Work Text:
Lucy sat on the steps of the grand Guildhall, the sunset casting a golden glow over the city below. Her fingers traced the intricate designs etched into the stone, a stark contrast to the harshness of her childhood memories. She took a deep breath, steeling herself to share her story with her new friend, Louisa.
"You've never really talked about your past," Louisa said gently, sitting beside her. "What was it like growing up in the orphanage?
Lucy sighed, her gaze distant. "It wasn't a place of kindness, that's for sure. The headmistress, Mrs. Grimshaw, made sure of that. Every day, I had to wash dishes from dawn till dusk. My hands would ache so much, I could barely sleep at night. And the clothes... we wore the same ones all year round. They were made from patched-up leftovers. Sometimes, they didn't even fit properly."
Louisa's eyes widened in sympathy. "That sounds awful. How did you manage?"
Lucy smiled faintly. "I didn't have much choice. I just kept going. But it wasn't just the chores and the clothes. There was something else."
"What was it?"
"They called me a 'freak' because of my ability," Lucy said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I could do things with my mind, things that scared the other kids. Mrs. Grimshaw found out and made sure everyone knew I was different. It was lonely."
Aria reached out, placing a comforting hand on Lucy's. "What kind of abilities?"
"I could move things without touching them, make objects float," Lucy explained. "I didn't understand it back then. It just... happened. I remember once, I was so angry that all the plates in the kitchen lifted into the air and shattered against the walls. Mrs. Grimshaw punished me severely for that."
"That's incredible," Louisa said, awe in her voice. "But also terrifying for a child."
Lucy nodded. "It was. I felt like a monster. But one day, everything changed. A member of the Guild came to the orphanage. He was looking for children with special talents. When he saw what I could do, he offered me a place in the Guild."
Louisa's eyes sparkled with excitement. "That's when your life took a turn for the better, right?"
"Yes," Lucy agreed. "Joining the Guild was the best thing that ever happened to me. I finally found a place where I belonged, where my abilities were valued instead of feared. A place where I didn't have to be scared of my own ability. They taught me how to control and harness my powers. I found friends, mentors, and a purpose."
Louisa squeezed her hand. "I'm glad you found your way here, Lucy. You're not a freak. You're extraordinary."
A genuine smile spread across Lucy's face. "Thank you, Louisa. It means a lot to hear that. I've come a long way from that orphanage, and I'm determined to make the most of this second chance."
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the city in a soft twilight, Lucy felt a sense of peace. She had faced her past and found a future filled with hope and promise. And for the first time in a long while, she felt truly at home.
