Chapter 1: Good morning

Chapter Text

Jake woke up to his bed moving. Cracking open one eye he smiles when he sees Livy jumping on the bed.

"Good morning, daddy!" She says, falling to her knees beside him.

Jake groans and stretches to wake up more. In the middle of stretching Livy lays her head on his chest making him chuckle.

"Good morning, my love." Jake tiredly responds, hands falling to rest on the mop of curls on his daughter's head.

"Dad said to wake you up." Livy tells him, "he's made breakfast."

"Can you tell him I'll be down in a second?" Jake asks, "I have to get dressed." Jake gets out of bed and brushes his curls out of his eyes before putting his glasses on.

"He also said it's your day to do my hair." Livy smirks, crossing her arms.

Jake freezes in his tracks and Livy laughs. Jake slowly turns around and swiftly picks the little girl up.

Livy screams in surprise and holds onto Jake, giggling.

"Let's do that first, then." He tells her, going into her bedroom.

"Okay, what do you want me to do?" Jake asks, spraying her hair with multiple hair products.

"I want braids." She says, kicking her feet happily.

She doesn't specify what type of braids so Jake just does two French braids. Livy is happy with the finished product which makes Jake happy.

"Go get breakfast." Jake says, patting her back a few times.

Livy jumps off the chair and Jake watches the seven-year-old run out of the room and down the stairs. Jake chuckles when he hears Devon scolding her for not being careful coming downstairs.

Jake quickly gets dressed before joining his family in the kitchen. Devon is watching Livy in disgust as she shoves nearly an entire pancake into her mouth.

"Ew, Liv. Have some decent table manners." Jake sasses as he pours two cups of coffee.

Liv giggles and Devon is quick to tilt his head and raise an eyebrow to warn her. Livy forces herself to stop giggling so she doesn't choke; knowing that look on her dad's face.

"Did you get Noelle up?" Devon asks, looking up from his laptop.

"Shoot, no. Sorry." Jake places a mug in front of Devon and kisses his temple at the same time before leaving the kitchen and going back upstairs.

Jake opens a door quietly and grins when he sees the little girl standing up in her crib. She just recently learned how to do it and has been doing it every chance she gets.

"There she is!" Jake gasps as he walks over and lifts her out of the crib, "daddy might've accidentally forgotten to wake you up." He says as if she'll understand him.

Jake quickly changes her and puts her in a white shirt and pink leggings with pink and white socks.

He carries her downstairs where Devon is now typing a script for and doing more research on a new podcast episode.

"Hey, I have to go to the studio today for a podcast episode. Do you think you're free to stay with Noelle?" Devon asks, taking the baby from Jake.

"Obviously." Jake says nonchalantly and shrugs, getting his coffee from the counter.

"Love the enthusiasm, babe." Devon sarcastically responds, playfully rolling his eyes.

"Hey, you always ask me that as if I'll have something to do." Jake chuckles, sitting down in the empty chair beside Devon. "Liv, chew your food." He scolds without looking at the girl.

Livy, who was in fact not chewing her food, quickly listens to him. Jake and Devon had gotten used to the little girls newly discovered YOLO personality and didn't even have to glance in her direction to know she was doing something stupid and/or dangerous.

"Liv, what did I tell you?" Devon sighs, shaking his head.

Liv giggles as she reaches for her juice and drinks it.

"Hurry it up. We gotta get you to school, babe." Jake tells her, sipping his coffee.

Noelle begins kicking her feet and Devon puts his coffee down before he spills it and stands up to bring Noelle to her pack-n-play in the living room.

Livy is already dressed, so she runs into the main hallway of the house and sits on the floor to put her shoes on. She's been obsessed with these pink flats Lexy bought her last week.

Although her outfit is white leggings with a black-and-white striped dress, she still insists on wearing them and Jake honestly doesn't care. She's just going to school, not some major event.

"Daddy, I'll be late!" She yells, running into the kitchen to get her backpack off of her chair.

Jake groans, they have twenty minutes and the school's only ten minutes away. Still, he doesn't argue and grabs his car keys and Livy's backpack.

Devon enters the kitchen and is clearly confused. "You guys have like ten minutes." He says.

"Hey, let the kid be excited about school." Jake jokes, quickly kissing Devon before Livy begins pulling him towards the door.

"Daddy, if we're late you're gonna get grounded!" Livy yells.

"By who?" Jake asks, raising an eyebrow.

"Me, silly!" Livy giggles and a harsh tug nearly sends Jake to the floor so he switches to carrying her out the door instead.

Devon sighs once Jake leaves and goes back to the living room. Noelle is crawling around in her pack-n-play, so Devon sits inside with her and lays down.

Noelle lays beside him and he turns to look at the baby and sighs, "guess it's just you and me, kiddo."

The baby babbles and flails her arms around with a smile on her face. Devon can't help but smile back before turning his whole body to face her.

Devon kisses her forehead and she giggles. "Who let you be this adorable?" He asks the baby, unable to hide his smile.

Noelle giggles and babbles some more and Devon feels his early-morning exhaustion take over.

It's only eight in the morning, but he's been up since six and God is he tired. So, while Noelle babbles away Devon closes his eyes.

He fights to stay awake but he's so exhausted he ends up dozing off.

Devon's woken up by being shaken. He groans and opens his eyes to see Jake standing over him with Noelle on his hip.

"Did the baby toys bore you to sleep?" Jake jokes, and Devon slaps his arm gently.

"Shut the fuck up, Jake." Devon groans, rubbing his eyes.

"Relax, baby. I'm just messing with you." Jake smiles.

Devon gets up and kisses Jake softly, pulling away to look into his eyes.

"I know." Devon whispers, kissing Jake again before walking into the kitchen to finish his coffee.

"You have to leave in about thirty minutes!" Jake calls out to him, and Devon just gives him a thumbs up he knows Jake probably can't see.

Jake stands in the middle of the living room, talking to the babbling Noelle. The baby reaches up and pulls on his glasses, knocking them off his face.

"Oh, there goes my glasses." Jake says, "it's okay, I didn't want to see anyways." Jake says as they fall onto the floor.

Devon comes in with his car keys and laptop bag in his hands. He gives Jake and Noelle quick kisses before saying goodbye and leaving.

"Alright, what are we doing today?" Jake asks Noelle.

And as if on cue, Noelle begins screaming and crying and Jake lets out a disappointed sigh.

"Same as yesterday." He nonchalantly says, "way to switch it up, Elle."
