Chapter Text
Callum and Rayla had decided to take a leisurely stroll through the bustling streets of Katolis that day, immersing themselves in the vibrant energy of the markets. Their hands linked, they moved through the crowd, lost in their own world. Oblivious to any odd or judgmental glances thrown their way, they focused only on each other’s company.
As they reached the city square, their attention was drawn to the sight of several children frolicking about, their laughter echoing through the air. Among them were halfling children, their unique features unmistakably marking them as part Moonshadow Elf.
Callum couldn’t help but smile at the heartwarming scene, envisioning a future where he and Rayla might have children of their own, possibly resembling the playful halflings before them. The mere thought sent a rush of warmth to his cheeks, though he tried to hide it.
Feeling Rayla’s gentle squeeze on his hand, Callum looked to her, finding her smiling knowingly at him. “Kinda sweet, Isn’t it, love?”
Before he could respond, she leaned in and pressed a tender kiss to his cheek. His blush deepened at her affectionate gesture, but he managed to return her smile. “Y-yeah,” he agreed softly, “it is.”
Though he knew Rayla was teasing him, the image of their hypothetical children lingered in his mind long after they had passed the playful halflings, leaving him lost in thought as they continued their stroll through the bustling streets of Katolis.
Throughout the rest of the day, Callum and Rayla continued their routine, seamlessly navigating the familiar rhythm of their daily lives together. They indulged in shared meals, exchanged playful conversation, and found comfort in each other’s presence as they pursued various activities around Katolis.
Callum couldn’t shake the weight of his thoughts, his mind consumed by the question that lingered on the tip of his tongue. Despite the warmth of their bond and the certainty they both shared about their future together, he couldn’t find the courage to broach the subject of marriage. Each time he glanced at Rayla, a wave of uncertainty washed over him, leaving him paralyzed with indecision.
Whenever Rayla noticed his distraction, she would gently ask if he was alright, concern in her eyes. And each time, Callum would offer a reassuring smile and a quick nod, brushing off her worries with a casual remark about being lost in thought or simply tired from the day’s activities. He couldn’t bear to burden her with his internal struggle, worried that his hesitation would cast a shadow over their otherwise joyful moments together.
As they prepared to retire for the night, Callum pondered whether he should seek advice from Ezran, known for his wisdom and insight. As he moved to exit her room, Rayla intercepted him, enveloping him from behind.
“Where are you off to?” she asked, her arms encircling his waist.
Callum placed his hand over hers, giving it a gentle squeeze. “I just need to speak with Ezran about something,” he explained, his voice soft.
He sensed Rayla’s smile against the nape of his neck as she nestled closer. “Alright, but don’t take too long. You’re warm,” she murmured, her breath sending a shiver down his spine.
“I’ll try not to, Ray,” Callum replied with a smile, savoring the warmth of her presence. Rayla reluctantly released him, stealing a quick kiss before he departed.
—
Making his way towards Ezran’s King’s Chambers alone, Callum found his thoughts growing increasingly tumultuous. He grappled with uncertainty, unsure of whether he was ready to take such a significant step in their relationship—and whether Rayla felt the same way.
When he reached Ezran’s door, Callum paused, his hand hovering uncertainly before he finally knocked.
“Come in,” Ezran’s voice invited. As Callum entered, his younger brother looked up from his desk, a warm smile gracing his features. “Hey, is there anything I can help you with?” he offered.
Callum nodded in response but remained silent, his movements hesitant as he made his way to the fireplace. There, he began to pace slowly, his hands fidgeting with nervous energy.
Observing Callum’s behavior, Ezran furrowed his brow in confusion. “Um, what is it?” he asked.
Yet, Callum offered no immediate reply, lost in his own thoughts. Ezran returned his attention to his work, allowing his brother the space to gather his thoughts and speak when ready. However, he couldn’t help but steal occasional glances at Callum, growing increasingly worried as he noticed the restlessness in his eyes.
After what felt like an eternity of agonizing silence, Callum finally came to a halt, his restless pacing ceasing as his shoulders slumped under the weight of his internal struggle. He turned to face Ezran, and with a deep breath, he summoned the courage to voice his concerns.
“Um... I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately,” Callum admitted, his gaze drifting momentarily to the flickering flames dancing in the fireplace.
Ezran looked up at his brother, his expression curious.
“And I... I think—” Callum paused, gathering his thoughts before taking another deep breath, “I think I’m going to ask Rayla to marry me.”
Ezran’s features softened, and he rose from his seat to join Callum by the fireplace. “Well, it’s about time!” he remarked with a light chuckle. “That’s great, Callum.”
However, Callum’s expression remained unimpressed as he regarded his brother. “‘About time’? Am I the only one freaking out about this?” he asked.
Ezran was slightly taken aback by the question. “What do you mean?”
“I– it’s such a big step. What if I’m not ready?”
“You and Rayla have been through so much together. You were torn apart and you both were able to pick up the pieces and make each other whole again. You’ve proven that you’re ready.” Ezran’s voice was gentle.
“But what if Rayla isn’t ready?” he fretted, his gaze drifting to the flickering flames of the fireplace.
Ezran placed a reassuring hand on his brother’s shoulder. “Trust me, she is,” he affirmed with unwavering confidence. “Rayla loves you, Callum. She’s committed to you, just as much as you are to her.”
Callum sighed, his worries shifting to another concern. “And what about her parents? What if they don’t approve?” he pondered aloud, his voice tinged with anxiety.
Ezran smiled reassuringly. “Lain and Tiadrin care about you, Callum. They see how much you love Rayla, and they want what’s best for both of you. Trust me, they’ll support your decision.”
Callum’s mind raced, his thoughts drifting to the delegates in the Human Kingdoms and the political proposals he’d declined. He worried about the potential repercussions, fearing that they might disapprove of his decision to marry Rayla.
“Callum, listen to me,” Ezran began, his voice calm yet firm. “It doesn’t matter what some noble or delegate has to say about you two, what matters is that you love each other.”
As Callum continued to voice his fears, Ezran remained a steadfast source of encouragement, countering each worry with words of assurance. Finally, after addressing every concern, Ezran looked his brother in the eye and spoke with unwavering conviction.
“Callum, everything will be fine,” Ezran said firmly, his tone leaving no room for doubt. “You and Rayla belong together, and no matter what happens, you’ll always have each other. Trust in your love, and everything else will fall into place.”
Despite Ezran’s assurances, Callum couldn’t shake his deepest fear. With a heavy heart, he finally said, “But what if she says no?”
