Work Text:
As fun and magical as it was, planning their wedding had probably taken years off of their lives. Thankfully, Yeonjun’s large (and somewhat bossy) family had taken the reins on the invites and the venue, but a lot of the last minute details were left to Soobin and him to decide.
The guest book was actually an answering machine instead, so all of their loved ones could record lengthy, sappy voice messages instead of scrambling to write tiny in a little book. The food was tastefully selected, and the decor was quite stunning. Multicolored spring blossoms and warm lighting had everyone in a very happy mood. Which is what this was. Happiness.
After the ceremony, which included Soobin almost tripping before walking out and Yeonjun crying as soon as they looked at each other, everything had calmed down. Guests that they were less close to began to mingle with their old friends, Taehyun and Kai had passed them too many flutes of champagne to count, and their photographer, Beomgyu, was trying his best to be natural as he took pictures of people eating awkwardly. It was classic wedding shenanigans and exactly what they wanted.
The reception was more intimate, not only because of the slowly setting sun, but also due to the fact that their loved ones had planned this portion of the wedding themselves. There were terribly choreographed dances, emotional wedding songs, and tons and tons of congratulations sent their way. Both fathers of the grooms even faced each other in a dad dance off that left them both light-headed and heaving. It was mortifying but perfect.
To Yeonjun’s right was Soobin, a glowing, happy explosion of choked-up laughter and hands hitting the table. Their feet would tap each other in between emotional songs and sometimes Yeonjun would pull him into a kiss just for the heck of it. They’re married, they’re tipsy, and everyone in this room is celebrating them so why not give them a show?
A few loud whoops sound from the crowd after a particularly dizzying kiss, one that has Soobin’s eyes a little darker as they pull away.
“Hey, hyung… ” he still blushes at him even after all this time. Yeonjun is so damn lucky.
“Hey, husband.” It’s a great feeling to nudge him and look back to the crowd, knowing that Soobin’s eyes linger on him for much longer. The chatter of the room is loud, but Yeonjun can only focus on the little chuckles coming from the man next to him.
“Kai texted me and said that his speech is going to make you cry.”
“Me?” Yeonjun leans back to him. “What about you? ”
“I think he knows that I can hold my ground.”
“Bullshit.” Yeonjun leans in and lays a hand on his thigh. “Wanna bet?”
His husband (husband!) scoffs, “Really? On our wedding?”
“Hey guys,” a voice intervenes. It’s Beomgyu, a camera with a lens bigger than his face in hand. “Your mom wanted me to take a picture of you both before the waterworks ruined your makeup. Do you mind if I…”
The two of them settle into a comfortable position. Yeonjun tucked into Soobin’s side, their cheeks smushed together as they cheese the biggest smiles possible. It’s funny to think that months ago they had just met Beomgyu and were struggling to take engagement photos together, even considering eloping to avoid the mess of wedding stress. And yet here they are.
“Thanks.” Beomgyu flips through his shots before disappearing again.
“Weird guy.” Soobin says, face remaining close to his.
“Yeah, well that weird guy’s been flirting with our friend the whole evening.” Yeonjun snickers into his shoulder. Nice and warm, like the spring sun.
“I noticed that he was staring at Taehyun during the ceremony. Pretty sure he clicked more photos of him than he did of us.”
Yeonjun shakes his head. “Really? I was talking about Kai. He was teasing him during dinner and kept taking photos of him mid chew.”
“Huh.” Before they could question the intentions of their wedding photographer, someone in the front was clinking a fork against a glass.
“Hi everyone, we’d like to have your attention,” a woman’s voice resonates throughout the room and Soobin’s mom enters their line of sight. She’s beautiful today in her pink hanbok, and her hand is shaking a bit as she holds the microphone. Yeonjun’s side of the family is definitely the more rambunctious one, but something tells the couple that Soobin’s mom was encouraged to go first. Maybe it’s the look of appreciation she sends to her son-in-law’s mother.
“Hi, everybody. I’m Soobin’s mom,” she laughs when a couple of Soobin’s school friends scream for her like a fanchant.
“I haven’t prepared much, but I just want to say that seeing my son so happy next to the one he loves fills a very warm feeling in my heart. Thank you, Yeonjun-ah, for taking care of him…” She holds out a hand and Yeonjun squeezes it. “You’re part of our family now, and I am looking forward to having another son to stuff with my cooking." Everyone laughs but Yeonjun’s eyes are positively sparkling.
"Thank you, mom," Soobin mumbles into the mic so his husband can squeeze her tight.
After the parents take their turns, some of Soobin’s friends from grade school start messing around, dropping a beat and rapping terribly to some old song that Soobin had performed back in grade school. The cringe is extreme, especially when the mic is pointed at him and he’s forced to chime in, much to Yeonjun’s delight.
And then comes Kai. Taehyun stands behind him, maybe as moral support, but he seems the one already in tears.
Kai clears his throat, mischief imminent in his eyes. "There's this funny story. On their fourth date, Soobin had called us frantically looking for an outfit to wear. You see, he's kind of known in our group to be the worst dressed. No offense. The suit today is nice, though, I bet you didn't choose that yourself." Chuckles littered through the crowd. "Anyway, he called me first and rummaged through my closet before deeming everything too casual for a date with THE Choi Yeonjun. It was their fourth date, mind you. THE Choi Yeonjun should know his tragic fashion choices by now. But Soobin was unrelenting."
