This is a happy end

Summary:

"Just... just don't hurt him, okay?"

Waiting as Alex gets debriefed by The Department, Tom feels he should have a word with Kyra.

Set at the end of Season 3, Episode 8.

Notes:

Title shamelessly stolen from a line in Yael Naïm's New Soul.

Work Text:

"So, you and Alex then?"

Kyra stops scuffing her foot on the ground and looks up at him. "Me and Alex what?"

Tom works out how to phrase the question in a way that will deliver him the answer he wants. "Are you like, together now?"

She shrugs but he can see the ghost of a smile flit across her face.

"Why don't you ask him?"

"I will - but in case you hadn't noticed he's rather tied up at the moment."

They're waiting outside the old, run down looking warehouse that houses The Department while Alex... what? Gets debriefed? He'd received the call from Mrs Jones that morning and it was in unspoken agreement that Tom, Jack and Kyra had all simply followed him out, not keen on letting him head back into that building without him knowing that they were waiting outside.

"Well then."

She is so annoying, thinks Tom. So bloody difficult.

"I hope you are. I've always been rooting for the two of you."

She looks up, suprise etched on her face so he repeats himself. "I've always thought you guys would be good together."

Kyra doesn't say anything, goes back to scuffing her foot on the ground, though this time with a smile on her face and Tom can see her cheeks have reddened slightly.

"Thanks."

Probably the closest to a confirmation he's going to get.

And then - he struggles to find the right words, how to say what he wants to say in a way that won't insult her. Kyra can get so... prickly when she feels insulted.

"Just... just don't hurt him, okay?"

He can't quite bring himself to look at her. "He's... he's my best mate in the whole world and he's been through a lot."

He looks up at her. She's stopped kicking dirt and is staring at him so intently now that he wilts a little under the gaze.

"What makes you think it would be me doing the hurting?"

It's a fair point and he considers her question. To him, Kyra has always been so independent, so confident, so able to protect herself that the thought of his kind hearted, loveable best friend hurting her had never crossed his mind.

"He wouldn't do that. He really, really likes you, Kyra."

She continues to fix him with her intense stare. "Just like I will not hurt him."

And he believes her. He truly does. He gives her a grin, mutual understanding passing between them.

"Okay then."

He takes comfort in the shyness of the smile she gives him in return.