Ezran’s brows furrowed in surprise. “What do you mean ‘what if she says no’?” he asked incredulously. “Of course she’ll say yes, Callum. She loves you, so much.”
Callum let out a resigned sigh. “I know she does, but that doesn’t change the fact that she may not believe she deserves it.” He turned to face the fireplace, a flicker of vulnerability in his eyes. “I know that she loves me, and I love her, heck,” he chuckled softly, “we’ve already planned out our house with each other when we were on the Argo II, but…” he trailed off, his thoughts drifting into uncertainty.
“Rayla can know something to be true and still feel the opposite,” he continued, his voice tinged with frustration. “So, I’m worried that she would try to deprive herself of this, too.” He braced a palm on the mantle, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames. “But if she does say yes, and finds out that I thought she’d say no, then she’d think that I didn’t trust her, and then she’d try to come up with some way to convince me that she’d be okay if we didn’t marry, and…” his words trailed off into a ramble of anxiety.
“Callum,” Ezran interrupted firmly, making Callum look at him. “It’ll be fine.”
Callum turned fully towards Ezran, “You don’t know that,” he countered.
Ezran paused, his expression softening as he regarded his brother with empathy. “Callum, I understand your concerns,” he began, his voice gentle yet resolute. “Rayla may have moments of doubt, but deep down, she knows she deserves happiness,” Ezran continued, “And that happiness is with you.”
Callum met Ezran’s gaze, “But what if I’m wrong?” he whispered, his voice tinged with doubt.
Ezran squeezed his brother’s shoulder reassuringly. “You and Rayla belong together, and nothing can change that.”
Callum took a deep breath, his shoulders sagging with the weight of his insecurities. “I know, Ez,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
Ezran offered a small smile. “And no matter what happens, remember that I’ll always be here for you.”
—
Callum quietly made his way back to their rooms, his thoughts still swirling with uncertainty. He almost passed Rayla’s door, intending to retreat to his own room, but then remembered their arrangement for the night. He recalled Rayla’s restless sleep and the nightmares that had plagued her in recent nights. With a soft exhale, he pushed open her door and slipped inside, careful not to disturb her slumber.
Rayla stirred at his presence, her voice barely audible in the darkness. “Mmm, you’re late,” she murmured sleepily.
A smile tugged at the corners of Callum’s lips as he settled beside her, wrapping his arm around her waist. “Sorry, Ray, I hope I can make it up to you,” he whispered, his breath warm against her skin.
She turned in his embrace, facing him with a playful glint in her eyes. “Well,” she teased, “lucky for you, I take apologies in cuddles.” With that, she nestled closer to him, her head resting against his chest.
Callum’s smile widened, feeling the tension of the evening melting away in her presence. “That works out then,” he murmured, his fingers tracing gentle patterns along her back.
He felt her smile against his neck, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yeah, it does.”
In the warmth of each other’s arms, they drifted off to sleep, the worries of the day fading into the peaceful embrace of the night.
—
Callum and Rayla had made plans to visit her parents, Lain and Tiadrin, as well as Runaan and Ethari at The Silvergrove in a week’s time. It was an opportune moment for Callum to seek Lain and Tiadrin’s blessing for their union. If they granted their approval, Callum would then approach Ethari with a request to craft a ring and horn cuffs for him
With each passing day, Callum’s anticipation grew, mingled with a hint of nervousness. He hoped to orchestrate the proposal seamlessly, keeping it a secret from Rayla until the perfect moment presented itself.
As the day of their departure arrived, Callum made a decision to utilize his mage wings to transport them to The Silvergrove. However, he hadn’t informed Rayla of his plan, leaving her puzzled when she emerged into the courtyard to find no mounts in sight.
“Aren’t we riding there?” she asked, her confusion evident. Callum shrugged nonchalantly, “I thought I’d fly us there using my wings.”
Rayla’s expression shifted to one of concern. “All the way to The Silvergrove from here?” she asked, her hands running up his arms, where the runes were, underneath his jacket sleeves.
With a reassuring smile, Callum responded, “I’ll be fine, Ray. It’s not too far past the border.”
Despite his reassurances, Rayla remained unconvinced. “I just don’t want you overexerting yourself,” she expressed, gently squeezing his arms.
“I won’t,” Callum promised earnestly.
“You don’t know that,” Rayla fretted, her worry palpable.
“Love,” he said soothingly.
After a moment of contemplation, Rayla made a request. “Can we just... at least ride my Shadowpaw to the border? Then you can fly us from there, alright?”
A warm smile graced Callum’s lips as he nodded in agreement. “Sure, Ray,” he agreed, leaning in to plant a kiss on her forehead. “Whatever you want.”
—
As they swiftly located Rayla’s Shadowpaw in the stables, Callum suggested, “I can take the front and handle the reins, Rayla. You can rest behind me if you need to.”
Rayla shook her head, insisting, “No, you need the rest more, especially if you’re going to fly us both to The Silvergrove.”
“But you’ve been dealing with those nightmares,” Callum countered gently. “You should take it easy.”
Rayla sighed, her expression softening. “Alright, fine,” she relented, giving in to his persistence. “But only because you won’t stop worrying otherwise.”
Callum grinned, grateful for her concession. “Thanks, Rayla,” he said warmly, helping her onto the Shadowpaw behind him. “Let’s head to the border.”
—
As they arrived at The Silvergrove, Callum expertly landed them on the wide, curving trunk leading to the hidden village. With a nod to Rayla, they performed the familiar dance ritual, causing the illusion to dissipate and reveal the spiraling village below.
Rayla shot Callum a teasing smirk. “You’ve gotten better at it.”
He returned her smile. “Well, I have a good teacher.” Ever shameless, he leaned in to kiss her cheek, earning a blush from Rayla, who was keenly aware of the attention their entrance had drawn from nearby elves.
Before she could respond, he took her hand pulling her towards Runaan and Ethari’s house. As they approached, they spotted Runaan outside, preparing to ascend the steps. He turned at the sound of their approach, offering them a humble smile.
As they drew closer, Runaan greeted them. “Rayla, Callum, it’s good to see you.” Rayla embraced Runaan tightly. When they pulled back from the hug, Runaan glanced over Rayla’s shoulder at Callum, giving him a nod. “I hope you’ve taken good care of her?” he asked.
Stepping up beside his girlfriend, Callum took her hand firmly. “I have,” he assured Runaan with a sincere smile.
