto whispered, allowing Megumi to cry.
And in turn, Megumi allowed himself to cry.
The whole time Megumi was crying, Geto never let go of him.
“It’s getting late,” Geto said, in a soft tone once Megumi's tears turned to soft sobs, “we should get to the dorms.”
Megumi slowly pulled away from Geto, his cheek tear stained and eyes red.
“I still have some work to do here, but if you want I can walk with you to your room.”
Megumi shook his head, “I’m fine.”
Geto nodded, “goodnight Megumi.”
“Night,” Megumi replied as he left the room.
He took his time as he walked back to his room. He knew he loved Itadori. What he would do with this information, he didn’t know. But, he knew he would figure it out. They are both young, and Itadori would be around until they find all of Sukuna’s fingers. And even then, Megumi doubted Gojo would just allow Itadori to be executed. But he also knew that being a Jujutsu sorcerer meant you could die at any time.
For now Megumi was tired. He had a mission the next day. He decided he’ll figure it out after that.
