To be clear, Astarion was in no real danger. He wouldn’t have left his home planet if he thought so. In between the spirited stories that had influenced his escape, the whirlwind romances and daring heroics, the elders told the same horror stories that all starborn heard from the time their hearts began to burn: if you didn’t behave, stareaters would come in the dark and drink the light right from your veins. If you didn’t stay home, you’d be captured, sold, and killed as soon as someone found out what you were.
But what he should have wondered, as he hopped from planet to planet, was how much the elders were keeping from him. How true their tales were to the nature of stareaters. And, most importantly, how many things were much worse than dying.