Runaan returned the smile. “I’m sure,” he replied, then gestured for them to follow him. “Come, the others are in the house, and I’m sure they’ll be just as glad to see you.”
Ascending the tall, winding stairs that hugged the tree where the house was built into, they followed Runaan until he pushed open the doors. Inside, Ethari, Tiadrin, and Lain awaited them, their warm smiles welcoming the couple.
Rayla’s parents, Tiadrin and Lain, stood up as they entered, their expressions brightening at the sight of their daughter and her companion. “Rayla, Callum, it’s wonderful to have you both here,” Tiadrin exclaimed, her voice filled with genuine warmth. Lain nodded in agreement, a smile playing on his lips.
Rayla stepped forward, embracing her parents in turn. “It’s good to see you too, Mom, Dad,” she said, her voice tinged with affection. Callum followed suit, offering a polite nod and a warm smile as he greeted them.
Ethari, standing nearby, watched the reunion with a soft smile. “Welcome, Callum,” he said warmly, extending a hand in greeting. “It’s a pleasure to have you here with us, as always.”
Callum shook Ethari’s hand gratefully. “Thank you, Ethari.”
With everyone gathered together, they settled into comfortable conversation, catching up on each other’s lives and sharing stories from their respective realms.
—
As they spent the day together, Callum grappled with a growing sense of anxiety about broaching the topic of marriage with Rayla’s parents. Despite his efforts to conceal his unease, the weight of the impending conversation lingered in the back of his mind.
After lunch, Callum discreetly offered to assist with clearing the table, seizing the opportunity to approach Lain in the kitchen. With a quick glance to ensure Rayla was preoccupied in conversation, he leaned in, his voice lowered to a whisper.
“Hey, Lain,” he began tentatively, “I know this might sound strange, but is there a way I could speak with you and Tiadrin privately about something important without raising Rayla’s suspicions?”
Lain paused for a moment, considering Callum’s request, before nodding understandingly. “Of course, Callum,” he replied in a low tone, matching the discreetness of Callum's approach. “We can find a moment to speak in private later today, perhaps after dinner when Rayla is occupied with something else.”
Callum’s shoulders visibly relaxed at Lain’s response, a sense of relief washing over him. “Thank you,” he said sincerely, grateful for Lain’s understanding. “That would be perfect.”
With a reassuring nod, Lain returned to his task, and Callum resumed helping with the cleanup.
Callum found himself stealing glances at Rayla’s parents, mentally rehearsing what he wanted to say to them. He couldn’t shake off the nervousness, but he was determined to go through with it.
After dinner, as they all sat around the table, Callum noticed Rayla engrossed in conversation with Ethari about some recent developments in the Silvergrove. Seizing the opportunity, he caught Lain’s eye and subtly nodded towards the door, indicating his readiness to talk privately.
Understanding his signal, Lain excused himself from the table under the pretense of needing some fresh air and motioned for Tiadrin to join him, and Callum followed suit a moment later. They stepped outside onto the moonlit veranda, where the air was cool and refreshing.
Lain turned to Callum, his expression serious yet welcoming. “What is it you wanted to discuss, Callum?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper to maintain privacy.
At first, Callum didn’t answer, averting his eyes, fidgeting under their gazes. Now that he was here what would he say? He’d planned this out, but now that Lain and Tiadrin were right here, in front of him, now what to do?
Tiadrin put a comforting hand on Callum’s arm, “You know you can tell us anything, right?”
Callum looked up at her and Lain’s loving, and concerned gazes. He closed his eyes, and took a deep, shaky breath. “I–” he paused, another deep breath, “I want your permission to ask Rayla to marry me,”
Lain and Tiadrin exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief as Callum nervously shifted on his feet. “So,” Lain began with a teasing grin, “are you finally going to make an honest elf out of our daughter?”
Tiadrin chuckled softly, playfully nudging her husband’s arm. “Yes, we’ve been wondering when you’d come around to it,” she added, her tone light but filled with affection.
Callum blinked in disbelief, caught off guard by their lighthearted approach to such a serious topic. “Wait, you’re okay with this?” he asked, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
Lain put a reassuring hand on Callum’s shoulder. “Of course, we are, Callum,” he said warmly. “We’ve seen the love you and Rayla share, and it’s undeniable.”
Tiadrin’s expression softened with maternal warmth. “You’ve brought so much joy into Rayla’s life, Callum,” she said gently. “We couldn’t be happier to have you as a part of our family.”
Despite their words of encouragement, Callum couldn’t shake off the lingering fear that gripped his heart. “I– I wasn’t sure you’d say yes,” he admitted quietly, his voice betraying his vulnerability.
Lain’s smile softened, his eyes reflecting understanding and empathy. “Callum, we trust you,” he said firmly. “And we believe in the strength of your love for Rayla.”
Tiadrin stepped closer to Callum, her hand reaching out to gently cup his cheek. “You have our blessing, Callum,” she said softly, her voice filled with sincerity. “We’d be honored to have you as our son-in-law.”
Tears pricked at the corners of Callum’s eyes as he absorbed their words, overwhelmed by a mix of emotions. “Thank you,” he whispered hoarsely, his voice choked with emotion. “Thank you both so much.”
With a shared understanding, they enveloped Callum in a warm embrace, offering him the love and support he needed in this moment of vulnerability. And as they stood there together under the moonlit sky, Callum felt a sense of reassurance wash over him, knowing that he had their unwavering support as he embarked on this new chapter of his life with Rayla.
That night, Callum and Rayla found themselves in a room with separate beds, a practical arrangement that left Callum feeling conflicted. He planted a gentle kiss on her forehead before retiring to his own bed, his thoughts swirling with a mix of relief and disappointment.
As he lay under the covers, watching Rayla’s peaceful form, a thin smile graced his lips. He couldn’t help but hope that this separation wouldn’t last much longer. Sharing a bed seemed like such a small thing, but it held the promise of bringing them closer together in more ways than one.
He certainly wasn’t pragmatic enough to marry her just for the sake of one bed, not at all, but it would make other aspects of their lives easier. Primarily, Callum worried about potential scandals that could erupt if any of the delegates or influential figures, including nobles who had previously sent him political proposals, discovered that he occasionally shared a bed with an elf.
As a prince, his romantic affairs were certainly no secret, but the revelation of their shared sleeping arrangements would undoubtedly provoke outrage among certain circles.
But it was about more than that. It was about ensuring her happiness and protecting her from further pain.