Taehyun steps in, surprisingly. "He came to my place, and stretched my favorite sweater. At this point, Yeonjun was supposed to be picking him up for their date. Soobin had tornadoed through my closet, not even bothering to put things back on hangers, and was still unable to come up with an outfit. He'd texted Yeonjun in a panic, and told him the situation with full honesty, even if he was embarrassed . Hey hyung, I don't know what to wear tonight and I want to look good for you. " Everyone bursts out laughing as Soobin cowers into his husband's shoulder. Yeonjun cards a hand through his hair and then kisses his head, mumbling something into his ear.
"But instead of laughing it off, or laughing at him, which Kai and I made sure to do, don't worry, Yeonjun had pulled up to my place. He took one look at Soobin, called him smoking hot in his sweatshirt and shorts, and then proceeded to drive him back to his own apartment so Soobin could choose something from hyung’s closet. They were twenty minutes late to their dinner reservations but Soobin wanted something and Yeonjun made sure he had it. It was the best Soobin had ever looked, and the most whipped Yeonjun looked.
"I think that's what is so beautiful between them. They care. About each other. About everyone. All the time. Soobin hugs me before I can even start crying. Yeonjun cooks for us, even if he’s terrible at it, just because he wants us to be together at a table. They have so much love to give and they are so selfless about it. I bet Yeonjun hyung is trying to scope out a tissue box for Soobin. Sit down, hyung, we've placed bets on who's crying."
Yeonjun laughs loudly and nudges Soobin. He sniffles in response, noticing the honesty in his friends' eyes as they look at them.
"We love you both. We love you together . I think all of us in this room can agree that these two are made to fit together. Puzzle pieces. Yeonjun was the missing piece in our group and the one in Soobin’s life. Someone who could care for him as much as he cared for us. And we're just–"
Taehyun halts, eyes watering. He steps aside as he chokes up, handing the mic to Kai, who laughs goodnaturedly at the sniffle fest.
"We're really happy. Mostly because we've been betting over you two since the beginning. But also because being around you both makes life so much better. Thank you for showing us the kind of love we all deserve. Congrats, hyungs.”
Yeonjun grabs Soobin’s hand as they look at each other. Tears. Tears everywhere. Kai and Taehyun barrel into their arms as the two stand up from their seats. It’s the four of them, a family, a single unit, in the tightest and most genuine hug they’ve ever shared. From the corner, a camera shutters. And it’s probably the best photo of the night.
An hour later, the music has slowed down and people begin to sway on the dance floor. A canopy of warm lights and colorful flowers hangs over them and everything feels like a dream. Yeonjun tugs him into his body tightly, almost squeezing him to death.
“Who cried first, do you think?” Soobin mumbles in their little bubble. Their foreheads press together and it feels like the first time they kissed all over again. He could cry with how happy he is, but he’d probably lose another bet.
Yeonjun hums and presses his lips to his cheek. “You. Definitely.”
“Nuh uh!”
“Okay, maybe it was Taehyun.”
“Definitely not Kai though.”
Yeonjun nods and they both look over to their friends who are too busy sticking various fruits into the chocolate fountain and making a mess on the table. From the side, Beomgyu snaps a picture of them and then disappears into the shadows.
Soobin’s arms tighten over his shoulders. They dance slowly, a little off-beat from the champagne. “How about we both lose?”
“Hm?” Yeonjun doesn't seem to be paying attention, his eyes have that starry look as he tucks a piece of hair behind his ear. He presses his hand into Soobin’s lower back and they fit together impossibly close.
“The bet, hyung. Let’s just say we both lost,” he whispers.
Their noses brush and it’s electric in his chest. Yeonjun’s looking at his lips. “I didn’t lose anything today, Soobin. I got to marry you.”
Soobin flushes and pulls him to his lips, smiling when Yeonjun kisses back immediately, like he’d be calculating how he’d retaliate. He’s bent back little by little, going with whatever Yeonjun does. He’s safe in his arms when Yeonjun dips him down dramatically, causing everyone in the room to cheer. Yeonjun swoops them upright, smooth and charming as always.
“Husband.” Yeonjun grabs his cheeks so tenderly. It’s then that it hits. When they wipe off all the makeup and change out of their suits, they’re going to sleep in their bed together like always. And he’s going to wake up next to him every day. They have forever now.
He gives him a wobbly smile. “Yeah, husband?”
“Are you happy? With everything?”
Yeonjun is probably talking about how the decorations turned out and whether the food was good. Truthfully, they spent much longer on the little details than they should’ve. As beautiful as everything was, it was exhausting to plan. The photobooth is popping off though, and more people are lined up to take pictures there than with the actual couple.
Soobin looks around, watching his parents twirl each other around. He giggles when he notices his school friends taking videos of each other terribly dancing. He sees Kai holding Beomgyu’s camera and running away as the photographer chases him around, Taehyun laughing at them both.
He looks back at the love of his life in his arms.
“I’m…” Soobin’s eyes water as Yeonjun gazes at him with that look of love that no one else in this world will match. He’s biting his lip, anticipating, as if he doesn’t know the most obvious answer ever. Yeonjun wipes his tears before they start falling. They pull each other close, arms on waists and lips against cheeks. “I’m the happiest.”
