Every year, on this day, three thousand lanterns would ascend into the sky, all of them being for one specific god. Xie Lian. And the one who released the lanterns would always be the same as well. Hua Cheng.
This had been happening for many years now, but it was still so beautiful to Xie Lian every time. He smiled as he watched his husband let go of the final, three thousandth lantern. Hua Cheng turned toward Xie Lian and smiled at him as well.
“You won the lantern contest again,” he said.
Xie Lian laughed. “I always win these days,” he said. “It’s nothing new.”
Hua Cheng walked over to Xie Lian and brought him into a hug. Xie Lian kissed his husband and smiled again. “Thank you, though.”
“I don’t need any thanks,” Hua Cheng said. “I would release three thousand lanterns for you regardless.”
Xie Lian truly loved him so much.