They had made a pact not to sleep together before marriage, but Callum was willing to toss aside that agreement to ease Rayla’s nightmares. She had already endured so much suffering, and he was determined to shield her from any more.
In his eyes, they were both too young to have experienced such loss and hardship, Ezran too. If they were to marry, Callum vowed to be her steadfast protector, ensuring that she never had to endure another moment of anguish. And as he drifted off to sleep, he held onto that promise, determined to make it a reality.
—
The next morning, Callum woke to the soft rustle of leaves outside the window. Rays of sunlight filtered through the branches, casting a warm glow over the room. He stretched, his mind already buzzing with thoughts of the day ahead.
Turning to glance at Rayla’s bed, he found it empty, the covers neatly folded. She must have already risen. With a sigh, Callum swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood, stretching once more to chase away the last remnants of sleep.
As he dressed and prepared for the day, Callum couldn’t shake the sense of anticipation that filled him. Today held the promise of an important conversation, and he couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness.
Callum made his way downstairs, eager to face whatever the day had in store. He found Rayla and her parents gathered in the kitchen, chatting over breakfast. Their laughter filled the room, and Callum couldn’t help but smile at the sight.
As breakfast came to an end, Ethari mentioned that he would be heading to his workshop to continue work on a new project. Callum’s ears perked up at the mention of the workshop, and he quickly formulated a plan in his mind.
“Mind if I tag along?” Callum asked, mustering up a casual tone. “I’ve been curious to see some of your latest creations.”
Ethari smiled warmly at Callum’s request. “Of course, you’re always welcome in my workshop,” he replied.
Callum grinned, leaning in to kiss Rayla on the cheek. “I won’t be long,” he promised, before following Ethari out of the kitchen and towards the workshop.
Once inside, Ethari began to point out various pieces he had been working on, explaining his designs. But Callum couldn’t focus on the items before him; his mind was consumed with his true purpose for being there.
Finally, unable to contain his nervous energy any longer, Callum took a deep breath and turned to Ethari. “Actually, there’s something else I wanted to discuss with you,” he began, his voice slightly shaky.
Ethari raised an eyebrow, sensing the change in Callum’s demeanor. “What is it?” he asked, curious.
Gathering his courage, Callum met Ethari’s gaze. “I... I want to ask you to forge a ring and horn cuffs for me,” he admitted, his words coming out in a rush.
Ethari’s expression softened as he realized the significance of Callum’s request. He placed a gentle hand on Callum’s shoulder, offering him a smile. “Callum, I would be honored to do that for you,” he replied warmly. “It would be my pleasure.”
Callum’s shoulders relaxed slightly at Ethari’s reassuring words, but he still couldn’t shake off the lingering doubts in his mind. “I appreciate that, Ethari,” he said, his voice tinged with uncertainty. “I… I wasn’t entirely sure you’d say yes.”
Ethari looked confused, “What do you mean? Of course I’d say yes to getting to forge an engagement gift for my daughter,” he reassured him. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a human or not, you love her, and that’s enough for me,” he continued, “And Callum, I want you to know that I consider you as much a son to me as Lain and Tiadrin do, and so does Runaan. Your happiness means everything to me.”
Callum’s eyes glistened with emotion at Ethari’s heartfelt words. He reached out and clasped Ethari’s hand gratefully. “Thank you, Ethari,” he said, his voice filled with sincerity. “Your support means the world to me.”
As Rayla walked into the workshop, her presence momentarily caught Callum and Ethari off guard. Callum’s smile brightened at the sight of her.
“Miss me?” he teased as she approached his side.
Rayla tilted her head playfully. “Maybe,” she replied with a smirk, but her expression softened as she noticed the emotion in Callum’s eyes. Stepping closer, she faced him properly. “You okay, love?” Concern laced her words as she reached out to wipe away a stray tear that had fallen.
Callum nodded, offering her a reassuring smile. “Yeah, I’m fine, Ray,” he assured her, placing a kiss on her forehead. “I promise.”
Rayla studied his expression. “You’re sure?” she pressed, her worry refusing to wane.
Callum nodded again, this time more emphatically. “Of course, Ray. Everything’s fine,” he insisted, his voice steady and reassuring. He reached out to cup her cheek, his touch tender. “I just had a moment, that’s all.”
Rayla’s worry persisted, her brows furrowing slightly. “I don’t know, Callum. You seemed really upset just now,” she admitted, her voice tinged with concern.
Taking a deep breath, Callum gently pulled her into a comforting embrace. “I promise, Ray, I’m okay,” he murmured, holding her close. “But if it’ll ease your mind, how about we go for a walk? Get some fresh air?”
Rayla hesitated for a moment, still visibly concerned, but she eventually nodded. “Yeah, that sounds nice,” she agreed softly, a faint smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
As Ethari watched Callum and Rayla walk away, a warm smile graced his features, his heart swelling with happiness at the sight of their closeness. He couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride in how far they had come together.
His thoughts drifted to the future, pondering how their bond would deepen once they were married. Ethari imagined the love and companionship they would continue to share, knowing that their union would only strengthen their connection even further.
With a contented sigh, Ethari returned to his work, feeling grateful to have witnessed such a beautiful moment between two souls destined to be together.
—
As they walked, Callum kept a gentle hold on Rayla’s hand, periodically stealing glances at her, silently admiring her. Despite his earlier moment of vulnerability, being with her now filled him with a sense of calm and reassurance.
Rayla seemed to relax gradually, the worry lines on her face smoothing out as they wandered through the serene surroundings. The gentle rustle of leaves and the distant sounds of nature provided a soothing backdrop to their quiet conversation.
Rayla eventually noticed that Callum appeared lost in thought. “What’s on your mind?” she asked, breaking the silence between them.
“Hmm?” Callum looked at her, momentarily puzzled.
Rayla smiled softly. “You seem preoccupied. Is something bothering you?” she gently probed.
Callum attempted to deflect, offering a faint smile. “Oh, just a few scattered thoughts, nothing important,” he replied, hoping to dismiss her observation.
But Rayla wasn’t easily deterred. Her smile faded slightly as she studied his expression, sensing something more beneath his attempt to brush off her concern. “Are you sure?” she pressed gently, her concern growing.
Callum hesitated for a moment, debating whether to confide in her. Finally, he met her gaze, his expression softening. “I’m fine, Ray. Really,” he assured her, gently squeezing her hand in reassurance.
Rayla regarded him for a moment, searching his eyes for any sign of hesitation or unease. Though she wanted to believe him, she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something he wasn’t telling her.
