The late afternoon sun cast a warm glow over Yokohama, filtering through the trees that lined the bustling streets. The air was thick with the aroma of street food and the laughter of passersby, a stark contrast to the tumultuous thoughts swirling in Edgar Allan Poe’s mind. He stood at the edge of a small park, a place where he and Ranpo often met to discuss cases, share insights, and indulge in their mutual love for literature. But today, something felt different. Today, the weight of unspoken feelings pressed heavily on his chest.
Poe watched Ranpo from a distance, his bright green eyes sparkling with mischief as he solved a complex puzzle on a small wooden table. The way Ranpo’s fingers danced over the pieces—so confident and assured—made Poe’s heart race. It was in moments like this, surrounded by the comforting laughter of his friend, that he felt the true depth of his affection for him. The thought of confessing stirred a tempest within him, a mix of excitement and dread.
With each passing second, the resolve that had built within him began to solidify. Today is the day, he thought, steeling himself for the leap he was about to take. He pushed through the crowd, his heart pounding louder than the noise around him, until he finally reached the table.
“Ranpo,” he started, his voice catching slightly as he swallowed hard. “I—”
“Oh! Poe! Look!” Ranpo interrupted, his eyes sparkling with amusement. He held up a completed puzzle, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “Isn’t this the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever seen? A cat wearing a monocle!”
Poe’s resolve faltered for a moment, the playful banter momentarily distracting him from his mission. He chuckled softly, the tension easing as he appreciated Ranpo’s infectious enthusiasm. “It is quite absurd,” he replied, shaking his head. “But that’s not what I wanted to talk about.”
Ranpo tilted his head, curiosity piqued. “Oh? What is it, then? Are you finally going to confess your undying love for me?” He teased, his grin widening, eyes glinting with mischief.
Poe felt his cheeks flush at the playful jab, but he pressed on, drawing in a deep breath. “Actually, yes, I—”
“Wait!” Ranpo interjected again, a finger raised in mock seriousness. “Let me guess— you’re going to tell me how you’ve been harbouring feelings for me since we first met, right? That all those moments we shared—solving cases, enjoying literature, and bonding over riddles—have deepened your affection for me?”
Poe’s heart raced. “How did you—”
“Because I’m a genius!” Ranpo proclaimed, bursting into laughter, his carefree demeanour infectious. “And besides, you’re not very subtle, my dear Poe.” He leaned back, folding his arms behind his head, a teasing glint in his eye. “But really, do go on. I’m enjoying this.”
The light-hearted atmosphere was both a comfort and a challenge for Poe. He felt his nerves settle slightly, but the weight of the moment was still palpable. “You’re insufferable,” he muttered, though a smile crept onto his face.
“Perhaps, but it keeps things interesting,” Ranpo replied, winking. “So, are we going to delve into the depths of your feelings, or should I prepare a riddle to distract you?”
Poe sighed, finding both exasperation and delight in Ranpo’s antics. “Riddles can wait. This is important to me.” He paused, the vulnerability washing over him like a wave. “I… I care about you, Ranpo. More than just as a friend. I want to know if you feel the same way.”
Ranpo’s laughter faded, and a thoughtful expression crossed his face. “Hmm,” he mused, tapping his chin. “That’s quite the confession, isn’t it? But you know, I think it’s about time I returned the favor.”
Poe’s heart raced again, hope flickering in his chest. “You… you do feel the same?”
“Well, let’s see,” Ranpo said, a playful smirk returning. “If I were to present you with a riddle to express my feelings, it might go something like this: I am not alive, yet I grow. I don’t have lungs, yet I need air. What am I?”
Poe blinked, his mind racing to solve the riddle as he realised the answer was metaphorical. “A fire,” he answered slowly, piecing it together. “A fire that requires nurturing and care, much like… feelings?”
“Precisely!” Ranpo exclaimed, clapping his hands together. “And just like a fire, my feelings for you are bright and warm, but they also need attention and understanding to grow.”
A smile broke across Poe’s face, a mix of relief and joy washing over him. “So, you really do feel the same?”
Ranpo’s demeanour shifted, his teasing nature softening into something more sincere. “Of course, I do, Poe. You make me feel… vulnerable. And while that’s a little scary, it’s also exhilarating.”
Poe’s heart swelled at Ranpo’s words. “I never imagined that I could bring that out in you.”
“And I never thought I could feel so comfortable being myself with someone,” Ranpo admitted, leaning closer. “You’ve always seen me for who I truly am, beneath the riddles and the puzzles. That means more to me than you know.”
The atmosphere between them shifted, the laughter and teasing replaced by a deeper connection. They both understood that they were standing on the precipice of something new and beautiful. Poe took a step closer, closing the distance between them, his heart racing with both excitement and trepidation.
“I want to explore this—whatever this is—together,” Poe said, sincerity pouring from him.
Ranpo’s smile softened, and he nodded, his eyes sparkling with warmth. “Me too, Poe. But let’s not forget to keep things interesting.” He paused, a playful glint returning to his eyes. “I’ve got a riddle in mind for our first date.”
Poe chuckled, the tension melting away once more. “You and your riddles,” he said fondly, shaking his head. “What’s the riddle?”
Ranpo leaned in, mischief dancing in his expression. “What is always in front of you but can’t be seen?”
Poe raised an eyebrow, momentarily stumped. “I have no idea.”
“Your future with me, of course!” Ranpo declared, laughter erupting once more.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over their surroundings, Poe realised that he wouldn’t trade this moment for anything. Their friendship had deepened into something beautiful and profound, and as they laughed and teased each other, he knew this was just the beginning. Together, they would face the unknown, one riddle at a time, each moment a cherished piece of their ever-growing connection.