“I trust you,” she said softly, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze in return. “But if something’s bothering you, you know you can talk to me about it, right?”
Callum offered her a grateful smile, touched by her understanding. “I know, Ray,” he replied, his voice sincere. “And I appreciate that. But really, it’s nothing to worry about.”
Rayla nodded, though a hint of concern lingered in her eyes. “Alright,” she conceded, deciding not to press the matter further for now. “If you say so.”
—
They savored the remainder of the day, relishing both the moments spent alone together and the joyful company of Rayla’s family. As night descended and dinner came to an end, Callum found himself drawn to one of the balconies, seeking solace in the serene glow of the moonlight.
Standing alone in the tranquil night, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of urgency creeping over him. His thoughts inevitably turned to Rayla, and the swift progression of his plans weighed heavily on his mind.
There was no denying it—he wanted to marry her, more than anything in the world. The thought of spending the rest of his life with her filled him with an overwhelming sense of purpose and joy. Yet, amidst the certainty of his love for her, doubts lingered in the back of his mind.
Could he truly be the husband she deserved? Would he be able to meet her needs and support her through life’s trials and tribulations?
Lost in his contemplation, Callum was jolted back to the present by the soft touch of Rayla’s hand in his. Her gentle voice broke through the silence, pulling him from his reverie with a tender warmth that enveloped him.
“Hey, love,” she spoke softly.
When he turned to look at her, a breath caught in his throat. Bathed in the ethereal glow of the moonlight, Rayla seemed to radiate an otherworldly beauty. The light softened her features, casting a gentle halo around her delicate frame. Her eyes, a mesmerizing shade of violet, sparkled with an inner light, reflecting the celestial canopy above.
Her flowing white hair shimmered with a silvery sheen, cascading like a waterfall of moonbeams down her back. The delicate curves of her horns and her markings seemed to dance with a faint glow.
She was… Radiant? Beautiful? Definitely both.
Her laughter, like a melody on the wind, broke the spell. A blush tinged her cheeks as she cast her gaze downward, a coy smile playing at the corners of her lips.
“You know, you could try not to look so lovestruck,” she teased. Callum blinked, feeling a warmth spread across his cheeks as he struggled to compose himself.
“Oh, y-yeah, right—sorry,” he stammered, his words stumbling over one another in his attempt to regain his composure. Rayla’s gaze met his once more, her touch sending a shiver down his spine as her hand found its way to his chest.
“It’s fine,” she reassured him, “I like making you flustered.”
A smile tugged at the corners of Callum’s lips, “I’ve noticed,” he replied, his voice tinged with affection as he savored the warmth of her touch.
Her hand drifted up to his scarf, fingers tracing the soft fabric as she tilted her head slightly, admiring the way the moonlight danced upon his handsome face, accentuating his features and the brilliance of his emerald eyes. Without a word, she leaned in, a silent invitation, and he met her halfway.
As their kiss deepened, her fingers found their way into his hair, tangling in the strands as they savored the warmth of each other’s touch. His hand instinctively found her waist, pulling her closer as they lost themselves in the moment.
When they finally parted, she smiled at him, her eyes sparkling with affection. He did his best to return the smile, but beneath the surface, a shadow of uncertainty lingered in his gaze, impossible to conceal.
Rayla’s brow furrowed. “Love, are you okay?” she asked, her voice soft with worry. Callum attempted to inject a hint of reassurance into his smile, though it faltered slightly.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he replied, though his words rang hollow.
Rayla’s frown deepened, her concern growing more pronounced. “Callum,” she pressed gently, her voice tinged with urgency.
Callum felt the weight of her concern, and he knew he couldn’t brush it off entirely. He took a deep breath, attempting to compose himself before speaking.
“I promise, Ray, it’s nothing serious,” he began, his voice gentle yet earnest. “Just some thoughts running through my head, that’s all.”
Rayla studied him intently, her gaze searching his face for any sign of deception. Though she wanted to trust his words, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss.
“Are you sure?” she pressed softly, her concern evident in her voice.
Callum nodded, offering her a reassuring smile. “Of course,’’ he affirmed.
Sensing his internal struggle, Rayla gently squeezed his hand. “You know you can tell me anything, right?” she whispered, her voice filled with warmth and understanding.
Callum squeezed her hand affectionately, “I do,” he replied softly.
Rayla’s brow furrowed in concern, her gaze searching his face. “Then why aren’t you telling me now?” she asked, her voice gentle yet insistent. “You know I’m always here to listen, Callum.”
Caught off guard by her directness, Callum hesitated, searching for the right words. He knew he couldn’t reveal the true reason for his unease, not yet. But he also couldn’t bear to lie to her outright. “It’s... complicated,” he began, his voice faltering slightly.
Rayla’s expression softened with understanding, but her concern remained evident. “I understand,” she murmured, her fingers tracing soothing circles on the back of his hand. “But you don’t have to carry your burdens alone, Callum.”
“I promise, when the time is right, I’ll share everything with you.” He whispered.
Rayla offered him a small nod, her eyes shining with reassurance. “I’ll hold you to that,” she replied softly, leaning in to press a kiss to his cheek.
—
As Callum awoke the next morning, his senses gradually sharpened to the warmth enveloping him. With a soft sigh, he realized that an arm was draped over him, and a familiar presence pressed against his back. The realization struck him; this warmth beside him hadn’t been there when he had drifted off to sleep. Rayla had slipped into his bed sometime during the night.
He contemplated the reasons behind her being tucked in beside him—whether it was prompted by a restless dream or simply a desire to be near him. With a tender gesture, he reached down and gently grasped her hand, lifting it to his lips to place a kiss to her knuckles. Rayla stirred at his touch, her voice a sleepy murmur as she greeted him.
“Mmm, mornin’, love,” her words barely audible against the fabric of his shirt, yet they filled him with a sense of warmth and contentment.
He shifted to face her, wrapping his arm around her waist as he kissed her forehead. “Morning,” he replied, his smile widening at the sight of her tousled hair and sleepy gaze. “I don’t seem to remember you being here when I fell asleep.”
Rayla’s cheeks flushed faintly as she recalled the events of the previous night. “I, uh, must’ve snuck in while you were sleeping,” she admitted sheepishly. “Couldn’t resist being close to you.”
A fond chuckle escaped Callum’s lips as he pulled her closer, savoring the warmth of her presence. “Well, I’m glad you did,” he replied softly, pressing another kiss to her forehead. “I always sleep better with you beside me.”
Rayla’s smile widened at his words, a warm glow spreading through her chest. She nuzzled closer to him, her head resting against his chest as she listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
“Me too,” she confessed softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
They lay there in comfortable silence for a moment, basking in each other’s warmth. Rayla shifted slightly, propping herself up on one elbow to meet Callum’s gaze. “You seem lost in thought,” she observed, her eyes searching his face with concern. “Is everything alright?’’
Callum’s expression softened as he met her gaze, a mixture of gratitude and affection in his eyes. “Yeah, everything’s fine,” he assured her, reaching up to brush a stray strand of hair from her face. “Just grateful to wake up next to you, that’s all.”
Rayla smiled, her fingers tracing gentle circles on his chest. “I’m grateful too,” she admitted softly, leaning in to press a lingering kiss to his lips. “And I’m here for you, whatever you need.”
Callum’s heart swelled with warmth at her words, a wave of reassurance washing over him. “Thank you, Ray,” he murmured, pulling her close for another embrace.
Reluctantly, they untangled themselves from each other’s embrace and began the process of getting ready for the day ahead. Callum stretched his limbs, feeling the lingering warmth of Rayla’s presence seep into his bones, reluctant to let it go. But duty called, and they both knew they couldn’t linger in bed forever.
With a sigh, Callum swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood up, stretching his arms above his head. Rayla followed suit, her movements graceful and fluid as she rose from the bed.
As they dressed and packed their belongings, the air was tinged with a sense of impending departure. Callum couldn’t shake the feeling of reluctance gnawing at his insides, knowing that soon they would have to part ways with Rayla's family and return to their responsibilities.
As the morning sun cast its golden glow over The Silvergrove, Callum and Rayla joined Rayla’s family for breakfast. The table was laden with a variety of dishes, from freshly baked bread to succulent fruits picked from the orchards surrounding the village.
Lain and Tiadrin sat at the head of the table, their expressions a mixture of pride and bittersweetness as they looked at their daughter and her companion. Runaan and Ethari were seated nearby, their faces mirroring the sentiments of Rayla’s parents.
Conversation flowed easily as they shared stories and laughter, savoring the last moments of togetherness before the inevitable parting. Rayla leaned into Callum’s side, her fingers intertwined with his beneath the table.
As breakfast drew to a close, Lain and Tiadrin exchanged a meaningful glance before rising from their seats. They approached Callum and Rayla, each embracing them in turn, their embraces warm and full of affection.
“Take care of each other,” Lain said, his voice tinged with emotion.
Tiadrin nodded, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “We’ll miss you both.”
Runaan and Ethari joined them, offering their own farewells and words of encouragement. The air was heavy with the weight of impending departure, but also filled with the love and support of family.
With a final round of hugs and well-wishes, Callum and Rayla bid farewell to Rayla’s family and made their way to the courtyard. As they prepared to leave, the memories of their time in The Silvergrove lingered in their hearts, a reminder of the cherished moments they had shared with those they held dear.
With a final glance back at The Silvergrove, Callum took a deep breath, steeling himself for the journey ahead. Then, with a gentle beat of his wings, they lifted off the ground, soaring into the morning sky. As they flew, the wind rushing past them, Callum couldn’t help but feel a sense of longing for the peaceful sanctuary they were leaving behind. But he knew that, no matter where their journey took them, as long as they were together, they could face whatever challenges lay ahead.
—
Reluctantly, Callum opened his eyes, his gaze falling upon Rayla rolled over in front of him. He breathed a small sigh of relief; at least her arms weren’t wrapped around him, making it easier to slip away. His thoughts drifted to the letter he’d received from Ethari, informing him that the ring and cuffs were finished.
They’d arranged for Callum to fly out to The Silvergrove alone, and Ethari would meet him outside the village as Callum couldn’t use Rayla’s key without her. It meant an early departure, a fact that had momentarily slipped his mind the previous night when Rayla had asked him to stay with her after another bad dream. Putting her needs first, as he always did, had become second nature to him.
Callum managed to put on his jacket and pull up his boots while sitting on the edge of the bed before Rayla stirred, a new personal record.
As expected, Rayla rolled over, blinking away sleep from her eyes. “Callum?” she murmured.
He turned slightly to face her, offering a gentle smile as he reached out to cup her cheek, his fingers gently threading through her hair. Her brow furrowed in concern. “Are you going somewhere?” she asked.
“Yeah, but I’ll be back by this evening,” Callum replied, attempting to downplay the situation.
However, Rayla wasn’t easily dissuaded. “Where?” she pressed, her concern evident in her voice.
Callum hesitated for a moment before responding, “East Xadia, some High Mage stuff, just picking something up.” Sensing her unease, he hoped his vague answer would suffice.
Sitting up, Rayla rested her head on his shoulder. “You sure that’s all it is?” she asked softly, her fingers tracing patterns on his arm.
Taking her other hand in his, Callum reassured her, “Yeah, don’t worry, Ray.” She lifted her head, and he felt her hand move up his arm. “I’m guessing you’re flying there?” she asked, already knowing the answer.
He nodded, “That’s the quickest way.” Rayla’s concern lingered, prompting her to ask, “How far is it?”
Callum hesitated again before replying, “Not far, right by the Moonshadow Forest.” Feeling her gentle squeeze on his arm, he smiled reassuringly.
“I wish you’d stop pushing yourself like this,” Rayla murmured, her worry evident in her voice.
“Ray,” Callum chuckled softly, pressing a kiss to her cheek, “I’ll be fine, I’m quite the capable mage.” Rayla sighed, her concern lingering. “I know, I just– I worry, I worry about you,” she confessed softly, her fingers intertwining with his.
Rayla fretted a little more, her worry evident in her furrowed brow and hesitant gaze. “Callum, please,” she pleaded softly, “Can I at least see you off?”
Callum couldn’t deny her request, understanding her need for reassurance. “Of course, Ray,” he replied, gently squeezing her hand as they rose from the bed and made their way to one of the castle’s balconies.
Once there, Rayla gazed up at him with a mixture of concern and affection. “Please promise me you’ll be careful,” she implored, her voice tinged with worry.
Callum met her gaze, his expression earnest. “I promise, Ray,” he assured her, “I’ll be fine.”
Rayla nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. Leaning in, she pressed her lips to his, a silent plea for his safe return. Reluctantly, she released him from her embrace, watching with a heavy heart as he summoned his mage wings and took to the sky.
As Callum soared into the distance, Rayla remained on the balcony, her gaze fixed on his retreating form until he disappeared from sight. A sense of longing filled her heart as she whispered a silent prayer for his safety, her thoughts consumed by worry until he returned.
Rayla, on her way back to her room, came across Ezran, who seemed surprised to see her. “Rayla? What are you doing up so early?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Rayla countered with a smirk, “I could ask you the same thing.” Then she added, “Just seeing Callum off, he had to fly somewhere.”
Ezran’s confusion was evident as he tilted his head slightly. “Why so early?” he asked.
Rayla simply shrugged. “High Mage’s business,” she replied cryptically.
Ezran hesitated for a moment, his eyes darting around as if searching for an answer. Then, as if a light bulb had switched on in his head, he hurriedly explained, “Oh, right! I, uh, just wasn’t expecting him to leave that early. I’ve got something important to discuss with Opeli. Gotta go!” With that, he darted off, leaving Rayla to ponder his sudden departure.
Rayla found herself increasingly perplexed as the day wore on. Thoughts of the past few weeks swirled in her mind like leaves caught in a gust of wind.
First, there was Callum’s secretive conversation with Ezran, followed by their recent visit to her parents, where he’d seemed unusually distant and preoccupied. Then there was that moment she stumbled upon him in tears during his talk with Ethari. And now, his abrupt departure for East Xadia at the crack of dawn, with Ezran feigning ignorance but clearly covering for him.
Despite her inquiries, Callum had consistently brushed off her concerns, assuring her that everything was fine. But the pieces of the puzzle just didn’t fit together. Rayla couldn’t shake the gnawing feeling in her gut. Worry clawed at her heart with each passing hour, leaving her feeling unsettled and anxious.
—
As Callum landed at the castle, he hurried to his office, swiftly concealing the ring and cuffs. Exiting his office, he made his way towards his room, only to find Rayla waiting there, arms crossed and a troubled expression on her face.
“Hey, love,” Callum greeted, stepping forward to gently take her shoulders and plant a kiss on her lips. “Sorry, I wasn’t expecting to be back this late.” Despite his attempt to lighten the mood, Rayla’s expression remained unchanged, her arms still folded across her chest. “What is it?” he asked, sensing her unease.
“Something’s up with you lately, Callum,” she stated, her frown deepening. “And don’t tell me you’re fine, because I won’t believe you.”
Callum was taken aback by her directness. “Whoa, what do you mean?” he asked.
She sighed deeply, her frustration evident in her voice. “You really don’t think I’ve noticed? How odd you acted around my parents? How you were crying when I came to you and Ethari? How you left at the crack of dawn for some ‘Mage business’ that Ezran didn’t know about? Or how you brush off every question and repeat that you’re fine when I know for sure you’re not?”
Callum felt a lump form in his throat, unsure of how to respond to her accusations. “You know you can tell me anything, right?” she continued, her tone softer now, filled with concern.
He nodded, trying to convey reassurance. “Of course, Ray, always.”
“Then why aren’t you?” she pressed, her gaze searching his for answers.
Callum’s lips parted, but he found himself unable to form coherent words. “I–I just…” he faltered, his thoughts jumbled and his emotions tangled.
“Just what?” she probed, her eyes narrowing slightly. “You just don’t trust me anymore?”
“What? No! No, of course I still trust you, Ray, always,” he replied hastily, his eyes widening with genuine surprise at the suggestion.
Rayla sighed again, her expression softening. “Well, what am I supposed to think?” she asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty. “I know you’re hiding something from me, Callum.”
Callum felt the weight of her words pressing down on him, his mind racing as he struggled to find the right words to ease her concerns.
She continued, voice trembling with uncertainty, “Is it… something about us?” Fear now tainted her voice, “Is... Is there something wrong with... us?”
Callum’s heart sank, his own apprehension mirroring hers. He gently squeezed her shoulders, offering what reassurance he could. “No, of course not, Ray,” he said softly, his voice filled with sincerity, “nothing is wrong between us. I still love you, nothing and no one can change that.”
Rayla’s brows knit together in concern, her eyes searching his for answers. “Then what is it, Callum? Why won’t you just tell me?”
Callum’s heart ached at the distress in her voice. He struggled to find the right words, torn between the desire to be honest with her and the need to keep the surprise intact. “I... I’ve been trying to prepare something special for you,” he admitted, his tone gentle but cryptic. “But I want it to be a surprise, something unforgettable.”
Rayla’s expression softened slightly, though her worry still lingered. “Something special? What do you mean?”
Callum hesitated, weighing his words carefully. “It’s... something I’ve been working on for a while now,” he explained vaguely. “But I didn’t mean to make you worry so much. I just want everything to be perfect for you, Rayla.”
Rayla’s features softened at his words, understanding dawning in her eyes. She reached out to gently caress his cheek. “Callum, you don’t have to go to such lengths for me,” she said softly. “I just want you to be honest with me, that’s all.”
Callum nodded, a sense of relief washing over him as he met her gaze. “I know, and I promise I will be,” Callum murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Just... trust me a little while longer?”
Rayla agreed, though her expression still held traces of worry. Callum wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a comforting embrace. “I understand if you’re still worried,” he whispered softly. “But I promise, everything will be okay.”
She nestled into his embrace. “Can you stay with me tonight?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Callum hesitated for a moment, knowing she should be heading back to her own room, but seeing the anxiety in her eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to deny her. That’d be too cruel. “Of course,” he replied, pressing a kiss to her hair. “I’ll always be here for you, Rayla.”
With that, they settled into bed together, finding comfort in each other’s presence as they drifted off to sleep.
—
Callum had carefully planned the moment, waiting for the perfect opportunity to ask her. It happened to be the day after his birthday, a day that held special significance for both of them. It was their tradition to visit the Moon Nexus on that day. Rayla had left on his birthday, and she’d returned the day after two years later. Despite the initial hurt and anger, that day had become a symbol of reunion and love, marking the day she came back to him.
As they wandered through the ruins and temple of The Nexus hand in hand, Callum felt the weight of the ring and cuffs in his pocket, a constant reminder of his intention. They arrived in the evening and planned to spend the night, greeted by the familiar presence of Lujanne.
When the sun set and the moon and stars emerged, Callum led Rayla to the balcony overlooking the tranquil waters of The Nexus. There, with the moon casting its gentle glow upon them, they stood together in silence for a moment, Rayla resting her head on his shoulder, a sense of serenity enveloping them.
Eventually, Callum gathered his courage and took a deep breath. “Rayla?” he asked, his voice carrying a hint of nervousness.
She lifted her head, turning to face him fully. “Yeah?” she replied, her brow furrowing in confusion.
He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, struggling to find the right words. “So, I– I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately, and, there’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you…” He trailed off, his gaze locked with hers.
“What is it?” Rayla asked, her curiosity piqued.
Callum took another breath, his nerves starting to settle as he took her other hand, his touch gentle yet firm. “Rayla,” he began, his voice trembling slightly with emotion, “From the moment I met you, you changed my life in ways I never thought possible. You’ve given me a sense of completeness, a feeling of belonging that I never knew I was missing. Everything I could ever want or need, I find in you.” He paused, his gaze unwavering.
“You are so beautiful, so strong, and so caring,” Callum continued, his words filled with sincerity. “You’re the other half of my heart, my love, and I can’t imagine my life without you by my side." He held her gaze.
Rayla’s breath caught in her throat as Callum’s words washed over her, stirring a whirlwind of emotions within her. She longed to kiss him, to express the depth of her love in that moment, but she sensed he had more to say.
“There will always be a Callum and Rayla, always, no matter what,” he continued, his voice filled with sincerity. “Like the sky can’t exist without the moon, I can’t exist without you.”
Rayla’s breath caught in her throat as Callum took another deep breath, his words weighted with emotion. “So I’m asking you,” he said, his voice trembling slightly. With a meaningful pause, he reached into his pocket, producing the ring, and went down on one knee before her. “Will you marry me, Rayla?”
The weight of his question hung in the air, and for a moment, she was rendered speechless, her mind racing as she grappled with the enormity of his proposal.
But deep down, in the depths of her heart, she already knew her answer. In contrast, her hesitation made Callum’s chest tighten, worrying that she wasn’t ready after all. “I–”
“Yes,” she cut him off, her voice filled with certainty as she reached out and pulled him to his feet, “yes, a thousand times, yes, Callum.”
A radiant smile illuminated Callum’s face, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears of joy as he gazed at her. With steady hands, he gently slid the ring onto her finger, each movement deliberate, sealing their promise with a simple yet profound gesture.
“Ray, I–” he began, but before he could finish, she interrupted him by cupping his face in her hands and pressing her lips against his. The kiss was deep and passionate, their emotions pouring into each other as they melted into the moment. Callum's grin was evident even through the kiss, his heart racing with elation.
When they finally parted, both breathless and flushed with emotion, Callum whispered in awe, “Wow.”
Without a word, she leaned in again, and he eagerly wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer. Their lips met once more, the rhythm of their kiss reflecting the boundless love and joy that filled their hearts.
“We’re engaged,” Rayla whispered against his lips between kisses, her voice filled with wonder and excitement.
“We’re engaged,” he repeated, his words echoing her sentiment as they lost themselves in each other's embrace.
They savored the moment, their hearts overflowing with happiness and anticipation for the future. With each tender touch and whispered word, they reaffirmed their love and commitment to one another.
Callum felt a sense of peace wash over him. For so long, he had dreamed of this moment, of asking Rayla to be his forever. Now, with the ring on her finger and her lips pressed against his, everything felt right in the world.
Eventually, they reluctantly pulled away, their fingers intertwined as they gazed into each other’s eyes, sharing a silent understanding of the profound significance of this moment. Rayla’s eyes sparkled with unshed tears of joy, mirroring the love and happiness radiating from Callum’s gaze.
With a soft smile, Callum brushed a stray tear from Rayla’s cheek, his touch gentle and reassuring. “I love you,” he whispered, his voice filled with emotion.
“I love you too,” Rayla replied, her voice barely above a whisper, her heart overflowing with love and gratitude for the man standing before her.
As they returned to their room at The Nexus, the air was filled with a sense of tranquility and contentment. Neither Callum nor Rayla hesitated as they slipped into bed beside each other, the warmth of their bodies mingling as they settled into each other’s embrace.
Gazing into each other’s eyes, they shared a silent understanding—an unspoken agreement that their love was stronger than any doubts or fears that had once plagued them. In this moment, there was no need for words, for their hearts spoke volumes, their love a beacon of light in the darkness.
As they nestled together, their fingers intertwined and their breaths mingling in the quiet of the night, they knew that they were exactly where they were meant to be. In each other’s arms, they found solace and comfort, their love a sanctuary from the chaos of the world outside.
Wrapped in the warmth of their love, Callum and Rayla drifted off to sleep, their dreams filled with visions of a future filled with love, laughter, and endless adventures. And as they slept, their hearts beat as one, their souls intertwined for eternity.
—
As dawn broke over the horizon, casting its golden rays across the room, Callum stirred from his slumber, his eyes fluttering open to the sight of Rayla’s peaceful expression as she slept beside him. A soft smile tugged at his lips as he watched her, overwhelmed by the depth of love he felt for her in that moment.
Gently brushing a strand of hair from her face, Callum leaned in to press a tender kiss to her forehead, his heart overflowing with gratitude for having her by his side. He couldn’t imagine his life without her, couldn’t fathom a world where she wasn’t his constant companion, his unwavering support.
As Rayla stirred from her sleep, her eyes fluttering open to meet his gaze, Callum felt a surge of warmth fill his chest. “Good morning, love,” he murmured softly, his voice filled with affection.
“Good morning,” Rayla replied, her voice tinged with sleepiness as she snuggled closer to him, her hand finding his beneath the covers.
As the morning sun bathed the room in a warm glow, Callum and Rayla found themselves reluctant to leave the comfort of their bed. Despite their initial intention to rise early and begin their day, the allure of each other’s presence kept them lingering a while longer.
Rayla traced patterns on Callum’s chest with her fingertips, her touch sending shivers down his spine as he reveled in the sensation of her closeness.
With each passing moment, the outside world faded into insignificance, their worries and responsibilities melting away in the warmth of their love. In the sanctuary of their embrace, time seemed to stand still, allowing them to forget the cares of the world and simply be together.
Hours slipped by unnoticed, and they remained entwined in each other’s arms, basking in the simple joy of being together. For in that fleeting moment, nothing else mattered except the love they shared, a love that bound them together in a bond that transcended time and space.
Eventually, the call of the outside world grew too insistent to ignore, and with a reluctant sigh, they finally emerged from their cocoon of bliss. But as they rose from their bed and prepared to face the day ahead, they carried with them the memory of those stolen moments of intimacy, a treasure to be cherished in the days to come.
